    Terrific list of flicks! I've seen them all multiple times! Did you know that Steel Magnolias started out as an Off-Broadway play n NYC? It was playing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, on gay ole Christopher Street, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan in the late '80s. I went to see it with friends in 1987 and the theatre was packed with other gay guys (and of course, plenty of straights too.) The show was stunning! What an incredible surprise it was to hear they made it into a movie and with such an incredible cast! Thanks for this vid Pete! You know I love it more than my luggage! lol

    Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

    Great list but you are missing one essential: 1954's immortal A Star Is Born starring gay icon Judy Garland.

    This video is brilliant!! These films, to me, are like dear friends. I have a younger gay friend who has no idea of these films. Thanks to you, I can forward this list.

    I love this list. Some of my favorites are Delores Claiborne, Fried Green Tomatoes, First Wives Club, Female on the Beach. Death Becomes Her.

      @@PeterFitzgerald I agree with @australorp. Those mentioned are also some of my favorites, especially Delores Claiborne which is my #3 all time favorite! When I'm mad at the hubby, I like to pop in the DVD of that one and have it going. It always gets my point across! LOL Yes, please, please do a Part 2 and please include Burlesque in it. (Or maybe in the one you do of our favorite musicals.)

    These are also among my favorite movies. I’m surprised you didn’t include a Barbra Streisand movie - so many to choose from.

    • @PeterFitzgerald
      @PeterFitzgerald  3 года назад +1

      Streisand has done quite a few comedies (no musicals in this list on purpose) but none were at the top of the list as iconic gay movies.

    What would the arts (and especially cinema) be without the uncanny ability of gay men to immediately recognize style, charisma and talent when they see it. This marvelous list proves that point and thank you for it!. There are many forgotten icons but one that richly deserves re discovery is Jeanette MacDonald who made one of the sexiest and sophisticated films - "The Merry Widow" (directed by the incomparable Ernest Lubitsch) , and also one of the most lushly romantic films of all time "Maytime" - amongst others. Michael - South Africa

      Michael - I quite agree. Maytime is my favorite of the N/J films, and it was Jeanette's as well I hear. Thanks for your support. Cheers, Peter

    Now, Voyager is one of my all time favourites. Gay men were so drawn to it in the 1940s - and since - because Charlotte could be a repressed and closeted gay man who undergoes a sexual awakening and blossoms into her true self. As gay men had to hide in those days, she knows she cannot have everything, she doesn’t reach for the moon, she is satisfied to touch the stars.

    Female driven films you say. Depending on your definition, doesn't that technically also include Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, The Hunger Games saga, Johnny Depp's Alice series (lead by Mia Wasikowska for what that's worth), Bridesmaids? These are movies led by women who in some form or another find themselves throughout the course of their stories.

    • @PeterFitzgerald
      @PeterFitzgerald  Год назад

      Not sure, I know what your point is but I’m thrilled that this year we have a number of outstanding female performances in movies like everything everywhere all at once and tar. 👍🏼

    • @nickyoude2694
      @nickyoude2694 Год назад

      @@PeterFitzgerald My point was that while masculine traits are dominant in the movies, female centred narratives haven't exactly gone extinct. For example The Hunger Games series, ostensibly a sci-fi adventure franchise, is essentially a coming of age saga in sci-fi/fantasy trappings. Another example is that Crimson Peak is a gothic romance in slasher horror clothing.

      I appreciate your input. Though I understand it's one of your favorites, Johnny Guitar isn't even in the top 25 in terms of the pantheon of gay favorites. Sorry.

      It’s not really a chick flick, it’s really a Western.
