Jesus told one man to sell everything and give it to the poor. The man had justified himself by daring to tell Jesus that he had followed perfectly all of the ten commandments all of his life. Jesus pointed out in the sermon on the mount that such a feat for man is impossible. he was showing the man what separated the man from God. Jesus had rich friends such as Martha and Mary and Lazerus. They had him often to their house and he didnt tell them to give up their wealth. What Jesus wants is to be more important to a person than anything, and He knew that possessions could easily get in the way of that.
Jesus didn't renounce violence. He flipped tables and whipped money-changers. He told his disciples to carry their swords, and if they didn't have a sword, to sell their coat and buy one.
@@lauracaelestis9167 Did you read the verses in question? It says from now on people in families will be divided and enemies of each other...that has little to do with "religious customs" and everything to do with righteousness vs. unrighteousness.
I pointed out in my book Kissing Fish: christianity for people who don't like christianity (in the chapter on the Bible) how evangelical and fundamentalist Christians tend to give priority to Paul's letters (including the ones not written by him) and John, whereas mainline Protestant and progressive Christians tend to give priority to the Gospels - particularly the synoptic ones. Each tribe has their own "canon within the canon." That said, recent scholarship has pointed out that Paul was highly on board with Jesus' message and that it's a distortion to interpret Paul as being primarily about theology or doctrine, he was speaking politically in his rhetoric. See "The Real Paul" by Bernard Brandon Scott Roger Wolsey, author, "Kissing Fish: christianity for people who don't like christianity"
The church I go to does stress tithing and helping people, and we do. If people gave 90 percent of their wealth then they would be a burden to others and couldn't survive on their income

Not man can call Jesus Lord except through the Holy Spirit. All works done in the flesh is good for nothing, it is the Spirit that gives life. The whole Bible is Jesus, not just the red letters, but only through the Holy Spirit can you know that.
Tony Campolo seems to be making a good case against the need for organized religion, the church, or even faith. Secular, sustainable philanthropy is demonstrably the most effective way to achieve the goal of the elimination of poverty.

Bonnie Bell " Jesus Christ as lord and trust that he took our sin in his flesh on the cross to satisfy God's justice against the wicked behavior man is born into" What sin have you committed, Bonnie Bell? If the fault is yours, why should your Jesus take your deserved punishment for you? If the sin is not yours, but the fault of your ancestors, why should you be punished? How can three day's death for an innocent person, followed by an eternity of blissful life, appease the wrath of your God against the wickedness of all mankind? Your account of your God's justice makes no sense. It sounds crazy, and immoral; the sort of thing primitive, uncivilized tribal chiefs make up. Many immoral tribal religions believe in the effectiveness of blood sacrifice of innocent people.

I think Tony has been preaching for 50 some years. I bet he’s pretty familiar with Scripture. The Beatitudes is about the Kingdom of Heaven. The perfect prayer, The Lord’s Prayer , includes the Kingdom of Heaven. The parable of not worrying is concerned with seeing his kingdom of heaven.
I live below the poverty level. Thankful for what I have. I’m comfortable. “Poor” is something that only affects the Body, flesh. Rich in Spirit . Life is life Paul said “I’m Content is whatever state I’m in.”
1) The Epistles of Paul and the Gospels do not contradict each other. Paul taught nothing but Jesus and 2) Mother Teresa is considered more of a "saint" than say John Piper or Eric Ludy in the modern world. Why? Scripturally, we can argue that the latter are doing the harder work because they are dealing with spiritually poverty. I understand what Tony is saying. But let's not lose the deeper issue of spiritual slavery in our fervor to physically serve the poor (which is also good).
