Thank you!!!! I’ve been battling cyano in my tank and could not figure out what was causing it. Picked up a phosphate test kit after watching this and yup super high. So relieved to finally have an answer.
I unplugged a powerhead when the screen fell off. I put replacing it off for a few days and then I noticed that the BG algae I had battled the last two years was disappearing. In less than two weeks it was totally gone. My plants have never looked better. I know that the absolutely the only change I made was unplugging the powerhead. I can't explain the why other than what I've said. Like a miracle. Plus the aquarium is quiet ,No sounds. Nice!
Phosphates is what causes it in my experience too. I also tried All The Things suggested by folks on the internet and nothing ever worked. I twigged onto phosphates when I read someone talking about how algae is not a light issue but a nutrient issue. Read what nutrients can trigger cyano and low and behold, phosphate. Annoyingly my tap water always has too much phosphate so something I've come to live with by minimising as much as possible and having heavy planted aquariums (or refugiums).
I've found that actually increasing/balancing fertilisers (and flow) in my tank has helped get rid of cyano, it takes a couple weeks (at least) but it's worked in 3 of my planted tanks, you can usually tell when it's dying off because it clumps together and turns almost black and has a "dry" look to it, at which point I usually siphon it out, although I have left it before and it has slowly disappeared...
I was starting to get more and more algae. Tested phosphate and it was 5+!! I bought a large tub of Rowaphos and put half in my canister filter. That was 2 weeks ago and reading is steady at zero
ugh that stuffs god awful! I think this evil might be creeping into one of our aquariums right now but im still in the denial phase ...so its not happening........but will refer back to this video if it happens, which it wont (denial)

Good advice. Thank you.
I moved my fish out and added scuds. The scuds ate every last bit of it !!!

Blue Exit has been my go to for any odd outbreaks of Blue Green algae. Has worked well for me every time
I love the purple on the puffer it sure pops 🤞crossed on the Cyanobacteria 👍👍
How do you keep phosphate levels low now? Did the Cyanobacteria come back?

@@tinheadtinhead6505 My test is actually out of date, and I did a fairly large WC recently so I wonder if it was actually much higher!
Is your siphon connected to a pump? I'm intrigued!! :)
Had no idea I had it you can really smell it when it starts very strong earthy swampy smell
Yep - unpleasant stuff all around!
Well, at least it's easy to vacuum :)

As its a pea puffer tank my remedy would never work ... I thru 20 odd young ramshorn snails at it and young guppies it was all gone within a day
Isnt Cyanobacteria actually red, mainly found in salt water tanks, or am i having a silly moment lol
Yes and freshwater green
It can be red or green (or blue), you can get it in any type of tank.
"Undiscriminately" - now you're just making $hite up
@@FlyingBystander yep, that was a low point from me. Sorry.
@@AquariumAdventures Just taking the Pi**. Can't help myself. Info in the video was grand. I probably should have lead with that
