I always dug Steve Smith. He is a wonderful all-around drummer... a very musical player. He knows when to lay back, and can also absolutely floor you and mesmerize you with his chops when needed. He is great!

I was very impressed with Steve's singing TA-KI-TA-TA-KA-DI-ME Indian Rhythms. Ed Shaughnessy showed me some of his studies way back in 1978 and it was very fascinating. If you listen to Indian Drummers - Trilok Gurtu is one of my favorites - you can hear their rhythmic integration into music. It's very cool stuff.

There is hyper-awareness of timbre going on here. Deliberate placement of the stick tip on specific areas of the drum head to pull a greater variety of musical tones from the drum. A wonderfully large 'bag of tricks'...the result of a life-long commitment to drums and music. Cheers!
