Fernando Valenzuela broke camp in 1981 as the Dodgers No. 3 starter. But when Opening Day pitcher Jerry Reuss came down with a calf strain, manager Tommy Lasorda tapped the unheralded 20-year-old rookie to replace him. Valenzuela proceeded to throw a 4-hit shutout over the Houston Astros. It was not only the first win of an amazing 8-0 start for the pitcher - it was ground zero for Fernandomania.

I was 5 in 1981 when Fernandomania began. Lifetime Dodger fan since.
It changed the entire franchise, before the Dodgers were Hollywood, middle upper class fans, 'osea puros güeros' . Fernando brought back the Mexican and Chicano culture, he didn't mean to do it but he was at the right place at the right time. Sometimes the universe places us into special places just at the right time.
Even 40 years later, you look into those stands and look at the crowd and the majority are Mexican and Latino. I guess what I want to say is that some of us became Dodger fans because of Fernando. 40 years
That’s why I love my hometown LA so much. Always something amazing and special going on
Fernando is the prime example that you don’t need costly equipment or training to make it in the majors. All you need is to be given an OPPORTUNITY!
As long as you have the special skill and talent needed. Without skills like these opportunities won't be offered.
I was 28 in '81 and other than concerts, Dodger Stadium was where I found myself many times. Fernando was bigger than life and did as much for the organization as anyone you could name!
Love this LA Times series about Fernando 40.
These series episodes are great but should be longer
I wish Tommy could have been around for this 40th anniversary.
My question as a Dodgers fan why have they not retired his number yet
They say they only retire numbers if the player is in the hall of fame.
No player has chosen #34 since Fernando retired.
I know right?
Because its s lucky número
@@Samuelfish2kit's been an unwritten rule that nobody can wear his 34. But now it's officially retired!
Fernando came out like bull!🐂
That's why we call him el Toro🐃 Valenzuela!🥰
These videos need “close captioning”…
Other than that Fernando, my #2 favorite pitcher, (Burt Hooten was my favorite) gave me an incredible years as a 15 year old Dodgers fanatic.
Bill Dwyre said "The clippers were kind of laughed at!" Still relevant to this day! 🤣
The Clippers? They only moved to Los Angeles in 1984. Of course they were laughed at. A team suddenly shows up to play alongside the Dodgers and Lakers, who'd been there more than a quarter century and had seven titles in in that time between them, and puts up seven consecutive losing seasons (going 12-70 in 86-87).
Now #34 is retired in honor of Fernando Valenzuela!
