Hard to believe eric walked on stage in an Indiana venue and plugged in to the amp system and blew everyones mind with his warm up stuff. He looked painfully geeky then and no one thought he could play much till you heard him the first time. Back in the 60's eric was so himself and so cool. It didnt take everyone long to know who and what he was.. That was Derrick and the Dominoes. One never forgets the gifted brilliance of Eric CLapton.

My favourite electric guitarist is a pre-1970 Eric Clapton. He was so cool back then, and his sound was so different to what it is now. I can't believe it's the same guy sometimes!

He was even better from the late 80s to the mid 2000s. 24 Nights and all the blues stuff from a couple of years after are the absolute peak of lead guitar playing.

His tone was otherworldly and I have always tried, when i was a young guitarist, to capture that tone. At this point in his life, he was at the top of his game, and it warms my heart to see this.

It just "clicked" after seeing Clapton in this clip.
3:23 Interesting to see that he's been using that standard phrase for so long. You can still hear it play a key role in a lot of his solos, so I'd say it's worth learning if you're a fan.

Holy crap. I'll be 50 in 2 years and literally just a couple of minutes ago, I ran into a clip where a young George Harrison was talking about Eric Clapton. It just occurred to me to look up young Eric Clapton. I had only known middle aged Eric. Love his music but had no idea he was this dang cool.

It’s a shame that more interviews with musicians don’t deal with their technique. I would’ve loved for this to go on longer. And it was a good interviewer too. He was respectful of the music (unlike many in those days), and he asked some good questions. I would’ve asked Clapton to go into detail about how he learned all this. There wasn’t the wealth of material for learning the guitar back then as there is now.

I remember watching this on a VHS tape over and over again as a teen in the 80's, being in awe of his guitar riffs and trying to learn them.
he was and is still a cool guy and one of the greatest ever , legend!

IIRC he was using a Colorsound wah which had a separate switch as opposed to the Vox which you had to push using the rocker.
