1938 was the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Civil War defined us as a nation. To understand the American character the Civil War must be studied.
There are many good Civil War historians unfortunately not so many of them of the Southern origin are known to people. And Shelby foote was one of a kind. He made me love the subject matter and want to learn more about everything. One day watching the extended video I realized that you could get his telephone number and I called him. And spoke to him. It was a dream to speak to him
Amazing to be able to see video of men that fought in the American Civil War. I agree 100% with Shelby foote when he said " any understanding of the America today, one needs a full understanding of the American Civil War"
I've seen many gettysburg documentarys and still very interested in the Civil war. If only I could visit gettysburg, as I'm from England that mite not but hopefully one day my dream mite come true.
Paratroopers are light infantry who at best can hold a position for a period of time until reinforced. Without even mentioning how current enemy forces do NOT have naval or air supremacy to entertain such an attack, mass response such as the US Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines possess would know precisely how to deal with an airborne force of arms. Cut it off and let it whither on the vine, then crush it. The notion of paratroopers drinking from the Ohio is ridiculous and uninformed. @@Birdface-nw1ub
Can a nation so divided be testing that with this nation so conviceved can be longer endured, that we are met on this great battlefield to rember the battlefield that the hard endured?
Isn't there a problem with the last veteran dying in 1959????? I'm pretty good at math but something just doesn't work here!! Even if he lived to 100 he would have been between 2 to 5 years old when he served??!?!
It wasn't unheard of during the depression for old (but not old enough) people to lie about civil war service to get a pension. Some of the "last surviving veterans" were cases of that.
I don't think anyone could better define the Civil War than Shelby Foote did.
Absolutely the AUTHORITY on the subject!!!

I hope you can get there, you can actually feel the history,my dream is to visit England someday and have a beer in a old English pub.
i live about 2 hours from Gettysburg and trust me it is worth it.
Definitely worth it. Amazing and well preserved history with lots of areas to see.
My family vacations there every year, and we only go on vacation once a year.
All the armies of Europe and Asia couldn't by force take a drink from the Ohio river
- Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln did not foresee paratroopers

those veterans must've been young drummer boys or just barely teenagers when they fought.
best documentary ever!
Too bad they are making you pay for it now. No thanks, I already have the DVDs.

The
Drummer boy
He was born in 1854. He was likely not a civil war vet. The last verifiable member of the union army died in 1956.
