I’m a 72 year old buzzard bedridden laying here with tears in my eyes. I was a working musician for 30+ years playing pop covers in clubs when young. We never did a Carpenter song because none of us could sing them. There was always something out of reach. She was a gift from God.

I was in weekend Rock/Pop bands for many years and would do solos from time to time - piano/vocal - and would do that Leon Russell song "A Song for You" a lot. Even though most of my Musical friends weren't fans - harder Rock was their cup of tea - but I was. I understood the Magic of her voice! She & Richard were definitely gifts from God! Music is our connection to the Divine. Take care.

I can’t wait to meet her in the next life. Richard, what a tragedy it must have been for you when she passed. You two will be together again some day and sing together again. ❤❤❤

I'm 71, soon to be 72, and I will love Karen Carpenter to the end of my days. If only she hadn't been robbed of her life so young, can we only imagine what more she would have brought to life with her magical voice. Richard must be very brave to have lost his working partner and beloved sister. Both had divine gifts, Richard has the gift of creative musical arranging and a fine pianist. Karen, a fantastic drummer and singer extradinaire, she sang with the birds in the trees and they were jealous! Rest in Peace, beautiful Lady.

When I was driving home some friends awhile ago a Carpenter's song was on my playlist, and suddenly all chatting stopped and everyone kept silence till the end of the song. It was a magical moment, a car speeding trough the night with five friends in it, all impressed by that soft eerie voice from the past. Except me nobody knew who the singer was (ah, the youth of today!) but all agreed that this kind of music is hardly heard anymore and that that's a sad evoltution.

What a troubadour you are. You have probably heard every accolade, but people really mean it when they say you changed their lives. Your amazing magical legacy is that ALL of it, your entire portfolio of work, has been FOR GOOD. Here we are in 2022, and look at what we've become as a nation - so troubling, so many people hurting, so much violence and confusion. But always in my heart pocket is you and Karen. Great big fluffy clouds of honesty, sweetness, beauty, purety, and soulful harmonies to float on. More than ever, your music is the message we need to hear. I've loved you and Karen since I was 10. Difficult to hold back the tears as I watched this documentary 😢 and in a personal level as well. In 1974 "We only just begun" was my 8th grade graduation song. Back story My music teacher chose the song but most of my classmates didn't want the song as our graduation song. During music class my classmates refused to cooperate with her, in learning the song. One day (just a few weeks from graduation) after having the hardest time to get us to cooperate she burst into tears and said "this song may not mean anything to you all but it's a song that you will treasure the rest of your life then ran out of the classroom. At that moment I and classmate Joe Harris (the tough guys) stood up and made the class realize how the were being toward our music teacher, from day one. After that and "lol" after treating to beat up anyone who refused to cooperate we surprised our teacher by singing the song in its entirely. We made her cry again but with tears of joy. She was right that happened in 1974 and here I am at 63 in 2021 with tears.

You’re so right! I’ve sung in a choir for many years and the choir mistress was always telling us that the audience should be able to hear every word. If they couldn’t, then it was not their fault, it was ours. We were taught to enunciate all words clearly, to make vowels long, because it wasn’t possible to expand the consonants in the same way and to make sure we were pronouncing the end of a word together, not just trailing off with a slither of s’s for example. So many pop stars now don’t even have to be able to sing and even if they can, it’s edited to make them sound perfect.

I don’t think it detracts from Karen Carpenter’s legacy nor from Richard to admit there are other - albeit a small subset- uniquely talented, skilled, and powerful musicians.
That subset is unique because there’s plenty of good vocalists, or players, or groups, but the Carpenters had actual musicianship and composition woven into their package. That might have been enough to reach the upper echelon but then there was Karen’s voice, and Richard’s skill with arrangement.
Success was inevitable even if they didn’t try hard. But they did try at it!

There are many genres of music, and even in the field of pop and rock she didn't have the best voice. Besides, music is subjective. I never really appreciated it at the time, but now 35 years later I realize how special that era was and the talent that oozed out of that era in pop music. Nostalgia for me during this era is a funny thing. It is wonderful and at the same time it hurts knowing that you only have the visions of how amazing and special that time was. Longing for the past. To quote one of my favorite movies "it reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again"....Field of Dreams. This music reminds us of a simpler time. And for us to young to remember, it serves as a beautiful vision of what once was been. How lucky were those alive then to experience it! Later, teaching speech, i would make my students listen to the way karen pronounced the words. When i heard of her death, it felt like losing a close friend or sister. the portion of your comment that speaks of feeling like you lost a sister when Karen died really shocked me because that is how I felt at the time. Then, when my sister died in 2004, looking so much like Karen Carpenter, they have been intertwined in my emotions since that time. I cry whenever I think about either of them. As crazy as it may seem, I recently discovered that both my sister and Karen were born on March 2nd (two years apart). Karen died in 1983 on my birthday. They are forever in my heart.

In the liner notes of a greatest hits compilation, Richard said more people wrote to him, regarding "We've Only Just Begun," than any other song, revealing that that song literally saved their lives. The message of present joys and future hope, came on, just as they were seriously considering ending their pain, by their own hands. Many were reduced to tears, and bravely, would struggle on. Imagine - a piece of music and lyrics could sway the minds of those who wanted to take the easy way out, and imbued them with the strength to carry on, opting for the much tougher road of continuing to live. Many thanks to God, Paul, Roger, Richard, Karen, and Herb, for creating a life-saving song!

@Michael Jackson The Guilty Dead Pedophile Well, don’t go thinking that Rome and Jerusalem’s answer/damage control to the true teachings of Jesus Christ have ANYTHING to do with them. His teachings were to free the masses. They’ve spent 2,000 years lying to their people about him and what he said, because they like their religiosity and control mechanisms. Your teachings have to be extremely important and empowering if you are going to scare of the most powerful government in the military in the world, having them resort to killing anybody who teaches the information to regular every day people. They were marching across the world taking over everything in sight, and yet somehow some simple teachings were such a danger that they had to torture, imprisoned, and murder people in the most vicious ways they could think of just to stop them from teaching some information?
There are no other teachings that terrify the world puppeteers. They don’t fear with the Bhagavad-Gita says, they do not fear Buddhism, they do not fear any guards from Egypt, they don’t fear anything except people taking those teachings seriously, and actually applying them. As long as somebody sits their butt in church, and doesn’t do anything more than that, then they are OK.
Any reasonably sane person would ask themselves why is such powerful world leaders would feel it necessary to march across Europe, for example, in false-flag misrepresentations, in the form of the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the witch trials… Just to torture and kill people and make them not want to know what the book actually says.
They sure have spent trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars, and centuries and centuries and centuries of lies… And all the idiots can come up with is that they think it’s “historical fiction“? They really have let Carnegie and Rockefeller indoctrinate them to the point where they don’t know how to critically think anymore. Just lineup for their daily dose of puke fest and bullshit from their TVs and eat it all up, and then go around in real life and online and try to puke it back all over everyone else. These idiots spend more time worrying about what they feed their bodies and what they feed their own mind. Do you let anyone and everyone have access to it, they don’t even know how their own minds are being accessed or even that they are accessed in the first place, even when their favorite teleprompter reader on TV thanks them for tuning in to be programmed. Scary.
Ya, The most powerful countries in the world aren’t afraid of super heroes of comic book credibility. They’re not going to rearrange the education system, the political systems, make up counterfeits by the handfuls… All for something that isn’t actually valuable. You don’t get endless versions of a fake Rolex without their actually being a valuable Rolex itself. In other words, Jesus isn’t “historical fiction“, and his teachings are of the actual value or they wouldn’t be so terrified of you actually realizing that, and applying it in your life and liberating yourself from the bullshit system in which you live. But if you’re happy being a slave to the system… It’s your prerogative.
Why is this basic seductive reasoning so very difficult for people who claim to be intelligent? Other cultures wrote about Jesus Christ, it’s not like he was some made up person, and you can clearly see that from the day of crucifixion there has been nothing but nonstop bullshit counterfeit religions and damage control to do anything to either stop people from teaching it all together, and barring that, doing anything and everything to make people think that they actually learned the teachings and didn’t like them, or that the teachings represent one of their fake, counterfeit versions like Catholicism, Islam, more Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and so on.
Can’t have a counterfeit without an original, and people don’t make counterfeits of something worthless.
And hey, genius, you never noticed that the only time Michael Jackson ever got accused of anything that was right after he exposed corruption from some major corporation that was affecting everybody? You must be some kind of Coincidence Theorist. Everything is just “coincidental”. Never mind that most of the time he wasn’t even in the country, and had given his house and the use of his chauffeur and staff to the supposed “victims“ when they claimed he assaulted them, or, when confronted with that evidence they retracted their faults statements, but the media didn’t make a big deal about that, of course because it was really only about character assassination.
Never mind that when other children exposed to Hollywood were asked about him, they always said he was the only one that was safe to be around, and they would be happy to list all the other people that were not safe to be around, but the police were not actually interested in those people, because it was always just a witchhunt to shut up Michael, who was trying to warn people.
You sound like a TV watcher. Probably addicted to your daily “programming”. Let your own little puppeteers tell you what to think. Congrats, lemming, or would that be parrot in the mental cage?
It’s not too late, Jesus did tell you how to get out of your mental cage and stop letting people control you, how to take you life back. But hey, if you’d like having people manipulate you, but all means, stay on the path you’re on and in your cage, debt slave.

I am so very grateful that I had the privilege of attending a live Carpenter’s concert in college. The music was magnificent, of course, but I will never forget their slideshow presentation with a beautiful tribute to their family and especially their parents. I was so impressed that in the middle of a pop concert they would do something showing such a beautiful depth of gratitude and character. I was also surprised to learn that virtually every one of the musicians in the band had their Master’s degrees. Everything about them was class.
I will always be sad about Karen’s loss The lesson everyone should learn from her loss is to be truly careful with our words and to choose to build people up or else say nothing at all. I hope the rude person who said the crushing untrue words to her that she was “fat”, has lived to regret it.
Thank you Karen and Richard for all you gave the world.
