Luckily I smelled the bullshit and didn't get invested in it. Same thing with Anthem. I had been gaming for 30+ years by that point and got pretty good at spotting scams just from being scammed before. I was trying to talk my friend down from it, but he wouldn't listen. He was more upset about the game being bad than he was about being scammed out of money.

I'm the same way -- and all my gamer friends *always* fall for it. But then, they buy it, play 15-30 hours of it and say 'i got my money's worth, its a great game just don't have high expectations out of it' type of people, who'll get 'f'd' constantly and make an excuse about how it was still worth the value... then do it again. lol

When you see a game trailer and it focuses all of its attention on how pretty it is, you can be damn sure that it's just a polished turd. When devs are proud of their work, they put attention on actual gameplay. That one was pretty easy to spot. No man's sky's scam was far better crafted. I had already been burned enough in the past that I don't get excited for anything anymore and just have the "yeah, we'll see" mindset.

I'll do the same thing I do with almost every game. I'll wait for content creators to finish/farm endgame and give their review. Then and only then will I start thinking about buying it. Even with MMOs, you get new/fresh servers post-launch. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to buy a game day one, let alone pre-order.
And even for near perfect games like BG3, I used steam sharing to do Act 1and I'm waiting for at least -20% deal on it. That's mostly because Steam prices in Switzerland are a big scam and even our government officially recommend to buy from 3rd party key resellers.

If people had more brains than money that's how they would all do it, or at least take some precautions, but we know most people have lukewarm IQ's nowadays. I'm personally a year 2 gamer. I wait until year two; most games are their GOTY/complete edition with all the *actual* content in the game, the bugs for the most part are taken care of, and the game can usually be bought for $30 or less on a sale. I have such a backlog of games already to play i have plenty to keep me busy and since I've been doing it for years now, there is always a constant flow of good games to pick up on the cheap during sales. (My only exception to this rule is occasionally indie games from publishers I know and have always liked their games (such as Zeboyd Digital), which I might buy in the first year, but only after watching trusted reviews as their games are never over $20 anyway.

Being a fan of space games is rough. I have tried so hard to enjoy NMS, but honestly I dislike almost everything about it. I'm not a fan of the art style, the flight or FPS combat, the flight model, the way character/ship progression works and so on. Elite Dangerous is okay for a bit, but really suffers from a lack of new content on a consistent basis and gameplay systems that have been left to rot without being expanded upon. ED also feels even less like a multiplayer game than NMS does - at least in the latter you regularly see a bunch of other players in the hub area. Star Citizen is still just a big "what if" with some cool ideas, but not enough has been implemented to know whether or not it'll end up being good or if their tech even allows them to make the game what they want it to be. It's too buggy and is essentially a glorified tech demo atm so it's dogshit too.
EVE has by far the best gameplay systems, at least when you consider that they're all fully hooked into the player economy - a feat that none of the other space games have even come close to achieving - so even when you're doing something mundane like resource gathering it feels good and important because you can do meaningful things with those items or sell them to people who actually need them. Unfortunately, the act of flying your ship and engaging in combat is probably the worst out of all the space games, so it's a bust. Don't even get me started on Starfield. I suspected all those years ago when they announced it that Bethesda wasn't capable of making a game up to industry standard and I hoped I'd be wrong as release approached, but it turns out that their antiquated way of designing games is something they've yet to evolve beyond. What a shame.
Ultimately, I'd still recommend someone looking for a space game to try out NMS and I have nothing against the game other than it simply not being for me. The space game genre is fucked.

Because WoW, despite its flaws, has millions of subs for a reason. What about Guild Wars 2? Or SWTOR, which has _awesome_ storytelling? Or Black Desert which has only gotten better and better and has always had the best combat in an MMO?
FF14 is good, easily better than the majority, but it's definitely not the best. Frankly, none of them can be considered the best. It all depends what you want from a game because i can tell you right now, no one is sticking with FF14 for a grand PvP experience or robust combat.

Couldn't agree more. I got the game at launch for like 50-60 bucks and was super disappointed. I played for like a week max and then never touched it again. Every 6-12 months or so since then I kept getting recommended news articles on the game with stuff they had implemented. I never read past the headlines, but I was surprised that they kept working on it despite its disastrous launch. I was expecting them to fold and give up the game, because it had lost like 95% of their player base in just the first few months. But they kept working on it over the years. I was still very bitter from the launch fiasco, so I didn't touch the game even after all those updates.
Fast forward to 2023. I heard from a friend who also got the game at launch that the game is actually really good now. I decided to redownload the game from my library, and boy was I stunned. The game was absolutely fantastic and I couldn't believe my eyes. The company, that I thought would give up on the game after like a year max, kept going, and turned the game into something amazing. For me, this is the biggest redemption story in all of gaming. Starting with arguably one of the worst launches in gaming history, then working their asses off for 8 freaking years despite all the backlash, and then turning the game into a near masterpiece is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. I've now been playing the game since last year and am enjoying it a lot. Alone or with friends, it's just a super fun game. All I can say is that this company gained my trust, and it's 100% deserved. I have never seen such dedication in the gaming industry, with someone going from zero to hero through sheer hard work over 8+ years. I definitely recommend the game right now, it's 100% worth its money.

I won’t reward such tactics and give them an excuse to do it again so they can make their billions. Example :D4 still has no end game. That skill twig, the so called tree isn’t a finished part of the game either but they passed it off as such and gaslighted the players into thinking it was. I'm glad some people managed to find some enjoyment in NMS after the updates but, I'm not giving them another cent unless their next game is insanely good and that's only after I've seen actual gameplay and confirm there are things to do in the game. There are so many good games out there that coping this hard is kind of wild. There are devs that care just as much if not more who are putting out games at a fraction of the cost, that have all the heart and soul on release, that took them 5 years to inject into NMS.
