      OMG TEOCHEW
I talk that dialect too and never thought i would find someone else talking about it, especially online. In your friends' case, that's kinda because Teochew is so fucking different from other dialects, like idk, it even differs between mutual Teochew speakers.
It's from mainland China first, but mine has some vietnamese, cantonese and cambodgian words in it because of my ancestors's history. So if i were to go back where the dialect came from, I wouldn't be able to understand 100% of their Teochew.
So trying to undertand another dialect or mandarin only based on Teochew is impossible. It doesn't even sound remotely close compared to Mandarin and Cantonese, and trust me i live in an asian district, grew up able to differentiate them but I don't understand a word in both.

If you speak the dialects, its possible to semi-understand mandarin.
The problem is when you only speak mandarin and then try to understand the dialects, its very difficult. Its cause dialects have more tones than mandarin.

@@ChilledRedPanda If i rmbred, it used to be 8 or 9? but its simplified to 6 now, you could still maybe meet people who speak up 8 or 9 tones but that's really rare.
They tend to be older gens or people who interact with older gens constantly. I doubt that much people uses 9 tones now cause of phones, its hard to catch different tones via call, especially with background sounds.
That's why you will think a lot of chinese people yell into their cellphones, its cause its easier to distinguish tones when its spoken loudly.

Dai B (低B) means 'stupid' and it's very specific to Hong Kong because there's no Chinese word for the 'B'. It probably comes from English word baby where Hong Kong ppl mutated it from 'baby' to 'BB' (basically say it like Beebee or 'B B').

Perhaps the reason chinese speakers "sound angry" sometimes might have something to do with chinese languages having _specific tonal patterns_ in certain syllables that, to native English speakers, sometimes sound like emotional inflection even though they aren't.
In English, a rising tone at the end of a sentence is usually an inflection of alarm or confusion, but in Chinese it could just be how that word is pronounced.

Its always so interesting which other Languages the Livers can speak and how good they are at it too. Like usually they do mention it in their debut, but I can't remember every thing every person says in their debut. Its nice to see tho, especially if its translated in a clip like this~
