- The Bells Are Ringing Out (1996): A profile of Russia's bell ringers.

Synopsis: One man stands attached to nine bells by a web of ropes. Arms, hands and feet yank the ropes to create a symphony of sound. This is Pavel Markelov, guardian of an ancient Russian tradition - bell ringing. Twelve months ago, St. Sophia was a silent wreck. Now her belfries ring out fortissimo. The end of Communist rule has seen a renaissance in bell ringing, but it has also highlighted a shortage not only of bell ringers but also of bells. A factory which manufactures sheet metal for rockets is now making bells as well. In the new Russia, the traditions of the past look for harmony with the technology of the future.

I was just reading a book on Stalin and how he melted down and removed so many of Russia's church bells. It makes me undescribably happy to see that this tradition is being revived.
How scared and insecure any public officials would be to toss these in wells and swamps. How wonderful to hear you again!!
Pavel actually looks like an Icon painting as well...
It is totally awesome that Pavel Markelov is rescuscitating ang guarding this priceless but almost lost tradition.
thank you ! thank you ! thank you !
Thats all. Jesus Christ has blessed you for the bells. Никто не может служить двум господам. Ser! Bozhe blagoslovi, Maranatha!
Very interesting, and so different from our English full circle ringing which I have been doing for 20 years.
I get the impression that since this video was made, that a lot more Russians have learnt bell ringing. It's heartening to see children ringing as well.
The bell ringer says that he visited Danilov Monastery and was tought a few secrets and techniques. He complains that there is no place to rehearse and there are very few people left who remember the technique and they are very old. The bell maker says that the business is growing even though some secrets of bell making are lost for ever which makes it difficult to recreate the trade. It's very important to have the big bell in place, it is THE heart, the core of the bell performance.
Yes, the bell markets seen in photos from Tsarist times are back and doing business again. Thank God!
what great hope -- from chemical warehouse to bell ringing --
two sides of our human nature
Russian bells cannot be beat. English bells are swung, not clapped stationary. No comparison.
Russian bells sound wilder and more dissonant - like wild horses. British bells are more sedate.
@ilietisbitul This is of course true, but in an increasingly secular society we would appreciate more bells ringing out a reminder of this. Bells are a praise instrument towards Jesus.
What an amazing character! there is something about a bell that asks to be rung. We have two servant's bells [Victorian] attached to the wall, and I find it hard to pass without a ''dinnnnnnnnnnnngggggg.dinga'' but this chap is astonishing.
February 1996 what a happy day
Это лучший звонарь в мире!!!
Like a puppet master-all the strings-looke ''trance like'' to do....and so cold....see his breath fogging the air....
I don't understand Russian, but I guess he is saying something about a good bell casting being important for a good sound?? after all , a bell's looks aren't important..it is the sound that matters. [we have 4 small servant bells, one very pretty but sounds dull, and the one with the most beautiful voice looks the plainest.
Amen 🙏
I AM FROM THE FUTUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and these bells are OutStanDing
i don't understand why the reporter is speaking english, but the bell ringer is speaking russian and isn't being translated

churches are bodies of limestone. just as good as those of flesh. buildings are creatures, like trees.

I want to reconnect with my ancient Russian ancestral wisdom. I'm talking the pre-Christian, pre-orthodox church. I'm talking my dear Pagan Slavic ancestors. So sad that Russians don't even know that the Orthodox Church/christianity is foreign invader into Russia, and that it was forced on ancient Russian/Slavic people. So sad that Russians don't know that there were Russian inquisitions, and there was a massive killing of Slavic Pagan shamans & wise men. The truth is now coming out
