The death note looks at an entity name tag. In the base game, most have a shortened version like how "minecraft:ender_dragon" becomes "ender dragon". If you define the mod like so (doom:imp or twighlight_forest:naga) it should work. For players you would ave to use either their in game ID or full ID.
Drowning a sheep by encasing it in obsidian and glass filled with water kind of breaks the Death Note lore, because unless you have Lucky Blocks or Chance Cubes, even in Minecraft stuff like that can't just happen, and the Death Note lore says that if a death can't naturally happen the way you write it, or if it requires someone else's intervention that you haven't already written their name and had them doing something that could allow the new person's death to happen as a result, then they just have a heart attack.

The reason the Death Note made it to earth in the first place was because Ryuk was bored and wanted to see what humans would do with it, the owner of that note, idk what his name is, just wanted it back. He probably would have even killed light to get it back.
The datapack is just crazy and super cool, the only thing I would really like for it to do was for it to find a more natural looking way for the death, for example if they said (mob) fell from a high place, then the mob will beeline for the nearest drop/cliff and just go down that so it looked like it suicided, or if it said it was stung to death by bees then the nearest beehive will spawn the bees and they will super quickly go for the mob. The falling anvil one could just be that the falling anvil will fall from the sky.
A series of this with a group of friends. The owner gets to kill a person every 3 days or whenever the next recording session is held. The rest has to find out who it is. That'd be a dope series to watch as long as the series had a good amount of people so content wouldnt be killed within one video
and for the issue with the deathnote not working on players, just see if they can fix that, maybe add in some nametag mod so people have to find out other's names in order to get them killed too.
What about things like fish? Can fish drown in this data pack? Or can you smelt iron golems? Ooh what about a strider burning to death?? Ah, I have so many cool idea that I can’t test out myself!!

Hey what if you make a survival guess who's Kira series, where a kira doesn't know the other players names and he's got to figure it out and kill every body before they find out who he is and kill him, maybe give him custom potions that shows a person's name unless he is for example wearing a "mask" (custom head piece) Cause in the show they gotta know the person's face.
Hmmm the commanding is kinda lazy but ok why they did that cuz you cant detect like alll mobs thats in the book so you need to do it like alot of command blocks(or data packs) plus you can do better stuff
