Director’s bio
Kate Tsang is an award-winning writer/director based in Los Angeles. Her short film “So You’ve Grown Attached” was a national finalist for the Student Academy Award, won Best Narrative Short at San Francisco International Film Festival, and was nationally broadcast on PBS. She’s currently developing her first feature film and also in production on an animated short, Welcome to Doozy, with the Sony Animation and Frederator Go!Cartoon incubator. Kate spent the first decade of her life bouncing between the sleepy suburbs of California and the hectic city of Hong Kong. In her teenage years, she was inspired by Dana Scully from The X-Files to become a medical examiner so she shadowed local CSI officers and morticians to
prep herself for a gory future. All that changed when she took her first film class at UC San Diego, and consequently broke her mother’s heart by deciding to pursue a career in the arts. Kate earned an MFA from NYU’s prestigious film program where she won awards from the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association and National Board of Review for her work. Her mom has since forgiven her.

Ok, I love this. No twists, no shocks, just painfully beautiful.
This is so beautiful and nostalgic. The way it's in black and white gives a mournful feel to it for the imaginary friend and for the end of being a child. Incredibly moving
She has the classiest imaginary friend ever.
Fantastic filmmaking, Ex was so expressive and didn't even have a face
Oh good call naming him "Ex" instead of just "X". Insightful.
Yea so true good observation
@@LabGecko Ecks
This was heart warming. It also conveyed the message that at some point, children need to be allowed the freedom to individuate.
Wow. I was expecting something sinister, then I just got engrossed and feeling for the two main characters. This is just fantastic.
Ditto. I was expecting a horror story here. The whole sitting in a chair, staring at her sleeping, while squeaking the toy in his hand.....
Darn I missed the end because someone in the house started cutting onions and the tears are pouring down my face ... this was marvelous, what a great story and lesson, well done ... thanks for this upload
Mmmhmmm... Onions huh? Ok guy, we will blame the onions. 😉
This was very good. You made the imaginary friend come alive in my mind. I mourned for the loss she does not realize she has experienced.
Man, that really had a look to it! I loved that guy's blank face and floaty eye spots. Nice change from all the apocalyptic visions. The Invisible Friend office was great!
So was the bar
Ah, poor invisible friends. Created from loneliness, then cast aside. Love this short, so much emotion without words or expressions from the friend, wow, great short!!
I was expecting the imaginary friend to be scary towards other people, but was surprised by the entire movie. It was so sincere and we LOVED it!!!
Well. To be honest. I was a bit frightened at first.
This should be a series!
All my imaginary friends dumped me... because their parents said I wasn't real...
Happens to the best of us
Keep it imaginary, man!
oh how the tables have turned
Don't worry, people say that about God all the time.
Hahahahaha you poor little thing, big people can be so mean
Not for everyone, but totally unpretentious, funny, smart, and charming. Plus, the actor playing X has a rockin' bod.
This channel is so under appreciated
Brings back painful memories of how my imaginary friend dumped me for my best friend. They are still together.
This reminds me of monsters inc. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but the imaginary friend looks kind of like a father figure. And it would make sense considering the girls father isn't shown.
Yeah Ex the imaginary friend is supposed to represent the father who either left them or passed away
Also there's a theory in monsters inc that boo is Violet Parr and she is fond of Sully because he kinda looks like Bob (her father)
It reminds me of drop dead Fred.
The guy reminds me of myself trying to help people but then ending up getting dumped.
Portrays my life.
Great story! I'm so glad we're not held hostage by Hollywood anymore.

This is great.
You look like him
@@spartes4024 he is him
I had an imaginary friend. His name was Mr. Easy. Boy do I need him now, lol!
Tell me about him.
Hehe - reminds me of when I read Winnie the Pooh to my younger brother and he bawled his eyes out at the end, because Jacob also realized you have to grow up and let go of imaginary friends. Now a lot later, my younger brother has become an ace in the animation/vfx industry and is very much in touch with his inner child, so maybe you can still visit that place now and then?
This is a nice film.
I never had an imaginary friend but I had a Bassett hound growing up.
Oh my god that was the most beautiful sci-fi short film I've ever seen.
I just watched this with my 8-year old & we were both so touched! Very well done!
Hmmm, could be used when a child has similar 'issues'... but having the human 'helper' suggest that it is time for the child to say goodbye on their own terms, like the way the ImaFriend did. ( ImaFriend = Imaginary Friend )
BearBear... Classic.
Love these shorts they are always entertaining and at times carry a profound meaning and message. Well done.
I never comment...ever. But this was amazing. Absolute favourite from this channel. Well done.
this was beautiful. I'm much happier now....
Your comment makes us much happier too.
This was great and definitely different. The person or persons who made this have a great imagination and mind for something new and not the same old same old. Well done guys.
What a fantastic idea. Great story, beautiful production. I love it.
That was amazing. Best DUST film I've seen so far. Just amazing.
Wow you make some really good short films, with lots of deep meanings.
They don't make them, they just get permission to "present" them on the dust channel. It gets more recognition for the creator, and dust profits off of it. Win-win situation, really.
The fact that these Dust shorts can end really happily or excruciatingly grimly is giving me a permanent anxiety disorder; but other than that, I love them!
Wow! This was really well done. I was crying at the end.
Gave me a beetlejuice vibe when the parts of the imaginary world were on.
One of my favourite videos yet. Very sweet and poignant. Well done to the creators, editors, director, and production team. Really well done to the Actors!!
Highly impressive and satisfying. I expect equally superb work from Kate Tsang in future endeavors. Well done!
We expect nothing less from her, too. What an incredible director.
My imaginary friend was more of a more confident version of myself, tended to get me in trouble every now and then.
I looked regretfully at my stuffed panda bear while I watched this movie.
So well done, but incredibly sad. I have always felt like that imaginary friend before retirement since i was little.
"You're future is dust"
Nice. ☠️
Thanks for that over and over and over again.
Charming, engrossing and a reminder that our Imagination was,and always can be,our best friend.
This made me cry. Great little film.
Such a heart warming and beautiful tale. All the acting is top notch, I loved the animation and it was brave to film in black and white but it really did suit it. Fantastic!!!
Why do I keep thinking ‘ Calvin and Hobbes ‘ ?
Me: Henry
Yes!!
I was expecting the boy to have his own imaginary friend, and for the two of them to push the kids together.
This was a well put together short, (minus the bad bear costume). It was full of emotion and sacrifice. I was so hoping that the new kid was going to say something like, "Why don't you bring your imaginary friend over to join us?" Or maybe, "Wait for my friend to get out of that chair before you sit down." Reason being that as we get older we forget what its like to be youthful and full of imagination.
I kinda expected the boy to have an ImaFriend too, and the IFs to agree that the kids should be alone with each other for a while, and they watch together from a distance. The kids look up and wave to their IFs, notice each other, and explain to each other, and bond in that way, and as they talk, the two IFs fade away, realizing it is their time to leave the children. Then they are shown again at the Reassignment Bureau together... and given a bonus for their realizations of when to leave.
That made me tear up.
Holli Wood me too!
So?
I think I got something in my eye.. must've been cutting lemons earlier..
USS Voyager why do you have to be so rude like jeez
USS Voyager no the only pathetic person here is you. 😬
the little girl can act! good film!
Speaking as someone who remembers my imaginary friends, this was absolutely fantastic
Really great special effects, costumes, acting, writing!! I don't think the lack of color or music really worked but it's a fact that this is truly spectacular.
Nothing like I thought it would be. So well done. So enjoyable to watch. Thanks Dust for the entertainment that today is so hard to find on regular TV.
Makes me cry every time I watch it.
Partly because I wanted an imaginary friend when I was young, but was convinced they didn't like me either... had to settle with reading books and playing baseball
I can't get over how much I really like this short film. Its such a creative concept. The art design is so unique with its mix of childhood whimsy and a partially creepy imaginary friend design. its an interesting combination that works well. The music with the Theremin also adds immensely to the style. Well done!
I cannot believe this doesn't have more views...!! Oddly beautiful piece of entertainment. Almost poetic...
Loved it. Wasn't sci fi but I don't mind. Anything weird is cool on Dust.
This reminds me of the song by Peter, Paul and Mary "Puff The Magic Dragon". It's like an updated version.
That's a great song.
@@watchdust Great use of the theremin!
Why was this soo nostalgic. Almost like it was tugging on some deep-seated memories.
8:04 'i think its not going terrible' words to live by
Well done. Most of the people around the world never let their imaginary friend leave them... I enjoyed this work very much. Next!
WOW, did not disappoint. It was supposed to be horror and it *was.* Despite not being a non-insano action plot with gooey monsters, it was quite existentially horrific, to contemplate the relationships we set aside as we grow into new people. Ex was fantastic, the relationship between the two new friends was fantastic, even retirement bear was awesome. I was moved and gently creeped out.
As silly as the theme might sound to a casual onlooker, I loved this. Have probably watched it several times. Liked the happy ending where the young lady who is facing growing up, starts to acquire socialization skills with her peers, including the opposite sex. And our imaginary friend probably decided to take that retirement package as he rides into the sunset...Good times...nice ending!
This was waaaaay above par! Absolutely brilliant! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The good news is that, if you loved them and you make it, your imaginary friend comes back, some sooner than later. Mine came back when I was about 50 years old and now noone really cares that that carry on with them.
I was so sad for him but also happy for both somehow.
Amazing piece.
Can I just say in general, this is the best subscription I have ever come across! Everyone I've ever seen has been good and mine tantalizing! What is this this is awesome!
That was exceptional. I mean that had a real nice story, it was sweet, the kids were pretty good actors, and even though the costumes were "low budget" they were great. Hats off to everyone involved.
"God is like an imaginary friend for adults"
Reminds me of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends that I watched with my son. Wonderful.
Love this channel, loved this video. I was genuinely sad when he left. Keep up the good work, I like that not all of your videos have somber ending. However on the videos like this one I’m glad they do. I just don’t always want the happy go lucky endings, but I don’t always want a depressing ending. So I just want to say I love the balance you guys have. I was sad and happy at the same time, a blissful sorrow.
Imaginary friends, everyone had them, that the sweet nostalgia. Stuff animal friends, were there, when you were alone and no other were around.
I still have mine, who have transform or meta morph into AD&D/rpg characters. Ahh the memories...
Thanks for the trip!!
This is kinda like a wholesome version of Drop Dead Fred. I love it!
This is such an amazing piece of film, and reading the accomplishments and accolades due to Kate Tsang in the comments section was no surprise, though it was wonderful to see the roots of this art. Amazing storytelling, great visuals, and just generally an excellent "use of imagination"!
Great story by Kate Tsang !! My child had an imaginary friend till about grade school. This story brought it home. Thank you!!
It has a Beetlejuice quality in it, loved it.
6:10 I did an actual spit take when I read that as "topless". O_o
Welcome back to the twilight zone
or am I the only person thinking that whenever I watch DUST films
A number of them are better than the new episodes of Twilight Zone.
true
"...And that's how my parents met." - Grandma Foster.
I still have my imaginary friends. They're not allowed to retire, I'm far too immature.
This is by far my favorite short film I’ve ever seen DUST make and I would like to see more.
I am sure I have seen a full length movie with the exact same plot. However, this did the same job in 1/8th of the time.
Well done!
The movie was probably Drop Dead Fred
@@ashleysaylor125 preferred this one.
Imaginary friends have it rough. A short time of happy, then a forever of being without their first and best friend.
They should at least have the option of being assigned a new friend. I thought the agency was going to be an employment agency.
So imaginary friends are real. But then they wouldn't be imaginary in that case, would they?
Who doesn't love a good paradox?
So Buddha and Jesus are real, but Hell is imaginary. So we can nuke it then, Johnson !
At least they have a nice bar to hangout in.. LOL ;)
they are called zana !! they're real beings
Real to you. Imaginary to others.
To paraphrase Obi-Wan both statements are true, from a certain perspective.
such a great story! DUST always has the greatest little things to get into your brain and make you think! you guys ROCK!!!
Excellent, tugged at the old heartstrings just enough.
Thumbs up because of the noises that the sandwich made @ 1:08
This short is awesome in all the ways. I felt it was a very structured story and very well produced. Well done!
Watching Dust after a long night's work is incredibly relaxing..
Dust @ 3 a.m. 'WATCH DUST LIKE THIS VIDEO'
Oh good, something light, cute, and fun for a change. This fits right in with DUST's work, always something different, sometimes creepy and heavy, sometimes just - This !
I want to see a series of these. I want to see ones where the imaginary friends become friends, and conspire to get their kids together ... and when the kids hate each other, but the imaginary friends carry on a secret romance. I want to see Ben have a total mental and emotional meltdown so that Bearbear can come back and help him one last time (let's face it, that kid in the picture doesn't look too emotionally sturdy). I want to see imaginary friends helping to bury bodies.
Childhood's end I guess, and awesome usage of black and white format, reminds me of B&W films of the 1950s to 1970s.....
Superb!! Great idea, great production, acting, completely loved it!!! Thanks 'Dust'! Congratulations to all those involved in this production!!
This actually made me ready eyed ... So damn sweet
DUST FOR THE WIN again
*teary
I love this! It made me remember the book I read called ‘memoirs of an imaginary friend’
Beautiful. Brings back fond memories of Drop Dead Fred.
Beautiful. Made me cry.
This is one of the saddest films I have ever seen but I loved it still
Fantastic short! Humorous, touching, and relatable.
9:42 the ghost is getting turnt! 😎
Lol I smiled at thatone
I really deeply love all this. You all are wonderful, beautiful, awesome!
Imaginary friends are much better than imaginary enemies. But with an imaginary friend like that then who needs to imagine an enemy?
