Custom CE Elevator Indicator Controller Project

- I've had a few CE Elevator indicators sitting around for a while and wanted to make them into something cool. I recently acquired the driver board needed to run these displays, and I came up with a custom microcontroller system to run this board. This video shows you what I did in order to get my displays to work with a remote control!

@@stlelevators tho, i barely see theese elevators with CE elevator indicators because im in singapore but in my community center, i think i saw a ce indicator as a mutubushi elevator i think

As an industrial controls guy, I'd be willing to bet that the displays use RS-422 for their serial interface, like many industrial displays and sports scoreboards. As such, if you could get your hands on the command set for these displays, I'll bet your Arduino, with an RS-485 or RS-422 interface, could enable you to display anything you want on those displays.
That’s the only thing keeping me from making my own controller. I might experiment around and try to make my own controller at some point.
Wow. I'd never even heard of CE, but we have *plenty* of their floor indicators around here, for sure

Holy crap, I've been wanting to do this for eons, but didn't realize the CE controllers were so simple!
I wanna do this myself, but take it a step further and reverse engineer the signal going to the display itself. Completely eliminating the need for the proprietary controller.
Trying to secure one without it costing an arm and a leg right now. Thanks for the insight!
Interfacing with a controller itself is not too hard. You can't change what is displayed without reprogramming the chip.
@@stlelevators I was going to take a look at that too. Since the EEPROM is socketed, I going to see if I can dump it and reprogram it

@@HesitantSignalhave you figured out the reverse engineering part yet? I have a few of these displays I'd like to control but the OEM driver boards are very expensive on eBay and I'd prefer to do it with an arduino
You literally inspired me to do this! I am going to build my own portable ce electronic elevator indicator next month! Im going to make a video of it once I'm finished!
You building your own display or interfacing with the existing system?
@@stlelevators I actually am going to have an elevator controller by ce electronics and it displays B, L, 2-12, and PH. No ardruino is going to be used for this because I'm going to use push buttons. Im gonna connect the buttons to their respective cable.
@@stlelevators I'm interfacing with the preprogrammed system already. I just have to hook up the display to the control board.
I have a 2 Digit CE indicator without a arrow. I pulled it off of my Dewhurst COP that I got very recently.

You should make it so that pressing a call button increments/decrements the floor number
That wouldn’t be too difficult to add, but I’ve already done another change to this panel which makes that feature not as useful.
Awesome! These CE indicator displays were what I saw on elevators when I was little whilst residing in tenants bldg's. You think you can code in an elevator bell, too?

What input voltage did you use on the elevator control board when you wanted to show a floor on the indicator?
I modified the resistors to allow for a lower voltage. I believe the original voltage was 24 and now I lowered it to 5 so it could be controlled by a microcontroller.
@@stlelevators Neat! I'm doing a very similar project like this, but my project makes it portable! It will possibly be done by next month because I have to make sure that I have all of the materials in order to be successful. I'll possibly post a video of it once it is finished!
What resistor value in ohms did you use to make the inputs work on the circuit board?
I think 47. I’d have to look again.

Uses a dot matrix display. There is also a way where if you got a hold of a preprogrammed factory chip, you can change it out on the current drivwr

Also, what remote, arduino, and IR receiver do you use?
You can use whatever you want for those parts. I use nano boards because of their size, but again, you can use whatever you want. Some arduino kits come with the board and a remote system. There’s lots of tutorials online showing how to program and set up IR.

I know electronics can be picky but couldn’t you use a small computer such as a Raspberry Pi and drive all four displays separately? I’m no electronics nerd but I do know computers and what they can do.
If I can figure out the communication system I could.
@@stlelevators Do the displays latch their displays to their last commanded display? If so, you might be able to use a few outputs of the Arduino to select which display is connected to the driver board using relays to connect whichever line is the transmit line to each individual display.
