As long as I live, the car I want to own the most is an XJ220. One in green, with the grey wheels. It’s one of the most beautiful cars in the world, ever. They still look new. They don’t look like a 90’s car. They’re absolutely achingly beautiful. I have never seen one in the flesh, if I did, I would spend hours admiring its beauty.

This makes me unreasonably happy. I live four blocks from where TWR USA had their shop in Valparaiso, Indiana and I was friends with a number of the team. When they started the Fast Masters series, Tony Dowe invited me to stop by the shop one afternoon. I walked in and my jaw dropped when I saw a row of XJ220's all being prepped for racing! I had only seen them in magazines and figured I would never see one in person, and now I was standing in front of TEN of them!
I was invited to come down to IRP for Friday practice for several rounds, and I got to ride in the 2-seater "Press car" twice -- once with Davy Jones, and once with Johnny Rutherford. That was an experience I'll never forget. I was really sad when they all went back to England -- I tried to convince them to save money on freight by just letting me drive one home and store it in my garage. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
Still one of my favorite sportscars. Ever. Sleek, curvy, breathtakingly beautiful. The XJ220 never looks old.
Thank you for keeping them alive.

Except unlike the F40 or Stratos, the XJ220 was severely under-appreciated. People were REALLY upset over that V6 swap, even though it was a fantastic engine.

I saw the van in Top Gear. I had a dark blue 1/18 scale XJ220 by Mastio, when I was a teen, and absolutely loved it. The XJ220 is as timeless, and beautiful as a E-Type is. It just goes to show what Jaguar can do when they really try. I can easily understand why Jaguar went with 2wd, but they should have kept the V12, or at lest did a turbo V8. Thank you.

I bought so many Maisto and Bburago model cars as a teenager/young adult, I probably could've bought a goddamn REAL XJ220 instead. Had a whole basement showroom full of the buggers.

I had a 1/12 scale one from Maestro in green. Wish I took more care of it. Honestly one of the best looking cars of all time. It was so right. Just a shame they marketed it as a v12 and 4wd, because it wasn't actually made worse that way.

It's a shame this car came out at the wrong time. It honestly should be going for more than the F50 in auctions for rare classics. Its a much better engineered car considering it came out before the F50. And this is coming from someone who likes the F50 quite a lot. The one other thing about the 90s that was a let down was that the Ford GT90 was never produced.

group 44 held the jag banner in the USA before before TWR. it was a shame they did not capitaliise on their resepective knowledges together, instead of playing against each other? from an ouside perspective I'm speaking. Racing Drivers love the jag v12 not just becacuse of it's power, it was light. It was essentially an F1 design made to a street car, then brought back to race car. i.e. Herron head coventry climax SOHC etc

  • @Pricklyhedgehog72
    @Pricklyhedgehog72 7 лет назад

It is still a remarkable looking car, and I think the video is right in the sense that the Jaguar got some bad press. Certainly elements of the interior were lacking in the refinement department, but the real nail in the coffin was the McLaren F1, which not only dwarfed the XJ220, it redefined the supercar segment.

If you're looking for what this car is, beyond just a Jaguar sport or racing car; but based on a tad more knowledge than seeing its appearance & what cars that eliminates & what slight portion of its insides/interior you may have seen,
then RUclips search of it is stupidly non helpful !
I found your vid. @ the bottom of days of inconsistent search results!

I never believed that these were bad cars and I never believed that it was the car's fault. I believe it was bad timing, both from a financial and from emissions POV. Still; it set out what it achieved to do, even if the route to that success saw changes along the way. To this day; I still feel that this is the most beautiful of cars in a world of many beautiful cars.
But if they'd made the XJ13 then... ;o)

It's more beautiful than any other cars around back in the day. Far nicer than Ferraris , maclaren or Maserati but it's subjective and only the lambos do it in my opinion on styling. The engines and quality seems far better than many other Jag models including the F type.

Fantastic story. I didn't like the styling when they came out however I have to say now that they have aged incredibly well. I have a feeling that the Mclaren speedtail will go the same way. I remember seeing one of these cordoned off in a Jaguar showroom waiting for its owner. I don't know if anybody has but it would be good to see one as it was destined to be. i.e V12 and 4WD.

You have to sit in an contemporary Ferrari F40 to understand what I mean by that. Many hyper cars back then had unfinished interiors or just really cheap ones.
The Jaguar XJ220 was all creamy leather by comparison. As beautiful as the exterior. Simple by today's electronic standard but super clean back then.

beautiful, the poor fools who poo pooed this because of the lack of v12 ended up missing out on one of the best "ultra rare" jags of all time.
the wood body is absolutely stunning and an incredible snap shot of the history of this misunderstood and obviously underappreciated supercar.
thank you for preserving these for the future car affectionados to be able to appreciate and admire.

I've loved this car ever since it came out in the late 80s. They look so sleek and as though they are going 200mph when standing still. Unfortunately I know I'll never have the chance of even sitting in one as even if I got the chance I don't think I'd be able to get in as I'm disabled and there's no chance or I'd be in excruciating pain.

very impressive work, love the XJ220, sleek yet very modern design, very sad that they decided to abandon the cx-17 project

On this video at the time of 4,23 there is a shot of the boot on the xj220, is this easily done to deepen the boot as the shallow boot is the cars only drawback.
