Aussie here, the price difference might not seem a lot in usd but in aud there’s a larger difference. For example the flawless filter in aus is 70 dollars while the the mcobeauty one is around 30 dollars, also something to note is that a lot of places where mcobeauty is stocked have frequent sales and you can get the products for a lot cheaper !!

Cosmetics that are imported into Australia are so much more expensive than the same product in US/UK or Europe. Also, there are lots of brands who don’t ship to Australia at all. Hello, Merit Beauty, Glossier, Rhodes and so many others. So dupe brands in Australia don’t just offer a slightly cheaper product; sometimes the difference is $50 or is actually the only option for customers in Australia to access a similar product, particularly in regional areas outside of big cities.

I worked at a company who manufacture and distribute the generic OTC drugs, health and beauty aids, vitamins and several other categories. For example if you see the equate brand at Walmart it's probably from this company. I spent 7 years in chemistry and the last 3 years in Regulatory Affairs heading the Department of Health and Beauty Aids.
According to what the laws were when I worked there, making "dupes" is fine as long as you don't violate patents. Where this company could get in trouble is that the packaging cannot be "confusingly similar" to the main brand. Maybe it's fine in Australia but they could get a hit on that here. If they came to me to get that packaging approved I would say no way.
By the way, I did a lot of testing comparing National brand OTC drugs to some of the generic ones and side by side the generic products generally tested quicker acting and more effective. Especially with SPF products.
Now, it's been some time since I worked there and there's a lot more companies making SPF products now but I would say if you're buying it from the drugstore, save your money folks and choose the generic.

The mascara is the “backbone” that MCo beauty has been made on. It’s not a dupe for anything it’s their own formula. It is incredibly popular and you can often get a tube for $12-$15 at the supermarket. The Australian makeup market is heavily impacted by conversion rates and shipping costs. It often makes ranges like Glossier and Charlotte Tilbury out of reach for the masses.

  • @samanthaizundu

I own a lot of MCo beauty and have reviewed most of their range. They have definitely leant (in recent years) into duping not only formula but now packaging, which really put them on the map in Australia, as it was a much more affordable option but just as good in quality. It’ll be interesting to see how this translates in USA. I can confirm though, the quality is very impressive to their OG competitors.

So I personally don't have the budget for high-end products so I appreciate drugstore brands stepping up their game in the last couple of years. I would say 90% of my makeup is drugstore-priced makeup. I do not have a problem with brands taking inspiration from other brands and offering a budget-friendly version as long as there aren't any patent or copyright violations. For instance, Charlotte Tilbury did not lose me as a customer when Elf duped their products because I was never going to buy from Charlotte Tilbury and was already an avid Elf customer.

Cosmetic prices in Australia are wild. Elf Halo Glow Liquid Filter is $35. Elf Contour Wand is $29. Elf Camo Blush is $20. You can see why companies like MCo (used to be named Model Co) exist here. Products that are called "drugstore" prices in the US are priced pretty highly here, certainly not the "drugstore" prices you enjoy there. The problem is not just pricing either. We usually don't get the brands you do but also the product range within the brands. It's so frustrating as a makeup lover.

It is so frustrating watching influencers show & rave about products that we just can’t even get here from overseas websites because they don’t ship here let alone in physical stores (Merit comes to mind). Luxury/high end products that we can get here are more expensive and then if we have to pay postage from overseas in some cases we’re paying as much for postage as the product itself. I just hope McoBeauty dupe more of the brands/products like Merit that we can’t get here.

Small brands don’t always have access to innovations. A lot of times labs only offer large successful companies contracts for their new formulas in order to launch it, and often there are exclusivity rights given to that brand for a period of time. When the exclusivity expires, other brands get access to the formula or packaging and can make their versions. It’s corporate lab hierarchy. I see it time and time again in my field (perfumery). New aromatics are only released to the luxury brands to secure the success of that material by way of largest volume and largest profit margin, then later it trickles down to smaller producers.

They’ve saved money somewhere. Sometimes it’s by using suspish ingredients (asbestos and feces have been found in some cheap makeup), or by unsafe labour practices. We as consumers have a responsibility to educate ourselves and not just look at the price. I’m not saying that this company is not ok, just that cheap is often cheap for a reason. And other pay dearly for that cheap price. Sometimes it even funds terrorism. I really don’t think this is the cape here, I just really want to bring home the point.

@@swedishmake-upgeek5650nah, not true, except for cosmetics pirates that literally whip up a batch of crap at home, and those are not sold in stores. I’ve been a cosmetic chemist for a lot of prestige brands. Finding feces or asbestos in a brand sold in thousands of grocery stores is not gonna happen, ever. This brand is in major markets and no CMO in the us or Europe would ever touch a banned substance- and why would they? You can’t even order asbestos or rat crap…so do you think they’d go out of their way to find a huge volume of these disgusting things? For what? It would destroy their GMO license and shut them down, and no brand found in mass markets like this would risk even releasing a product without doing micro on every batch.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but brands that charge “premium” prices are simply marking up until they hit an 80-90% margin. The ingredients ARE NOT EVEN A FACTOR the vast majority of the time- meaning they don’t use better or even different base ingredients vs a mass brand. The packaging is more expensive…sometimes. Charlotte Tilbury is charging you a ton of money because they can. They may use a trend ingredient or two, they may use a slightly higher end package (but they don’t, trust me), they may fill in Italy (which is pricey, but they probably make up for it in logistics costs), but they’re just gouging you. Mass brands charge way less because they buy in major bulk and their margin is lower. That’s it.

I think you are a lovely person, so please don’t take my disagreement as criticism, I just see it from a different point of view. The point of companies like this is not to innovate, their mission is to dupe, so it may not be a fair expectation to ask them to create new products. Also, most of us don’t get tens of thousands of dollars in cosmetics free in PR, so $20-$30 savings on one product is nothing to sneeze at. Add that up with a dozen products, and you’re talking serious coinage for those on a budget. And if the dupe performs well, I don’t think it is worthy of my disdain, rather, my praise. Thanks for listening.

Australian here. Yes, this mascara was huge when it came out a couple of years ago - it was sold in supermarkets for under 10 bucks back then. It was meant to be a Glossier dupe, but we didn't have Glossier at all in Aus at that time. As soon as the mascara became a hit, they upped the price and rode the wave to dupe further products. Now it's far less afordable, sadly.

Australian here! I have been using the MCO beauty tubing mascara for years it really hits the mark of quality and cost and is one of their oldest most popular products. The thing is this brand is most commonly found in supermarkets and is often on sale and 1/2 price. Most of the brands that we can get in Australia are much more expensive than in the US or we just can’t get here- that includes the affordable brands. For many Australians buying charlotte Tilbury just isn’t available in their town hence the popularity of the dupes. I haven’t really delved into their dupes much I am lucky being near a major city I have much more access to a variety of brands. Having said that if I had access to this brand 10 years ago when I was living in rural towns I would have been all over that!

The reason it sounds so expensive is because they have to charge extra for overseas shipping all their products over there to stock. Here in Australia we’re paying less than 30 Australian dollars for the MCO flawless glow because we obviously don’t have to pay extra for the overseas shipping. Over here we have to pay so much extra on the big US brands because of the shipping price so this brand is really good pricing for us so we don’t need to spend so much on the big brands, they are unfortunately just getting too expensive and unaffordable over in Aus

    • @Giannas1096

European cosmetics products are priced similarly all over the world slightly cheaper in Europe of course. But cosmetics that comes from USA (CT, Tom Ford, Bobbi brown, Elf, Estée Lauder product basically) will have prices jacked up. Why does shipping cost more from US? Because they profit from it that’s why.

ELF Halo is going to cost us $35AUD, I see it is $14USD, so looking at $ exchange rates it should only cost us around $21. Then there is the issue of brands just not being available here. Glossier have only just started to get shipped here, and there is no Merit at all. I remember being excited to try the MCo Glossier balm dupe! I badly wanted CT Pinkgasm and it was sold out for soooo long so I got the MCo dupe and was quite happy with it.
