      I have had entire seasons go like that. Most of the time, it is a long dry spell of no birds or very few shot opportunities. Choosing not to take poor shots, only to rush good opportunities sure separate those that don't want to put in the work to enjoy waterfowl hunting.

    I could build a VW out of the steel I put out on misses and you said it best about your attitude and morale staying positive is everything. When you have them in the decoys and your dog is looking at you ‘where are my birds to get?’ It’s that time you have to reset and laugh about it or you will hate bird hunting real quick and that would be a tragic thing.

    Ya know sometimes best laid plans can go awry. We all have hunts like this no matter what your hunting but these types of hunts are the stories we tell more often than the full limit ones. It's good in a way to see that you have a normal for us guys with public land hunts the frustration of things that don't go just right. I liked this type of video as it's real and not a place where it's like shooting fish in a barrel. One thing you can learn from me (I'm sure you know as well) is I always take my selection of chokes in my duck bag as you know you never know how the ducks will work short or long. As the Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared".

I feel it more ethically sound than a wounded duck I can’t find in the thick cover. I don’t hunt that often. But teal do work in fast and close so opening up the choke might help. I really need to put in some time scouting, the water level is receding and I’ll have to look for a new spot. Water is scarce, most of the hunting is out at the lake. I’m going to go start looking in the morning. Am I looking for ducks? Habitat? Please forgive me if these are dumb questions, years ago I hunted with buddies in a rice field in the middle of a flyway. Now I’m on my own trying to get it going again. Thanks for posting all of this great content. I’ll search Onyx tonight and have a look around.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason

      If you’re scouting for a hunt that you would go on in the next few days, then you’re looking for ducks and water depth. If your scouting but not going to hunt for weeks then your looking more at habitat, lay of the land, water depth, and potential spots to hide.

    This is the second time on the internet that I have seen ground swatting swimming birds as a viable hunting method. Where I am from we have a rich waterfowling history and etiquette. That said, anything other than crippled birds shot on the water is considered unsportsmanlike but not illegal. When did this become acceptable. My 2 cents: You
    shouldn't target new hunters with videos that teach this practice

    • @recoilwaterfowlco.8766
      @recoilwaterfowlco.8766 3 года назад +3

      If you’ve worked hard enough on your hide, decoy spread, and calling technique to land birds in the spread and shoot them clean and humane then you’re better off from the guys shooting birds that pass by.

    • @331slash
      @331slash 3 года назад +1

      The sport is in tricking the bird, calling, decoying. Ive only seen this in waterfowling where some people say it is more ethical to kick up a bird and take a lower percentage shot than to take the high percentage shot on the water. Do you scare turkeys or deer to make them run before you shoot them. I feel that attitude is more suited for clay targets and upland hunting.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  3 года назад

      First of all, I am NOT targeting new hunters with videos that teach water swatting. Thats a ridiculous comment. I also come from a place of rich waterfowling history and etiquette. The facts are that our waterfowling history is full of "mowing them down on the water". That's how our forefathers did it. Sneak up and shoot em on the water. You can't use history to prove your point. Etiquette is more of letting birds work, not tree topping them, not setting up to close to another group, maybe taking turns shooting... that sort of thing. I occasionally see people getting mad about water swatting on social media. I'm not sure where that comes from. Don't get me wrong, I had much rather shoot em in the air, and almost never shoot one on the water, but "unsportsmanlike"? Sounds like something a pheasant hunter says.
      Now, from a video perspective, I don't think it's exciting to see water swatting, and I don't usually portray that on my content (I said as much in this video- if you were listening), but I put in there because it was funny! It proved the point of what I was talking about in the video. @331slash @recoil waterfowl co. both said it well in their comments.

    I think this is one of your best videos yet. Duck hunting's not always about filling the straps. And everytime you go hunting you don't get your limit even though on RUclips it seems like everyone does. The struggles make the times when things all come together so much better. Thanks for sharing

    Your closing remarks were spot on. Joel you are so right. The worst days really can be the best. Sitting in a blind with nothing to shoot at can be awesome too. Good time for appreciation of God and friends and family. These are the lessons I teach my grand kids.

    My best hunts were with my dad. My most memorable hunt was 2013 deer in CO.
    No deer, but saw my first mountain lion!

    Great Video My early teal was the same way. Felt like I was shooting a confetti cannon. That was all three hunts in Ohio.

    I love your channel and loved this video! I can’t hit the broadside of a barn on a good day, so your misses and frustration made me feel almost human. Thanks for sharing and bringing us along on the adventure!

    It’s great and all for out of state hunters bringing money to our little forgotten state, but man I really dislike seeing out of state tags when I’m going to a spot at 3am and it’s taken by a group from texas…. Especially at the McPherson wetlands. That’s like a hotspot for out of staters.
    2022 was the first season I picked up duck hunting, and from deer and Turkey hunting I know where a lot of good spots are around the reservoir I am at, but that 2022 season I kept getting crowded out from out of staters. Man was it frustrating. All I have is 18 decoys and a spinner. Also these damn out of staters were hunting on the refuge! I ended up calling them in. Man is it frustrating.
