I am a tesla Mechanic from Fremont/ CA factory. I'm impressed by your work 👏 well done 👏 it just you need to double check those clipping on pipes. It usually came loose if it doesn't hear double click.
It's every time required to introduce these kind of repairs from outside to tesla. Nobody internally at TM is even considering such a customer centric approach. Great work eG.
Something similar happened with my Ford Fusion Hybrid. I wasn't mentally prepared to spend ~$100 on four coolant lines. Instead, I spent $8 on some plumbing fittings at Home Depot, and now everything is up and running. I noticed that many people in the US believe that the only way to fix such issues is to buy a new part. However, often, you could fix it for cheap, and the final result will be more reliable than the original solution. Well done, sir.
@@daves2624 only if it can be proved that the repair work was responsible for any injury. In this case the repair work will clearly work under 'normal' conditions . It may fail with another smack but no sooner than the original did. The only issue i would have with that repair is the brass fitting. We don't know what the long term effects of that on the coolant will be plus if that fitting was plastic I would have used a plastic weld to reconnect everything making it more permanent and possibly stronger. But either way its 'probably' good.
Now I also do see you guys (electrified Garage) a selling a much heavier duty protective belly pans compared to stock ones to prevent this from happening. That’s very cool. 👍👍
I used to be in charge of ultrasonically welding brass inserts into plastic car powertrain parts like water outlets and as a hobby built a custom water cooled computer for myself. This repair is what I would do as well.
I just experienced the exact same thing. Awaiting final verdict from Tesla service center but told it's highly likely they'll need to replace the entire battery pack for the exact same reason as discussed in this story. How stupid!
Brilliant! Nice work. I have heard about this type of damage leading to this repair which is why I installed the aluminum bash plate in place of the flimsy pan. Incidentally I also installed aluminum plating on the rear side of the wheel liners as additional protection of all the coolant lines. My Tesla is lowered and raked so…not much room for deer heads or chunks of ice to move around.
Where do the coolant lines run on the sides of the vehicle? For example, are they towards the inside of the jack lift location under the solid battery cover? Or are they towards the outside of the jack lift location under the plastic side rail panels?
I'm installing an instructor's brake for my driving school Tesla. Is it safe to drill in front of the passenger seat and underneath the driver's brake pedal?
why those things were never recessed push fit (pop in/pop out) in the first instance is beyond me Even then, you have to imagine that you'd want to make sure that the area around it was hardened also. Just seen you guys on The Verge brought up in a reporters article about the Ford eCrate engine. Surprised you've not released any vids in 9 months though!
did you have any problems with reduced coolant flow due to the now smaller ID of the brass union? How did you estimate the acceptability of the smaller ID? thanks
This is why every Model-3 and Model-Y owner NEEDS to install aftermarket underbody plates. The fiberboard doesn't provide ANY protection whatsoever. I had one on my 3 P+ when I ran over a huge piece of metal. The plate protected the battery.
I just got quoted $21K for my Model Y Performance that had a rock fly up and break the coolant line. I believe that it is the same failure. Going tomorrow with the insurance appraiser to see the issue. I would gladly pay $700 to have this fixed this way. I would already have my car back and it would be a better repair. I also plan on getting the aluminum skid plate for $300 to hopefully avoid this in the future.
I want information about an EV hybrid build. Example 2019 Ford fiesta SE, I want to add rear wheel EV power like hub motors. Or other options...? Do you have any information?
Hi, I am in the uk and think I have the same problem. Could you please tell the size of the tap you use and and the size of the barrel nipple. Thanks Gareth
It's a very typical Tesla procedure. Even some other establishments in fact. Don't repair it, replace it. Who cares how much it costs? A lot of it has to do with the time it takes (faster to just swap out) and the competency level of the technicians.
Hi, do you have any advice or guidance you could give to someone trying to start an independent EV repair shop like yours (not in your market area, not intended to compete for your customers)? or maybe resources you could point people to as they consider it? Thank you!!!
If this type of fault becomes common enough then it would warrant a custom made part that screws straight in after tapping the battery. It would not be difficult to make.
nice repair , everyone has the right to get his car fixed reasonably... one q though doesn't leakage occur at the junction of brass and plastic due to different expansion qualities?
Nicely done. But aren't you worried about the restrictions it will cause? Inner diameter is probably 50% smaller so in extreme conditions (hot/cold or heavy driving) coolant flow will be reduced significantly.
@@rschneid1996 yeah, I saw two little electric pumps, pumping coolant all the time in my 23'tesla mod3 rwd. I dont think it could cause the flow problem either. The only thing customer lost the warranty on that HV battery pack, if any thing related to over heat problem. But I doubt it would get over heat even on freeway driving with ambient air temp at 120*F. I am happy with that repair.
For the LOW PRICE.. It would be worth to get a small tap handle for this sort of thing. You have much more control. If the pipe tap wouldn't fit in the tap handle. The square could be ground smaller so it does.
I would love to see a video where someone puts a Long Range battery in a SR model 3 . I would like to swap out my SR battery for a Long Range if it wasnt too expensive ❤
This is how smart people solve problems. Dump peoples just put in a brand new part at any cost. Right to repair is very important and companies like Apple and Tesla are working against that. Still love both Apple and Tesla.
I wonder if tesla knew it was an easy fix, but suggested the inefficient 16k cost instead. And if Tesla has a committee that can be shown this. How low cost effective solutions like this are happening. I wonder what they'll say when shown this, will they STILL say just change the battery anyway even after seeing this easy inexpensive solution? Alot of videos like this about tesla are being watched everyday, increasing consumer awareness about cost charges.
Good job. I actually used to work for Tesla in the battery remanufacturing. What about fit and finish like panel gaps and misalignments? Do you guys work on those? Tesla quality sucks on those.
I'm also having trouble sizing the thread and insert. It seems like M14x1.5 or 9/16-18 would be a good size but finding a matching brass insert has proven difficult. Did they go with some more standard here? Maybe 3/4" NPT?

Still cheaper than a new battery from Tesla, but $700 for that job seems extremely expensive.
