Hi Chris! I'm the creator of this spreadsheet, and I'm glad to hear that you and your subscribers are appreciating it! I do also have lists for Sears, Target, Walmart, and a few other chains - you can find the links to those on the "About" tab, where it says "More retail spreadsheets". I'm also the creator of Bluepages, a wiki for retail and other local history information with over 400,000 pages that anyone can edit, including a page for every Kmart location.
4:51 no, those "closings" you mention were mostly relocations/moves under Antonini. He did a big "redo" of Kmart as he wanted it to be more of an upscale retailer, thus you still had more stores opening than closing as closing stores were rebuilding to other parts of town, or to neighboring regions from tax breaks or expired leases that ran out after 20 years. Look at 1995 onward when more stores began to close than open, that's when they really ramped up, because in 1995, Kmart had its first ever mass closure, real closure where no other building replaced a closing one, unlike the 80's when most were moves/relocations.
Unfortunately we have some more sad news to report. Franchise Group, the parent company of American Freight-which acquired the last remaining Sears Outlet stores while Transform Holdco acquired the Sears Hometown division-has just filed for bankruptcy. American Freight is closing all remaining locations. Another unfortunate closing update
Wow that’s hard to believe I haven’t shopped at Kmart physically since the one in Hiram, Georgia or Mableton, Georgia shut down to be truthful, because the ones in my area were already gone with the exception of PC, Fl it was located in a rough part of town unfortunately so I never went! 🤷🏻♂️ December 2016 was the date it shut, because Sears at the PC Mall didn’t shutter until 2 years after but Hurricane Michael officially killed it, and they are just now demolishing the Sears, Kmart however on 15th Street was demolished for a storage place, and the Hiram location is now a Hobby Lobby and Planet Fitness right before I moved to Florida, and Mableton was abandoned but I saw on the internet it is now home to Ross, Burlington, Five Below, and DD’s discount store! 🤔 The one in Douglasville is now a Burlington, Tile store, and the one in Austell was a Burlington, I heard it relocated! 🤔

American Freight is closing all of their stores. They’re the ones who acquired the remaining Sears Outlet stores a few years ago.
Kmart, Walmart, and Target were all founded in 1962, although Kmart emerged from a previous retailer
