We'll be comparing the cost of living in Japan vs the United States. Are you curious about how much it costs to live in Japan? Is Japan really as expensive as people say? We'll be breaking down the cost of everyday expenses such as housing, transportation, food, and healthcare to give you a better understanding of the cost of living in Japan. We'll also be looking at the differences in lifestyle and how that affects the cost of living.
While there, I discovered that Japan is significantly cheaper in many ways, for example, the transportation system is so efficient that you don't need to own a car, food is cheaper, housing is cheaper, healthcare is cheaper. By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of the cost of living in Japan and be able to make an informed decision about whether or not Japan is the right place for you to live or visit.
Note, that Japan is probably not a good place to move if you work in a corporate environment as they do not have much of a work/life balance.

We’ve been loving our life here and still finding more things to love. Everything you mentioned in your other video and this one too. Overall, the “freedom” to actually live a simple life is the No. 1 reason.
It’s safe and peaceful, convenient and walkable, infrastructure is pristine and updated, people are polite and respectful, stuff are so affordable it’s insane, quality of stuff are top notch, and welfare is just wow. These are just to name a FEW!

Tokyo is only a tiny bit more expensive. It's really cheap these days. You will make less money too, so factor that in.

I think the biggest thing that’s cheaper is rent and food depending on where you live. I’ve lived in Japan for close to 3 years in different parts (Okinawa, Shizuoka, Kanagawa, and Chiba) if you can find a place that isn’t a share house and the landlord will let you live there (most of the time a guarantor is needed) then it’ll be a lot cheaper. It’s also crazy how inexpensive the food is almost every where has a lunch set special for instance a ramen shop could have a very large quantity of ramen that comes with a drink and 6 pcs of gyoza for 900 yen.

Few years back in New York I went to a 8-Bit / Chiptunes party where I met a japanese Chiptunes / 8-Bit music teacher and it completely blew my mind on what professions people can actually have. Meanwhile in my country (Estonia), most people have not even heard of this "video game music genre". I am pretty sure you will discover some amazing people there to make music together.

A few other locations u can consider. Bangkok, Thailand. Taiwan. Singapore. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each of them unique and affordable to live in too.
In my experience, as a Canadian who only spent a month VN, my biggest take away was the cultural differences and what you end up missing.
I would say take the plunge. Cost of living is cheaper abroad in Asia. For the most part is much cheaper than in America.
You don't truly know what is for you until you have put in some real time in the lifestyle. A saying that I like is "time will tell".

Maybe I'm projecting, but your affection for Japan really comes through in the video. Walking around, seeing the city sights, finding little tucked in corners and places that, here in the US, most people would be scared to even go to for fear of being mugged. I've been living in Japan for 7 years and it's so much better than my life was in Canada, I was finally able to get out of living pay check to pay check. I can probably help fill in some of the blanks for you.
Regarding committing to work. In Japan 99% of employers will pay for your monthly transit pass.

I also like that cars in Japan have less miles on them. You can enjoy driving since you don't have to commute by car every single day you get to go somewhere it's a destination rather than your nine-to-five. Also the roads are more fun to drive on..

I live in a cheaper US city, and when I travelled to Japan, it definitely was more expensive at least in Tokyo, for things like food or public transport. But usually the quality was better in Tokyo, so it was a case of you get what you pay for. Now with inflation, prices are more similar.
Here were some prices I encountered vs what they were in my city before I went.
2hrs Karaoke, bill split among 7 people
My City $13 Tokyo $18
Round trip Ticket from 10mi in suburbs to city center
My City $2.75 Tokyo $4 it can be hard to gauge Tokyo as you have multiple choices while my city has 1 choice
Meal at non fast food Restaurant cheap
My City $15 Tokyo $15-20 usd
There were other things like renting a car, which we did, where gas was $3 gal in the US and about $4.50 gal in Japan

Also as someone who loves what they see when it comes to Japan from the culture, to the overall cost and just going as far as teaching myself Japanese for about 2 and a half years now.
Realistically, I don't think I'll ever be in the position to move but it is so much better than America. From the quality of life to food it is a no brainer how much better Japan is.

Just want to mention re commute in Japan, companies pay your commute. For me, I get paid my wage + what it costs to commute to the office and it's the same for my friends. I don't know if this is universal, but thus far it seems like it is.
I'm also not sure about those rent prices, but I pay approx $540 for a 2bd equivalent right outside of Tokyo but 10 min from work with train, 25 min walk(!) I'd say comparable size to what I'm used to in NYC and nearby and the biggest place I've lived in in the last 14 years.

complete your own research and make a decision based on your own findings. You'll be happier with the outcome if it's based on your own research and insights. Personally, I'd choose to live in Japan if givven the choice , not because of any anime stereotypes, but due to the exceptional quality of life, clean and efficient living conditions, rich cultural, and delicious food.
One thing I think is important to mention when it comes to transportation if you don't have a car, then you also don't have maintenance costs for the car. Once you factor in things like oil changes and other routine maintenance, new tires and services, it goes up even more. Not to mention once your car hits a certain age or certain mileage even more expensive maintenance required for it.
Also, most Japanese companies will cover the cost of transportation to and from work.

Japanese prices are cheap because Japanese wages also haven't increased in like 30 years. Look at how much U.S. salaries have increased during that same period.
There may indeed be apartments in your desired price range and location in Japan. Whether or not the landlord will rent to a foreigner, no matter how much money you have, is another matter altogether.

Man I guess this is why even though Americans earn 10x more than the ppl in my country (Portugal) the living standards end up being not so different because everything over there is so expensive. I pay 120€ a YEAR for my car insurance. Plus 35€ a year in "circulation tax" (not sure what it's actually called in English, I'm just translating it literally).
Cheap meals here are about 6-8€.
200mb internet+cellphone+120channels on the TV box is about 45€a month.
Public transport here in the capital is 40€ a month. That's every transportation except taxis,including boat.
Rent is sky-high right now mostly because of people from richer countries coming over, inflating the numbers. Most Portuguese can't afford rent at this point, only foreigners and "digital nomads" can.
minimumwage here is about 3.35€/h. Not actual numbers, again, just telling it from memory.

I lived there between 2005-2007. At the time, I found it cheaper to live there than in Australia. I've visited since, and still found it pretty cheap compared to things here.
Interesting comparison, but I completely disagree with your comments about plastic packaging and shrink wrap. First, the majority of that plastic gets burned, not recycled. Anything contaminated with food or fluids has no chance of being recycled. Second, the mass production of plastic (in Japan's case), is certainly no better than long-haul trucking. Finally, plastic wrapped produce spoils much quicker than if were not wrapped.
Japan has this weird obsession where everything has to be perfect and clean looking. It doesn't matter if it's food or video games like you have shown. If your product looks slightly worn or inferior next to your competitor, why would anyone come to your shop?

As far as buying a place goes. If you can buy a three-story building for a million dollars, compared to Southern California where I live, that's about how much a single-family home goes for. The market value of the house I am renting is about 1.4 million. Or at least it was last time I checked. The cost seem to be going down and you can find a single-family home now for around $800,000. I'd rather have a three-story building! LOL
The thing is, a three-story home in Japan is probably much smaller than a single-family home in southern California.

One word of caution, from what I know one thing is to live in Japan as a youtuber or a freelancer, another is to live there as a salary man. Corporate culture in Japan is stuck in the 90's, it's a piramidal hierarchy were you are treated like shit, you are literally bullied and it's very hard to rise, when you change companies you have to start over from the bottom of the food chain, they expect that you work all your life at the same company. I'm sure its not your case, so for you it's going to be a nerd dream living there.
I mentioned that it's a bad idea to move there for office work, but I really should go into it more because creative types will have a very different experience

True about the Oldtimer but still it’s wired that here in Europe insurance is a lot more cheaper than in the States. But granted fuel does cost more (but our cars a more efficient) and we do have to pay extra taxes witch does raise the cost.
Really loving these videos. However, I do feel that your viewpoint on the money stuff is heavily weighted on making US dollars. I'm afraid, if you're going to talk about costs, you're going to have to deal with the inflation issue, since Japan has not been imune to that, and it's not like we know when it's ending yet. Some FUD spreaders are saying "oh no, the imperialsm, the facism, the nazis!" as usual while ignoring China and N.Korea, but inflation is a real tangible issue of cost of living in Japan.
Seems inflation is far far less of a thing than it is in most of the world.
@@teksyndicate In terms of things you absolutely have to consider - there is a high probability of a catastrophic earthquake within the next couple of decades. And it just has earthquakes on a regular basis. You will have to get prepared for that, as well as the language issues around navigating the bureaucracy involved in restoring utilities, etc. If the electricity goes out, people who need pc and internet to survive (like me) can get very rekked.
My wife and I want to get out of America as well. We've been looking at new Zealand
NZ is good but it probably has the inflation and greed issue as Australia does where all businesses look around and just raise their prices to profit causing groceries and utility bills to go up well above the national inflation average (which is 7.8% in AU).
But I'd say NZ is probably better living condition choice then Australia EXCEPT when it comes to higher paying jobs, those are mostly in Australia. Oh and NZ properties near the beach reach million dollars easy!

Difficult. It's much easier if you invest in a business or start a business and employ 2 people. It's so much cheaper that I might be able to do that. I'm thinking game devs to work on stuff... But I'll have to kill myself working to make enough to pay them lol. I'll try for an extended visa first.. one can always try to teach English (with any degree- I don't qualify) if all else fails, but the work is long and the pay is low. I wouldn't move here for a corporate job. The work/life balance looks terrible.

It's definitely time to leave the USA, this place is sinking like the Titanic....I've been to Japan four times and it's bomb. I just have to work out what I will do for work; working in Japan is not the best. That is one thing that America sill has on Japan, although that might be changing fast.

hey Logan i'm curious what resources you're using to look at apartments? i've been recommended UR housing by a couple friends that have lived in Tokyo for a while mostly because you don't have to pay the stupid key/gift money that's traditional w/ renting in Japan. however UR housing's website is buns and your options, while not laking breadth, lack in depth.
sounds like a freaking good idea! as long as you are cognizant of the culture there. No one likes to be bothered and no one wants to cause a bother there. Respect people's space and treat them like humans not IRL anime-Waifus even when they cosplay.

Honestly, I only need one twice a month to go to the Asian market (there's not one in downtown). I'd sell it and use ride sharing if we weren't in a pandemic. Most people need them to get to work, but public transit is better than most places here.
