    • @RingingResonance
      @RingingResonance 7 лет назад +8

      Yes, this! Except for one thing. The cap that holds the charge is actually the CRT itself. So if you remove the CRT without discharging it first you could be in for quite the surprise!

      Good point. Just like anything that carries dangers, one should be knowledgeable with it to be able to avoid the dangers. Electricity, explosives and chemicals all have their own specific hazards and one should not endeavor to play with them without an education.

      Yea this project is really cool, but if you don't know what you're doing and you don't discharge it you WILL die, but if you discharge it you're all good, you can lick the crt and you'll be fine, but MAKE SURE TO DISCHARGE IT PROPERLY, don't blame me if you injure yourself, you've been warned, honestly the best video on doing that safely is a video the 8 bit guy did on a macintosh, which has a crt in it

This is a project I've really wanted to do for a long time but the videos I found online didn't go into enough detail to make me feel I had a firm grasp of what I was doing. The effect of the difference between the 60 and 61 hertz is called a "beat". Basically once every second (the difference between 60 and 61) the waves become destructively interfered and cancel out. That's why you get that wobble!

    You can conect the audio ouput, from a power amplifier, to the vertical deflexion coil ; no conecting the vertical ouput to nothing ,eventualy, you can find an impedance to place at that place...o a normal 220v lamp.
    Of course you can not change the time base.
    Will be always 50c a second.

      ***** Are the speakers "listening" to the music from the computer and then directing it to the crt tv, or are they amplifying the music from the computer? Are they plugged into the computer, the crt, or both? That's the only part of the project I have trouble understanding. I REALLY WANT TO KNOW THIS!!
      Because if i put the cable directly into my laptop, it barely makes waves...

  • @kernel_data_inpage_error
    @kernel_data_inpage_error 4 года назад +2

    I used a wireless CCTV monochrome 5" monitor which operated a 14 Volts DC, the result was pretty wack, waves are barely visible and requires a very high input, like a 20 watt amplifier at least to get visble movement, posibly the impedance is too high, still was fun to make

  • @lizard5678

    Niice.. I actually pick perfectly working old CRT TV's out of the trash, I got like 4 of them so far. I didn't watch TV from like 2005 to 2014 Nov when I got an ematic DTV-analog converter at Walmart for 29.99+ a couple bucks for 2 year warranty, because all these digital to analog converters are made to be killed by on air signals, because the powers that be hate the analog loophole in the Digital Millenium, and I love the analog loophole, so I use these to actually watch VHS and on air TV, but it's nice to know they can be used as oscilloscopes too.

    I connected the vetical coil lead to the horisontal coil as you said, but that burned the tv. As others said. I crossed my fingers and took a chance, but that fucked it. The coil leads is probably producing different current to the different coils, hence different frequencies (60 Hz horizontal and something like 32 kHz vetical). I guess this works on some tellies and not on others.

  • @yahnsolo
    @yahnsolo 9 лет назад +5

    this TVscilloscope only showed low frequencies. because you plugged the vertical coil to SUBWOOFER output of your speakers set...
    Try to put a non filtered amplified output. You will then see real Sine, Sawtooth or even square lines!
    But nice idea btw

    • @punman5392
      @punman5392 8 лет назад +8

      No you won't. The coils are essentially inductors, meaning that any high frequencies will be suppressed. No matter what output you hook up to them they will always display filtered sine, square, triangle and sawtooth waves. This is the reason why oscilloscopes use electrostatic deflection over magnetic

    • @TheBackyardScientist
      @TheBackyardScientist  8 лет назад +2

      Matt is correct, And the reason I used the sub output was because the output would be less cluttered, and stronger.

    • @RingingResonance
      @RingingResonance 7 лет назад +1

      About 400 volts from a photo flash capacitor. Went across my arms and knocked me to the ground.
      All it takes to catch you off guard is 12 volts believe it or not! Now that probably won't make you piss your pants but it will give you a surprise when you are working on your car in the middle of the summer. Normally 12 volts isn't enough for you to feel anything, but you lean over while holding the frame of your car and your sweaty forearm grazes on the positive terminal of you car battery and you get a nice tingle on your arm that feels like someone poking you with a sharp needle.

    Ok, I've got the cat. Now what? Actually, I've also got the TV which is a AM/FM/PSB/TV combo about the size of a small bench O-scope(5" dia screen). Going to turn it into a component tester(curve tracer) and then I'll end up with a component tester-radio combo. Think I'll leave the radio intact as it is a very good one especially with AM listening to distant stations.

    This is fun but also VERY dangerous to the inexperienced. Trust me I know, I've pissed my pants a few times in the past from playing with old camera flash circuits.
    Besides, scopes are cheap nowa days. I got an old TDS540C off ebay for $400 a few days ago. That's a 2GS/s 500mhz digital scope with a lot of features. It was also my dad's favorite scope from back when worked out at Boeing. Plus, if you find a broken scope they can be a fun (challenge) in learning electronics if you want to fix them. If you intend on getting an old scope working again but don't have the experience then find someone who does and is willing to help you fix it. It can be a fun and rewarding exercise.

    i wonder if you can make the tv display higher frequencies. you can see when you played the saw tooth and square wave the higher harmonic that make up the wave weren't being displayed that's why they were much smoother than an actual saw or square wave. sick project though will definitely be trying this in the next couple weeks

    please note that some old tvs won't be able to do this. I have already destroyed a few tvs trying this. the reason being that the horiz. and vert. coils have different resistances and the vertical driver could not handle the resistance from the horizontal coil, this caused the tv to overload and fail. I have gotten this to work, but It was with a Philco tv from 2000. I do hate the manufacturer warnings.

    it make on working tv or video input based devices or monitor but not used A2D based circuit like Arduino or other digital circuit
    Useing analoge circuit this is awesome new idea to make every video based devices into oscilloscope.
    Can make tow different frequencies horizontal and vertical,and then distrube by injecting measuring signal work oscilloscope.

      Yes, in fact it might be better to build your own horizontal time base so that you can have a triggered sweep.

    What does he mean by connect the horizontal coil wires to the vertical coil leads? Is that where the horizontal coil wires connect to the circuit? And I just have a dot on my screen, I’m not sure how to see which coil is and isn’t vert.
