Ahhh I literally just started knitting like 2 days ago! I honestly dont know what stitch I'm doing but I'm sure I'll figure it out lol! also thanks for the amazing video!
Yep, if you do a knit over and over you get a pattern called garter stitch and its the most beginner friendly pattern for blankets, hats, scarves. As typically a stockinette (what we usually associate with knitting) has a weight imbalance causing it to curl up. And that one is done by knitting on the right side (you'll notice the right side at the cast on row has a nice braided type look as opposed to little bumps) you knit and on the wrong side you purl. Knitting is also like forming long crochet chains that are attached to one another. Almost like in tunisian crocheting. Also to make it easy a knit and purl are opposites. If you look at a knit stitch from the back it'll look like a purl and vice versa. So in switching stitches you're making it so all the knits sit on one side and the purls on the other. Alternating these stitches for the more advanced gives you ribbing and more fancy finishes like a seed stitch where you alternate a purl and a knit so you get vertical lines (if you look at the same stitch from each row) of knits alternating with purls. Even cable knitting for the bravest out there. Where you create braids. You might know from other comments I crochet but I knit too. I think I learnt to knit first then how to crochet. And my mom taught me how to. I've made so far plenty of hats from sheep and stitch (I don't remember the name. Is it blank slate? Skater?) it's a simple hat knit with very giant needles. A scarf I believe (I actually might've crocheted that one), a shawl (it was a free pattern I found on lovecrafts), a sweater (also a free pattern on lovecrafts) and some other things.
Sick with an airplane travel cold that jumped me on my way to Colorado. I’ve crocheted since I was young (66 and counting). I’ve wanted to knit, but got too frustrated with casting on. Can’t wait to try long tail casting on! I saw you knitting and decided to watch you. Hilarious you too were coughing your face off! Not that you were sick, but the timing of it was funny. You’re probably all recovered. Being In an air bnb on vacation and sick stinks. Hopefully going to a couple yarn stores anyway. Loved the catch up. Hope your dad had a lovely birthday! 🎉
Hi! I just found your channel through this video and you have such a great attitude about everything that I will subscribe as soon as I finish this comment!! Thank you for sharing your creativity!! One tip from someone who has taught both knitting and crochet is that it is a lot easier when you’re learning knitting to make sure that you are not making your stitches on the tip (or point) of the needle. Make sure to push the needle through the stitch before you start the next stitch so you don’t make the stitches too tight. The size of the needle determines the size of the loops you’re making and it’s important that those loops don’t get too small or it becomes hard to make the stitches on the next row. I found that my students would make the stitches on the needle tips when they were starting to knit faster, so I just wanted to suggest that you watch your knitting as you learn and practice making sure that you don’t get too tight.
I was asked "oh are you knitting" so much as a crocheter, that I eventually just decided to learn how to knit for funsies.....So far, I've made one washcloth (for my grandpa, it made it using the cost guard emblem bc he is a Cost guard veteran), slippers for my grandma, and two headbands (christmas presents). . Sheep and Sitch is my go-to youtuber as well!!!
New here! Wonderful knitting project! Thanks for the motivation to learn a new hobby! I have been looking at trying some hobbies as a form of self-care! For example, Diane in Denmark videos with the titles weekly planning self-care, she gives four self-care assignments/ideas that one can choose from for the week and in one of those videos she mentioned being creative. Also Mariane Cresp mentioned in her boost your mood video about creativity, Kennedy from the channel Cozy K, cozy hobbies to try videos and Morgan Long recent video the perfect cozy day preparing for Autumn she mentions having a self-care day based on the letters in your name. So I do not knit or crochet, but have been watching these types of videos as goals! Tilly is a cute cat!
This was so heartwarming. I’m someone who has knit for 3 years, never used a pattern in any regard and learnt to purl very late (because i knit continental purling was so hard!) And with crochet i’m also not using patterns, just going with the flow. I think what I felt was missing in knitting (flexibility?) i can now have in crochet. I’m gonna combine the two together as i still find the technical part of crochet difficult. Crochet bothers my pain more, but if i try knitting with cotton it’s the same pain so there are ways to avoid it! I try to vary between the two and sewing and that helps. Like continental is better for my hands at least
Hi Holly, I just found your channel today and I'm glad I did. I've been knitting for years and your comments about nerve damage really struck me. I have nerve damage from hand writing code for an exam, and it really affects my knitting to the point where I had to change styles. I very much recommend looking into "Very Pink Knits" and her video on portuguese knitting. You wrap the yarn around the back of your neck and use that to help with tension, and the individual stitches are made by flicking your thumbs. English knitting, I can't knit for longer than an hour if I'm lucky. Portuguese style, I can knit an entire day and not notice the time fly by :) Definitely recommend giving it a go :)
I'm 66. Intermediate level crocheter and just started taking knitting classes about 5 months ago. My first project was a lined crossover bag that I love! My 2nd project is a sweater. It's definitely more of a challenge and I'm only maybe 1/3 finished so far. I'm determined to complete it and I'm glad I've learned the basics of knitting. But I think I'll end up doing more crochet when I've finished the sweater. 😜
As a fellow life long crocheter who learned to knit 7 months ago: learn continental knitting asap. It’s a way of holding the yarn that’s waaaaay more like crochet with the yarn on the left hand at all times. Also the crochet cast on is my go-to. It’s stretchy, it’s smooth, I can do it lightning speed with more accuracy than any other traditional knit cast on. Apply what you know of crochet to knitting construction. Working in the round is way nicer in the beginning since it’s all knit stitches 😅.
I just made the connection between Holly Auna and Pollyanna - I pronounced it the same way as your name when I first read the book many many years ago. And to me, you embody her ‘the is always something to be glad about’ personality!
Woo woo!! You can dooo iiittt!! 🎉 Ahh, sometimes it feels like yesterday that i was determined to learn to knit… when it’s actually been like 5 years 😅 I specifically wanted to knit socks, so the first thing i ever completed was a (massive) DK weight sock 😂 Smash-cut to about a gajillion socks and a few divers other items later, i’m winding up yarn for my first cardigan.
I started out with knitting, mostly socks, and later learned how to crochet. I struggled way more than I thought I would and now I can do both knitting and crocheting 😂 I'm very fixated on vintage lace crocheting and filet crocheting atm, and am doing a table runner with a rose pattern while planning out my big curtains project
@@HollyAunaokay so I asked her and she said that there’s a really pretty “popcorn” stitch. It’s like the bobble stitch in crochet, but for knitting! She also says you’re very cheerful and happy 😁

I just started knitting and I love it so much but what u think you should learn next is the garder stitch it’s great for beginners and just remember we are in this together
I started out crocheting last year in may and then I picked up knitting in may of this year! I find knitting less stressful once you go past the initial start up row.
as a long time knitter, well done! one of these days i need to learn how to crochet but the thought of only having a hook rather than all the stitches safely on my needles intimidates me. also it is actually so strange to see someone knitting from the opposite direction i usually watch myself knit
I learned how to knit last year. I do find it less stressful on my hands. My best advice is to keep a small crochet needle nearby. It's great for grabbing those dropped stitches.

Why are we the same person! I also learned crochet as a little girl, only knew single crochet and made everything with that one stitch lol. Now I’m learning to knit, managed to cast on to a mechanical pencil and work one row yesterday so I’m buying needles this morning, after I finish this coffee 🙂 If RUclips had existed when we were kids we’d probably be soo good at these art forms by now. I also taught myself to paint from RUclips as an adult (like seriously paint).
I just started re-learning to knit after over 10 years this week! My goal is to make socks for my loved ones for Christmas. It's definitely a challenge, but so satisfying. I'm about to knit with circular needles for the first time eeeee Edit: I hope you're feeling better! ❤
Yes, people do call my crochet knitting -- so I bought myself a t-shirt which says "It's not knitting, it's crochet". I, like you, learned to crochet first, though I have been knitting for a few years now. I'm not sure which one is better for the hands; I think a lot of the strain on your hands/arms is due to how tight or relaxed you are when doing it, and some of that is going to be dependent on how nervous or relaxed you are with what you're doing. And you were being very relaxed. Yeah, knitting is very easy to frog... far too easy in some cases. The reason I chose to learn crochet first (alas, no grandmothers to teach me) was because I didn't want to worry about dropping stitches. I'm still much more confident with my crochet than my knitting.
I feel you lol. I've been crocheting for about 1-2 years and I decided I wanted to learn to knit a few months ago and I made a coaster! I also dropped a few stitches and you can see it too lol. It is hard but I like it.
I've been crocheting since I was 8, more or less. My grandma tried to teach me how to knit at 13 but I kept losing stitches XD... I'm 40 and I decided to try again last year, I've already knitted two sweaters and I'm knitting an afghan for my couch, and I'm still crocheting as well XD... I found my knitting style with the Portoguese style, and it helped with posture too!
Knitting takes alot of practice and pretty soon, you'll get better at it. I learned how to do a little knitting off RUclips right after I learned how to corchet off RUclips as well. Anyway, I believe in you girl and you got this! I hope you feel better soon! 😊💜 I love your glasses!
You and I have a lot in common. I am also a life long crocheter (over 50 years and taught by my grandmother). I hope you will succeed in your endeavor because I have tried so many times to learn to knit, but I fail every time. I don't know if you do Tunisian crochet, but it looks a lot like knitting.
Also keep doing knit stitch first until you definitely get comfortable; then learn purl stitch. Those are pretty much the only two stitches you need to learn and after that it’s just new techniques and alternating them both to create different patterns and designs.
I find that alternating between knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching helps to not aggravate my carpal tunnel and tendinitis. It also means I have a bare minimum of 3 projects on the go at any time.
I learned to crochet when I was 5. And when I was 18, I started teaching myself how to knit. I bought a kit with a book. This was before youtube was even a thing. Back when the numa numa guy and the badger song were big….it was a little intimidating, but I caught on. Though, I still have to look up how to cast on and off with every project 😅
If you do knit stitches every row you get garter stitch where you get purl bumps on both sides and if you alternate knit and purl rows you get stockinette stitch where you get one smooth side and one bumpy. Then you can do rib stitch which is alternating knit and purl every 1 or 2 stitches
There is a type of crochet that is a mix of knitting and crocheting. It is beautiful. You should try it. I have heard that you can even make your stuff look exactly like knitting!
Holly!! I have been in the same boat, lifetime crocheter new knitter (again). This last time I started, about 2 months ago, I finally got it and can do it. Maybe it helps that I got Clover Takumi interchangeable circular needles? I previously got the Tunisian kit so all I really got was one set of needles but still they helped me get moving on knitting. I believe one of my problems was a conceptual hurdle because I could make whatever I wanted with a singular, short crochet hook provided that the project isn't a big ol Tunisian work. With knitting, I couldn't grasp that I may need different lengths of circulars for different projects. Setting aside crochet for about a month straight and just trying and trying knitting really helped. I might be a little too ambitious for my current skill as I would like to make either a sweater or cardigan and possibly steek it, but who knows, sinxe I've already steeked little practice pieces and they came out well. From one crocheter to another, you got this. Also, knooking is a really fun alternative to use for knitting needles, though I don't do it very often.
Btw. 40 year crocheter. Started last winter knitting and love knitting in the round once I learned continental it felt comfortable. My cousin saw me knitting and said she thought it was hard. lol.
You hold your yarn while crocheting the same way I do. I just really learned how to knit this year too. Please check out Continental knitting (holding the working yarn in your LEFT hand and picking the yarn from the left hand/fingers instead of throwing it with the right hand) you may like it better. I did. I can hold the yarn the same way for knitting as I do for crochet.
I live in a spanish speaking country and we use the same verb for knit and crochet (tejer) we just say "tejer a crochet" (knit in crochet) or "tejer a dos agujas" (knit with two needles) or just "tejer"so we usually don't have the problem of mixing them up Also I just started learning to knit too and it's been so fun
My struggle in knitting is a twisted knitt stitch when i rib Try continental knitting its like you are crocheting so it will be fast Visit nimbleknitting, Elise rose crochet and studio knit they are a good knitter (I hope you will see this)
As a crocheter who then learned knitting as an adult basically, there are only two knitting stitches and then variations on these two and they're all called "different" stitches but they're really not. It's different than crochet in that their are more deviations in crochet. But in knitting the two main stitches are purl and knit. What you did at first was a garter stitch. It's doing the knit stitch on both sides. Stockinette is simply knitting on one side and purling on the other. This is when working flat. When working in the round (a tube), then that's a different story.
I feel like my story is similar, I technically learned to knit 2 years ago, but it wasn't until I tried again last summer that I felt like I actually knew what I was doing. My go to practice projects usually ends up being headbands/ear warmers, low commitment if I need to restart a bunch of times because something went horribly wrong.
I crochet and in my opinion crochet is easy ONCE u get the hang of it and I don't know how to knit but I feel like every time I try to learn how to knit my brain stops working 😅😅
Knitting is my 'wrists are hurting to much to crochet' craft lol. I do whats called pit knitting which is where you use long needles and hold one of the needles under your arm rather than your hand. Not only is is much much easier on the wrists it's also super fast
Fun little trick I do: Using a crochet hook to cast off with. It is a little be easier to slip stitch with a crochet hook than it is to do with a knitting needle.
This year I made it my goal also to learn knitting - I am a crocheter -, everyone in my household asks me ''what are you knitting?'' when I crochet. Everything is knitting for them 😅 at this point I don't correct them. At least when I'm actually knitting now they are right for once 😀
On the reverse, as a knitter, I was once gifted a crochet graphic t-shirt.....when I didn't know how to crochet 😅. (I know how to crochet now, but back then I only knew how to knit.)
I think you should try casting off with a crochet hook its so much easier! Especially because you crochet. I can't really explain it but basically you use a crochet/tunisian hook instead of a needle at the end and you pick up the two loops, then just slip through it off the hook.
Also if you’re making a pot grabber again I’d recommend sizing down with your needles instead to make the weave tighter so you don’t have to worry about accidentally sticking your finger through a hole when holding something hot
If you learned one is learning the knit stitch as soon as you’re comfortable enough then I’d recommend learning the purl stitch. It’s definitely not as comfortable as a knit stitch and it’s slower but it is nessasary. You also need to learn how to bind off, casting off is another word but the official word is binding off but either way is fine. You only need to switch hands and turn around if your not knitting in the round, if your knitting in the round make sure you have a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the row and then you join the round. You will not switch hands when you are knitting in the round you are only going in one direction. If you are flat knitting without joining in the round then in order for the bumps called purl stitches is to switch hands and turn over and then purl that round and then on the right side you would knit all the stitches. I have learned to knit the English style and prefer that way which is funny because I’ve learned to crotchet first before i learned to knit but i do prefer the English style which you have your yarn on your right hand and then continental is having your yarn in your left hand. I can knit both ways and heard continental is quicker but i still prefer the.english style.
Once I found the right grip style that felt most natural to me, knitting was a lot easier. And then I found the cranking machine and it got even better 😂
Hi Holly! As a knitter who learned how to crochet after, and helped a crocheter friend learn to knit better, I have a tip! You may want to try Continental (or picking) style knitting. This style uses the left hand to tension your yarn (same as crochet!) and the right-hand needle to pull the yarn through old loops to make new loops (same as crochet!). Knitting this way will work with the muscle memory you already have from crochet, and make the whole process less awkward. You are learning the English (or throwing) method. English style knitting uses the right hand to tension the yarn. There's nothing wrong with this style! It will just take longer to teach your hands what to do when you already have left-handed yarn control muscle memory from crochet.
Oh Boy wait til you learn to knit socks! (Looks over at the almost 10 pairs I've knit and WIPs) Uh oh * in my best Hagrid voice * "I shouldn't have told you that". 😅
I do both but started with knitting. I have noticed that I am more sore with crochet over knitting but I thought it was because I haven’t been crocheting for a year yet. Also I use bamboo knitting needles instead of plastic ones it slips less for me.
Continental is a style of knitting. You get the same stitch pattern but it’s a different hand movement. There’s loads of different ones but the Most popular ones are continental and English style knitting. If you struggle with arm pain continental might be a better fit cause it’s smaller movements. It’s the one I use when I’m in pain but my problem is in my fingers rather than my arms

You are so good at this . Loved your live stream . Hope you feel better ❤😂😊
Followed you because I also have a calico ❤😂 who is the light of my life. Happy crafting 😊
Tilly is a cute cat!
omgosh hi welcome to the sunflower family! i love these ideas i'll have to check it out!!!! :)
I just started weaving yesterday i wish you good luck on knitting 😊
This was so heartwarming. I’m someone who has knit for 3 years, never used a pattern in any regard and learnt to purl very late (because i knit continental purling was so hard!)
And with crochet i’m also not using patterns, just going with the flow.
One time, i told my friends that i could crochet and they send me a video of someone KNITTING and said “MAKE THIS”
🎉🎉🎉 happy birthday to ur dad I hope yall had a nice time and that you're feeling 100% better now/soon!!
awe thanks and thanks :)
I’m ten, and I’ve been crocheting for about half a year I’m just finishing my first project
Yes sheep and stitch is a fantastic channel. I learned the complex stuff via that channel. I wish you luck on this journey. 😊
I was literally watching so many tutorials feeling so lost then theirs just made total sense!
Oh my gosh I hope you try loom knitting, it's so super easy. That's how I started and now I'm trying crocheting.
Aww, I’ve missed the past lives from traveling but I’m hoping to make next week’s! I showed my knitting grandma your video and she really liked it ❤
Awe this makes me so happy! Ask your grandma what knitting stitches i should learn lolol
@@HollyAunaokay so I asked her and she said that there’s a really pretty “popcorn” stitch. It’s like the bobble stitch in crochet, but for knitting!
She also says you’re very cheerful and happy 😁
As a 12 year old who learned to knit when I was 11 from your channel and learned to knit, I feel like it’s funny to watch you learn something that I learned already, when you taught me the thing that started it all ❤
You have inspired me to try learn to knit iv not tryed yet but I thing I wil😊l
Im trying to knit, too. I love it. I can't stop 😂
I just started knitting and I love it so much but what u think you should learn next is the garder stitch it’s great for beginners and just remember we are in this together
I started out crocheting last year in may and then I picked up knitting in may of this year! I find knitting less stressful once you go past the initial start up row.
Continental knitting is actually a faster knitting. It is also a preferred way of knitting if you have learned to crochet first.
as a long time knitter, well done! one of these days i need to learn how to crochet but the thought of only having a hook rather than all the stitches safely on my needles intimidates me. also it is actually so strange to see someone knitting from the opposite direction i usually watch myself knit
I learned how to knit last year. I do find it less stressful on my hands. My best advice is to keep a small crochet needle nearby. It's great for grabbing those dropped stitches.
Yes I new you would do it and you can because your so talented see you at the livestream or if there’s no live today see you at the premiere!
Thanks for coming to the lives!
@@HollyAunalol this was be for the live and I missed it 😢 because the last 2 weeks I was in a different time zone so in that time zone it started at 6 instead of 5 lol I’m so sad I missed it hopefully I’ll see you at the Wednesday live I’ll just have to remember cause I’m usually busy but this week I’m not. P.S. I love you (not in a weird way) and your content and your one of my favorites RUclipsrs and inspiration! Senselessly Gianni!
i taught myself to crochet and 3 months later how to knit, that was over 10 yrs ago! you can do this.
Ever since I saw you crochet for a teaching.People have a crochet in under 60 I.Loved your video
awe thanks for watching :)
I just started re-learning to knit after over 10 years this week! My goal is to make socks for my loved ones for Christmas. It's definitely a challenge, but so satisfying. I'm about to knit with circular needles for the first time eeeee
Edit: I hope you're feeling better!
Hi holly im so exited for your next live 💗 feel better soon ❤ 🐈 🌻 🦒 🎉
thank you!!!
awe thanks so much!
I feel you lol. I've been crocheting for about 1-2 years and I decided I wanted to learn to knit a few months ago and I made a coaster! I also dropped a few stitches and you can see it too lol. It is hard but I like it.
Are you still knitting or was it one and done?
@@HollyAuna Well I only did it once but maybe I'll do something else lol
I've been crocheting since I was 8, more or less. My grandma tried to teach me how to knit at 13 but I kept losing stitches XD... I'm 40 and I decided to try again last year, I've already knitted two sweaters and I'm knitting an afghan for my couch, and I'm still crocheting as well XD... I found my knitting style with the Portoguese style, and it helped with posture too!
I love knitting!! After learning how to crochet I kinda got bored and wanted up my needle craft lol
What is your favorite stitch for knitting!?
And thank you and thank you!!!
Mine would be the garter stitch. You're welcome and happy knitting and crocheting! 😊💜
I’m learning how to knit and I have crochet for one year and knitting is so easy on me
Hi, holly.I'm a big fan of yours.
And I always watch your videos
thank you so much for watching!
That’s exactly my plan!!! I’m so excited to really dive into this :)
I find that alternating between knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching helps to not aggravate my carpal tunnel and tendinitis. It also means I have a bare minimum of 3 projects on the go at any time.
as I knitter and cricheter, both are amazing. I love crocheting better. I also *love* metal and wood needles
Not me finding you days before I start looking to knit lol
So excited we’re going on this knitting journey!
Is it Tunisian crochet?
This video inspired me to learn to knit as a crocheter. I've made one random strip so far and I think that's about as far as I can possibly go 😂
I believe in you!!! It gets easier! Did you start with crochet? Did you try continental knitting
@@HollyAuna yeah, I started with crochet! I was told to try continental knitting so I'll probably give that a go soon
Continental is like holding your working yarn in your left hand like you do for crochet.
Btw. 40 year crocheter. Started last winter knitting and love knitting in the round once I learned continental it felt comfortable. My cousin saw me knitting and said she thought it was hard. lol.
On thing to do is make a corner to corner wash cloth. So easy!
As a knitter, I HIGHLY recommend getting connected needles. They are just so much easier to use in my opinion :)
I just learned continental! Literally so excited
I live in a spanish speaking country and we use the same verb for knit and crochet (tejer) we just say "tejer a crochet" (knit in crochet) or "tejer a dos agujas" (knit with two needles) or just "tejer"so we usually don't have the problem of mixing them up
Also I just started learning to knit too and it's been so fun
Wow that is so cool thank you for sharing!!!!
My struggle in knitting is a twisted knitt stitch when i rib
Try continental knitting its like you are crocheting so it will be fast
Visit nimbleknitting, Elise rose crochet and studio knit they are a good knitter
(I hope you will see this)
I was at an RV park. Mom said to kids, “she’s knitting.” I was on my spinning wheel. 😂
Garter stitch! LOL the way I’ve been calling it the garden stitch 😂😂😂 thank you for sharing this makes everything make more sense!
Holly hope you feel better
I feel like my story is similar, I technically learned to knit 2 years ago, but it wasn't until I tried again last summer that I felt like I actually knew what I was doing. My go to practice projects usually ends up being headbands/ear warmers, low commitment if I need to restart a bunch of times because something went horribly wrong.
I have been knitting since I was little. I have tried to crochet and can't do it to save my life. Good luck
Wow good job! 😃👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much!
I'm a beginner I learned how to knit and purl and subtract and add so far. Witch is cool.
On the reverse, as a knitter, I was once gifted a crochet graphic t-shirt.....when I didn't know how to crochet 😅. (I know how to crochet now, but back then I only knew how to knit.)
Iconic. My friend got me a bag that says if I’m sitting, I’m knitting before I knew how to knit. 😂
Hope you feel better
I think you should try casting off with a crochet hook its so much easier! Especially because you crochet. I can't really explain it but basically you use a crochet/tunisian hook instead of a needle at the end and you pick up the two loops, then just slip through it off the hook.
That’s how I cast off on my knitting machine! I was wondering if I could do the same thing with knitting needles
Also if you’re making a pot grabber again I’d recommend sizing down with your needles instead to make the weave tighter so you don’t have to worry about accidentally sticking your finger through a hole when holding something hot
It’s crazy both my dad and daughter had whooping cough both adults mind you hope you’re feeling better now
If you learned one is learning the knit stitch as soon as you’re comfortable enough then I’d recommend learning the purl stitch.
Hi Holly! Big fan of yours ❤
awe thanks for being a part of the sunflower family!
I really do need to look into continental I keep hearing it’s more similar to crochet !
I found learning to crochet helped my knitting
I wanted to knit and got ok with it but could never understand how to fix a dropped stitch. With crochet you just pull back and give it another go:)
It’s so cool that your learning how to “crochet”😂😂😂
Oh Boy wait til you learn to knit socks! (Looks over at the almost 10 pairs I've knit and WIPs) Uh oh * in my best Hagrid voice * "I shouldn't have told you that". 😅
Staci, from VeryPink Knits here on RUclips taught me how to knit(and crochet) I would highly recommend her channel to learn new stitches and patterns.
I love Your video so much
❤❤❤❤❤
thanks for being a part of the sunflower family!
