    1. Nobody has the necessary machines to make bottle caps any more, so they can't be counterfeited. "New" ones only appear when they're found in old ruins that are dangerous to explore. That makes them one of the most stable currencies you can find.
    2. Pay attention to Lucy's "okie-dokie" response. As the season goes on, the mood it presents...changes. I think it was a brilliant it of characterization, highlighting her progress on her personal journey.

      Though the fact they're in use in 2296 on the west coast speaks to the sorry state of the area since the most recent games, where they'd been surpassed by issued currencies.

  • @matthewbrown6030
    @matthewbrown6030 3 месяца назад +61

    The original game fallout had water as a store of value, to represent that hey needed a portable currency rather than hauling water around. Bottle caps are a finite item. So they were used and backed by water as a store of value. Filly is the name of a town, they are still in California.

  • @brandondodge6040
    @brandondodge6040 3 месяца назад +24

    So bottlecaps as a currency originally started in the Hub over100 years prior to the TV show and a few decades before Fallout 1. At first people traded with bottles of water which had the backing of the Hub Water Merchants. This was pretty cumbersome, and it was more convenient to use bottle caps instead. And since there was a somewhat limited number of caps in the world, it kept supply and demand and the economy going. Although there have been some counterfeit caps here and there, the Crimson Caravan usually cracks down on them.
    Since then some societies have tried to make paper money again, although they're only worth half as much as caps, you'd be paying 2 dollars for every cap essentially.

    Fun reaction guys, and as someone else mentioned please avoid light colored sweaters behind the video.
    The giant bag Max carries is IMO a nod to the enormous inventory you have in the game which you often give to your companion to carry.
    Why is anyone surprised when the ghoul stabs CX-404, he didn't survive 219 years by letting things kill him.
    The Ghoul is not a zombie he is mutant created by a massive dose of radiation usually (although it can happen in other ways).
    Ghouls are functionally immortal (like a tolkein elf).

    I can see how, without prior knowledge, you could come to an assumption that vaults were built after the war, but...
    I find it hard to believe that, 1: a company can remain functional to the point of building gigantic underground facilities. As in, maintaining supply routes for materials, keeping planners, engineers and a workforce of tens of thousands from dying in the initial years after the war or in the lawless wasteland afterwards and also then having enough 'rich people' to fill them. And 2, why they would sink decades of work into building bunkers clearly meant specifically to withstand nukes when the nukes have already been dropped and no more are to be expected.

    1:01:25 There’s 122 vaults not counting special vaults and structures Vaults-Tec might have built for their own uses. Probably one of the reasons Dr Wilzig (Michael Emerson) knows Lucy’s last name is because her dad is the overseer of one of the vaults near to the institution he was based at. There’s also the fact he was on the way to Moldaver herself so he might know something about what her scheme is.

    I personally love it when Caleb, Jacob or both go so far afield in their theories. I can understand why some roll their eyes but getting huffy and holier than thou in the comments is rude and uncalled for. If the brothers were being racist, misogynistic or classist, then I would expect harsh replies, but they (Caleb in this instance) are just being goofs who then got caught up in their own hubris.
    I can't wait for Caleb to see the truth of the vaults in later episodes! I hope, and I think, he will handle it with grace. How exciting the reveal will be to Caleb and Jacob if ppl in the comments don't spoil it, just to prove they know more than the bros. (and duh, commentors have seen the whole show, even if they had already realized when the vaults were built at this point in the show) Good on you, commentors, but don't force the bros. to take your path or belittle them while they watch this show for the first time.

    LOL Caleb's assumptions about the Ben Linus character's chip and how it works with his knowledge are WILD and so funny to me. Why not just assume he knew Lucy's last name because her father was actually someone important and therefore warranted tracking from the Enclave?
    As you can probably tell, I haven't finished the show so these are just my assumptions. I've only seen through episode 3.
    Also, I'm not 100% sure on the lore of the Vaults (it's been literally a decade+ since I've played Fallout 3) but I don't get why Caleb has this fixation on the Vaults being built post-War. It just seems infinitely more reasonable to assume that they would have been built as a safety measure for the nuclear war EVERYONE knew was inevitable.

    In terms of post apocalyptic education I’m sure literacy rates have plummeted as a low priority compared to other survival skills. I expect it’s somewhere between the “dark ages” where only monks or the aristocracy were educated and Wild West style little school houses on the prairie. We haven’t seen what it’s like in other countries/continents but in the former United States knowledge/education is preserved by various factions like the Brotherhood Of Steel (metaphorical monks) the remaining active Vaults and others. Most books have been destroyed but there is still a vast amount of electronic information that can be accessed by a Pip-Boy. Additionally amongst the ghoul population you would have plenty of people formally in educated professions or education itself. So while the average person in the wasteland might be lacking in formal education and academic knowledge outside of what they do to survive the are still plenty of people able to keep that knowledge alive and pass it on. I expect there is a lot of apprenticeships taking place amongst doctors and engineers and such.
