Tag, You're It" is about Cry Baby getting kidnapped, utilizing the children's game "tag" as a metaphor. After Cry Baby breaks up with Johnny, she is very vulnerable and alone and gets kidnapped by a "wolf". As the song begins, it is evident that the "wolf" has been watching her for a while, and sees her as the perfect victim. The "wolf" pulls up alongside Cry Baby in his car and offers her candy. The tinted windows will hide her once she’s inside. Despite the fact that she says no, he continues to pursue her and chase her through the parking lot, meaning that she's running and he's following after her. The phrase, "Tag, you're it" is a metaphor for him catching her. He finally catches up to her, pushing her down to stop her from running and covers her mouth so she cannot scream. She still screams for help, but her situation is starting to seem hopeless. She attempts to fight back by biting him, despite being incapacitated in the lyric, "little bit of poison in me, I can taste your skin in my teeth". She is taken to his basement where he is fascinated by the proof of her presence through something as simple as her breathing. As the last part of the chorus is sung her tone shifts to a more bitter and angry tone, having given up hope of being rescued. The repetition of the phrase makes it seem as if it was replaying it in her head. 🎉THIS IS WHAT I FOUND ONLINE🎉

If you‘re like me and you want to sing along to the song but don’t know the lyrics well (since the lyrics fade in and out) and the lyrics are not in the description, this comment is useful for me! :)
This song reminds me a lot of the horrible things I went through in my life, including depression and anxiety. Especially, the line "run through the parking lot" because I have always run from my problems and believed that I am always a target for others.
This song makes me bust down in tears every time. let me explain. when me and three of my friend lived in a small neighborhood with just us (i still live next to them) there was always this creepy house that me and my friends would go up to and make dumb theories that he kidnapped children. one of my friends had another friend that lived in that creepy house with her dad (the creepy guy). she went missing awhile go but we didn’t ask him or anything. he never came out of his home, never mowed the lawn, or moved his car. it was a dump. i didn’t know what he looked like at all so i was a little scared of him, especially because we called him a kidnapper. one day me and one of my friends were sitting outside, laying in the grass on her front lawn. we were having fun until we heard someone screaming from that house. we both agreed i should go back to my house so there i went. my dad and mom heard it too apparently and thought it was just us screaming, but of course it wasn’t. my parents went to go knock on his door and no answer. i decide to go back up to my friends house because i thought it was fine. my other friend joined us too and we didn’t tell her about the guy because we didn’t want to freak her out. we go walking up the road as we pass his house. it was pitch black out but we were used to it because we always stayed out late. the street lights were on though. one of my friends realize he walked out of his house and was staring at us. we all ran but i was wearing flip flops. he was running after me and my friend were screaming to catch up and i was crying. i quickly tried to take my flip flops off but of course it was way too late. he dragged me inside his home and he raped me for 2 years. reminder, i was 10 at the time and was 12 when he was finally found. instead of taking me to his home, he went to his friend house and they would all rape me together. it’s the most disgusting thing that has ever happened to me in my life. the cops finally found me when i hid in a closet and called the cops. i needed an abortion because he got me pregnant i had to go to jail longer than all the men that did those awful things to me. it wasn’t my fault i got pregnant but it was the law. my parents and everyone were so terrified and scared for me. 4 years later i still get nauseous at the thought. ‘running through the parking lot’ always reminds me of that and makes me cry, please be careful kids. (No hate to melanie!)
I love the way she pronounces or says the last words in her sentences with this song. I can’t explain it but it just sits right with my ears. Parts like 0:12-0:150:31 and 2:09. 2:31 is also my favorite part and how her voice gets more in the feel of the song and intensifies at 2:42/2:46. It’s beautiful. I know the lyrics and meaning behind this song is sad though, however I still like it and appreciate melanie’s animated voice style during singing.
Confession here, when I was in elementary I heard this song a few times and on my 9th birthday I sang the chorus on the intercom and told people that I had made it, I didn’t know what copyright was at the time but I still felt guilty that I had lied. One of my day care teachers realized that it wasn’t mine when she looked it up, I wasn’t in trouble nor was I picked on, but I still felt terrible, now I know what the song actually means and seemed worse for me, and ever since then I didn’t want to listen to the song because of that. Now I’m here to let go of the past and enjoy the voice of the person who really made the song, Sorry Melanie… 😢
I have kept this secret for years, convincing myself that it wasn't a big deal and I wasn't hurt by it. The thought of accepting that my best friend sent me to the abyss seems insane. Even typing that doesn't feel real to me. I started telling this story to those closest to me as somewhat of a joke, "haha can you believe this crazy night!?" But I began to get responses I wasn't expecting. Concerned ones. It's hard to say someone you loved sent you into the abyss. Someone you STILL love. The thought of writing this and having the world see it terrifies me. Especially because of who this person is. This was my best friend. She took me in, which I was so grateful for. I felt like I owed her my life. And my life began to revolve around hers. I had my own problems, but if I could focus on her life, I could put off dealing with my own inner turmoil for just a bit longer. Some of her fans became my fans, but their loyalty never strayed from her. They are dedicated. She's perfect. To the public, she can do no wrong. She's there for her fans. She gets it, she's different. When faced with a friend who really needed help though, I can honestly say she let me down completely. During the most difficult time in my life, my rock bottom. Her power and control over me grew and I grew. And I was silenced. While being open about realizing how much help I needed, I was made to feel guilty. I had to apologize for having an extreme panic attack, where I thought I was going to die. Because it ruined her night. Endless incidents like this. I had become a skill issue lol
I really loved Melanie Martinez, I been listening to her songs for like ever seems I was 8. And now I am 16 and still listening to it. I do know the deep meaning. Good I don’t really relate to it I never been kidnapped. But her songs are really amazing but also sad deep meanings.
When I listen to this song I think of the man as anxiety, and me as Melanie. I can also picture everything happening in my head from the lyrics. This is a great song and I love it. :) (That sounds really stupid but I am born for music so this is how I think with some songs lol)

Can't listen to this without thinking of my first boyfriend. Didn't understand what "no" meant and was abusive in every form Including physical. Also tried isolating me from my friends and family. For the longest time it worked too since it was my first relationship and I had no idea how they were supposed to go. Let him convince me I was the bad guy till one day I couldn't take it anymore. Broke things off and told him if he ever came around me again he'd better hope the cops got to him before my dad did.
Most of these are obvious, but these are my theories about the lyrics. Took the words right out my mouth: Either scared her so bad she couldn't speak or he covered her mouth so she couldn't. Little bit of poison in me: He drugged her, and she still feels the effects. I can taste your skin in my teeth: She bit him when she was fighting him off and drew blood. Can anybody hear me am I hidden underground: I believe she was either in the basement of his home or this is her POV after she was killed, and is LITERALLY underground, in a shallow grave.
I don’t know how but this song helps me….. my dad was a narcissistic farther and I was the scape goat of the family. It hurts me so much that he used me and emotionally abused me and groomed me. It hurts but this song is amazing and helps me. My step sister was the golden child she could do no wrong but me the scapegoat got all the back lash and got all the blame. I’m 15 now this had happened this year but I’m stronger. And my future kids won’t go through what I have been through and that’s comforting.
I don't think I'll ever forget being chased down the road to my house by a full grown man at age 13-14. Out on a walk at night on my road, pretty safe area when this guy just came out of a half built house and chased me for nearly a mile. Never saw his face because it was to dark. He followed me home and stalked outside my window for a bit till I never saw him again. My parents wouldn't believe me till about two years later when they realized my story never changed. "He chased me and he wouldn't stop". I remember not hearing his footsteps behind me anymore and I turned around and he was less than five feet away from me, I was lucky that I got away.

Lyrics:
Looking at me through your window
Boy, you had your eye out for a little
"I'll cut you up and make you dinner
You've reached the end, you are the winner"
Rolling down your tinted window
Driving next to me real slow, he said
"Let me take you for a joyride
I've got some candy for you inside"
Running through the parking lot
He chased me and he wouldn't stop
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Grabbed my hand, pushed me down
Took the words right out my mouth
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Can anybody hear me I'm hidden under ground
Can anybody hear me am I talking to myself
Saying, "tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it"
He's saying, "tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it"
Little bit of poison in me
I can taste your skin in my teeth
"I love it when I hear you breathing
I hope to god you're never leaving"
Running through the parking lot
He chased me and he wouldn't stop
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Grabbed my hand, pushed me down
Took the words right out my mouthf
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Can anybody hear me I'm hidden under ground
Can anybody hear me am I talking to myself
Saying, "tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it"
He's saying, "tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it"
Eenie meenie miny mo
Get your lady by her toes
If she screams, don't let her go
Eenie meenie miny mo
Your mother said to pick the very best girl
And I am
Running through the parking lot
He chased me and he wouldn't stop
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Grabbed my hand, pushed me down
Took the words right out my mouth
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it

Parts like 0:12-0:15 0:31 and 2:09. 2:31 is also my favorite part and how her voice gets more in the feel of the song and intensifies at 2:42/2:46. It’s beautiful. I know the lyrics and meaning behind this song is sad though, however I still like it and appreciate melanie’s animated voice style during singing.

This song can be interpreted in so many ways, idk why but I really love this song.
I love Melanie she is so good and this is one of my favorite songs from her
I have kept this secret for years, convincing myself that it wasn't a big deal and I wasn't hurt by it.
I hope you're fine now ? No one deserves to live this type of shit..
shes retard no offense
idk what that word means but i hope ur ok
I really loved Melanie Martinez, I been listening to her songs for like ever seems I was 8. And now I am 16 and still listening to it. I do know the deep meaning. Good I don’t really relate to it I never been kidnapped. But her songs are really amazing but also sad deep meanings.

@daarinchaaan I thouroughly enjoyed it
This video was well put together great job 👍
Most of these are obvious, but these are my theories about the lyrics.
Took the words right out my mouth: Either scared her so bad she couldn't speak or he covered her mouth so she couldn't.
Little bit of poison in me: He drugged her, and she still feels the effects.
I can taste your skin in my teeth: She bit him when she was fighting him off and drew blood.
Can anybody hear me am I hidden underground: I believe she was either in the basement of his home or this is her POV after she was killed, and is LITERALLY underground, in a shallow grave.
I think it's about SA and the hidden underground is the person kidnapped and that nobody couldn't hear it?

I don’t know how but this song helps me….. my dad was a narcissistic farther and I was the scape goat of the family. It hurts me so much that he used me and emotionally abused me and groomed me. It hurts but this song is amazing and helps me. My step sister was the golden child she could do no wrong but me the scapegoat got all the back lash and got all the blame. I’m 15 now this had happened this year but I’m stronger. And my future kids won’t go through what I have been through and that’s comforting.
This is amazing, it's so underrated kewl up the good work!!!
