    Very helpful video. Is there any room for a couple of extra pennies if you bring crisp USD $100s?
    February 3rd 2019 the official exchange rate was USD $1 = MXN $19.08.
    The highest I saw on the video was $18.15 (Terminal 1), which is 4.87% less... not bad.

    The best deal will be had at an ATM. I use a Charles Schwab debit card. You will get the official exchange rate for that day or very close which is much higher than the casa de cambios will give. They have no foreign transaction fees and reimburse the ATM fees. In other words, I can access my money at no cost. That said, I do like to keep some dollars on hand as a backup.

    • @mexicotravelexperiences
      @mexicotravelexperiences  5 лет назад

      Hey, thanks for the heads-up on this tip with Charles Schwab. People who travel quite often or live full or part time in Mexico may want to check out this option.
      Just curious ... if traveling in Mexico, where do you usually go? Or if you live their, in what region?

    • @md561
      @md561 5 лет назад

      @@mexicotravelexperiences I've been north to south and east to west in Mexico but find most often it seems Mexico city. The Schwab card I have found is the best. You have to open a brokerage account to be able to open a checking account for the debit card but you don't actually have to put any money in the brokerage account. Just open it and leave it empty then deposit money into your checking as needed to withdrawal from an ATM. This is best for Mexico however some places such as Honduras the street changers sometimes give a better rate than the ATM but that comes with some precautions.

    • @mexicotravelexperiences

      md561 Now you've got me interested. I am going to look into possibly opening a Charles Schwab account. Thanks for the advice!

      @@mexicotravelexperiences Just like casa de cambios, the banks will have different rates also. All will give a better rate than the Casas but Santander is pretty consistently among the better rates for their atm.

    Thank you for the tip to go to Terminal 1! This is a silly question, but when I go to exchange my USD to MX pesos, do I need to bring a wad of cash or do I use my ATM card?

    • @mexicotravelexperiences
      @mexicotravelexperiences  3 года назад +4

      Hi Christina,
      At the Exchange places in the airport you would exchange your currency (cash) for Mexican pesos.
      If you want to use your ATM card, then you can find an ATM machine at the airport to get pesos. There will most likely be a service fee to do that. Check with your bank to see what that might be.
      The other option is to exchange you currency for Mexican pesos at your home bank before you leave. You would have to order the pesos in advance at your bank. Check to see if your bank charges you a fee for this service. Some do. Some don't.
      Hope this helps.
      Enjoy Mexico!

    What is the difference between the airport and banks downtown?

    • @mexicotravelexperiences
      @mexicotravelexperiences  Год назад +1

      Hi Bill,
      Somehow I missed seeing your question.
      Unless you have an account at a Mexican bank, they may not exchange your money. Also, throughout the day, there are usually long lines of customers at the banks.
      There are exchange houses (Casas de Cambios). Just ask at where you will be staying for the closest one.
      Exchanging your money at the airport is easier, faster, and the rates are more or less not bad rates.
      If you are staying at a hotel, you may be able to exchange small of amounts of cash at hotel desk. However, it will probably be a worse exchange rate than at the airport.
