Wow never seen anyone put those gears on with a hammer like that they are supposed to either be put on with a power press or by heating in HOT oil and putting them on but you should never ever hammer them on that way. I worked on 671 detroits all my life and im 79 years young retired and never put them on like that

I am glad that young people like me watched this videos 😉, please note that when an arbor press is not available you can install the camshaft timing gear with the J1903 gear installation tool via the service manual.

@@DieselProPower Hate to burst your bubble but those timimg gears should never be beat on in such a fashion as he is doing and in fact the detroit manual tells you NOT TO DO IT IN THIS MANNER because it can cause internal cracks in that metal that will fail in a disastrous way later on. If you dont have a way to put them on with a press THEN the manual tells you to heat them in boiling oil and the way we used to do it when I was working on them was first of all make sure you are in a situation where you cant set the building on fire then put them in boiling oil for at least an hour while you do other things tha need to be done such as installing pistons and sleeves or such then come back to the gears and have the camshafts secured in an upright psition and either using insulated welding gloves or 2 pairs of channel lock pliers and place that gear on the camshaft in the correct orientation and it will simply fall into place but NEVER EVER POUND THAT GEAR ONTO THAT CAMSHAFT IN THAT MANNER DOING SO CAN DAMAGE BOTH THE CAM GEAR AND THE SHAFT. you can crack the gear, the shaft OR BOTH.

A professional Diesel Mechanic would never ever install those gears on those camshafts as you did because doing that can crack the gear, the shaft or both and end up in a catastrophic failure
