Since these are beginner's phrases, it might be handy to have the romanization for people who can't read Japanese yet: 1. Ohayō. Good morning. 2. Sumimasen. Excuse me 3. hai - yes. 4. iie - no. 5. Nan-sai desu ka? How old are you. 10. Dōzo. After you. 11. Wakarimashita. I understand. 12. Wakarimasen. I don't understand. 13. Eigo ga hanasemasu ka? Do you speak English? 14. Jya, mata. See you soon. 15. Domo. Thanks. 16. O-genki desu ka? How are you? 17. Gomen nasai. I'm sorry. 18. Konban wa. Good evening. 19. Konnichi wa. Hello. 20. Hajimemashite. Nice to meet you. 21. O-namae wa? What's your name? 22. Mizu, o-negai shimasu. Water, please. 23. Tasukete kudasai. Help! 24. Arigatō. Thank you. 25. Sayonara. Goodbye. I haven't studied Japanese in a long time, so this was a fun, simple video to watch. Thanks! Edit: corrected typo on "o-negai shimasu" :)
Thanks Risa! You actually teach things we need to know, unlike language teachers in school teaching you how to say 'I have three green fish and I like castles' instead of useful, commonly used words and phrases!
Ed Moritz When someone teaches you a useless sentence, take the useless part and replace it with something you want to remember. So take これはペンです "this is a pen" and make it これは日本語です(これはにほんごです) "this is Japanese" or even better これは俺の妹です(これはおれのいもうとです)"this is my little sister". I've done that since I started and I still do it now. It helps with Kanji as well if you keep writing the sentence over and over while repeating the words.

One Japanese guy told me once that you are not supposed to say just "Ohayou", cause that's rude. If you wanna keep it short, you can say just "gozaimasu" instead. Can anyone confirm?

I mainly want to learn Japanese because I love anime and I will be teaching English in Japan one day, and I would love to get to know the people there!
Right now I'm speaking my mother tongue Croatian, am fluent in German and English and am starting to learn Japanese because this language seems realy usefull and interesting , given how many tourists come from Japan you should be able to at the very least say hi and all over the far east
you do realise she showed almost no humor during this, yah? wait.. i get it. you're one of those racist asshats who have a fetish for asian girls, right?
Waffle Cones Racist???? My friend. Let me tell you something: Ignorance is not a blessing. My father IS Japanese and I LIVE in JAPAN. So, are you crazy or what?
Risa saved my life.... Thanks I learned hiragana now iam going to learn katakana it's more difficult than you think but risa made it easier for us thanks keep it up
I love your videos but I wish you guys would slow down the words a little. Take #6 for instance. It's said so fast that it almost sounds like one long word smushed together. It's very difficult to make out the syllables. Other than that, thank you very much for making these. They are very helpful.
I LOVE THIS!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Although I think it'd be a plus if you also added the romanji pronounciation cuz now I have to listen to each phrase a couple of times until I fully get the pronounciation xD Arigatou gozaimasu!^^
***** for someone who is just going to japan for holidays, they don't really have the time to learn all the kanji, hiragana, katakana. I think this video was mostly meant for people who want to know just a few phrases for small-talk. Nobody expects to find romanji pretty much ANYWHERE in japan. The purpose of romanji is mainly to help with the pronounciation and you also need it while learning kanji.
***** Totally agree! That's exactly what I just wrote, romaji make things easier for us non-japanese speakers to improve our pronunciation and get to know the phonetics of the words and phrases Hope they add romaji to future videos too!
Romanji would definitely make it easier to be able to better pronounce the word, but learning the some of the different writing styles of Japanese would be good I bet they have a book with the romanji version of a word and the other forms too, to help with the signs in Japan. Also hi Keiko bet you can't guess who I am lol
I know lol Just saying for me I learn the alphabet first for a language and that helps me with pronounciation but with japanese you will usually have symbols and not letters ya know :)
Hi Japanesepod! I just wanted to say thankyou so much for making these videos! For 6months I studied as hard as I could for my trip to Japan and was able to get around easily with everything I learned from watching these videos. Risa of course is my absolute favorite ^^ Although I still have so much to learn, it really did help me get around and persuaded me to keep studying. ♡♡♡
I love speaking different languages cuz I want to be a linguist but its annoying cuz I'm in year 8 at school so I speak japanese at school randomly and ppl think I'm trying to be racist which is annoying cuz I want to go to Japan when I'm older so it's better to learn the language sooner than later
xox clarissa xox Hahaha it might happen at times! Me too I sometimes speak random Japanese in the middle of a sentence. But yes..it's better to learn Japanese now than later.
Dude I don't understand one thing about Japanese people. I downloaded an app called wetalk. And I try to talk with Japanese people who can understand English so I can learn Japanese. Yes I do learn from Duolingo and Japanese pod 101 but for understanding Japanese better. But nobody replied. Like Americans, Brazilians, Africans, Russians and almost all have replied when they know I am trying to know their culture. But Japanese People never replied. Are they shy or Racist because I am an Indian? But really need a guy who knows Japanese well.
Just like "Thongs" in Aussie means "flip flops" and "Thongs" in America is "G-strings" and "rooting" is plumbing, but in Australia "rooting" means "making love"... this world is SO WEIRD!!!! We do say "flip flops" every now n then... but... "Thongs" are our most used word for "flip flops" in Australia... The White here call shoes "Joggers" or "sand-shoes" or just "shoes"... the Aboriginals (the Natives and my people), we all call them "Jinna Boogers" because Jinna means Foot in my Tribe's language... and the shoes look like Boogers so we call them "Jinna Boogers" :) I only know one or two words in my own language... I was never brought up with my dad or in my community to know or learn my language... my mum could probably teach me... but she's been away from the community for a long time... glad she knows some sites, though :) I'm not just Aboriginal, though :) I'm also part Japanese (through dad), British (through mum), Irish (mum), Scottish (dad), Danish and (possibly New Zealand, but not so sure) Romanian (mum's side)... I also got Gypsy blood :)
Victoria Mae-Anne Wolfe you have blood from all the races I see 😂 ;) I am just greek and australian because my dad was born there but his parents are also greek and they left from Australia when he was 6 years old.... so I don't consider myself "Australian" 😂 But who knows... no one knows all his/her ancestors birthplaces and their race... Too many years have passed, so everyone has blood from too many people with different races... with this way it's managed the human evolution... with the mix of too many DNAs👌 -sorry, I just like biology 😂-
i never 分かりません knew sayonara was taken from japanese! i always thought it was italian or spanish or french like au revoir what other words do we use in america that came from japan? edit: Tsunami and Tycoon are also japanese
The most surprising thing is how long an equivalent Japanese word is. Help is four letter in English, and it's like 15 letters long in Japanese lol. If you were kidnapped you would be dead before you could get the full word out.
It seems like it but it's only for some things. For example, to tell someone, "I had so much fun!" in Japanese is only "Tanoshikatta." 5 words in English, 1 in Japanese. Or let's say you were texting someone but didn't write back because you fell asleep, in English you would say, "Oops, sorry I fell asleep." in Japanese just "Nechatta." **The more you know!**
+TheGoldenSaber you will not if you learn kanji . for example " love " is 1 letter 愛 or " japanese language " is 3 letters 日本語 , so if you learn kanji it will be more effective than ABC's .
+TheGoldenSaber Well, technically, depending on the severity of the situation, you can just say "Tasukete!" or "Tasuke!" The one she showed is more like, requesting assistance.
This is very helpful, my family is Japanese... however I don’t know very much. My mom and grandma are fluent though. I am going to japan in 2 months so hopefully this comes in handy!
FKDLSJFK I'VE BEEN SELF LEARNING JAPANESE FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS OR SO AND I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS VIDEO ONE TIME IN THE VERY BEGINNING AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT ANY OF IT MEANT AND NOW FLASH FORWARD AND I UNDERSTOOD LITERALLY EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR #23 OMG IM SO HAPPY OF MY PROGRESS
Those parts can be fast at first but just keep listening, and pause and replay when you need to. Also, if you sound out the individual words she's saying, you'll start to hear and understand easier and faster. If you're not sure what a word means, just pause and look it up. Keep notes on what words mean what and you'll have a huge vocabulary before you know it.
+Bender Rodriguez Just start to learn it. In my opinion it is generally hard, but there are plenty of resources on the internet to start learning it on your own. Start learning Kana, read some grammar guides and start learning your first Kanji then. It is going to take a while, but especially when watching anime, you can see the progress you have made.
Same reason xD Well, if anyone here is trying to find where to learn Japanese on the internet, I recommend you to learn Hiragana and Katakana on *Memrise* (There's an app and a website :D At first learning Hiragana may be leik mehhh but after a while it ok. You will start really understanding Hiragana and Katakana while learning Kanji and grammar xD Katakana is really easy, you can learn it within a week or even a day.) And after that, you can continue to Kanji and Grammar, which I recommend learning *together*. Learning just Kanji is hard (I couldn't do it) The same with grammar. For Kanji and grammar you can use *FluentU* (an app and a website again ! :D You need to know Hiragana for it.)
@K. Gray @Trin Heiffer They don't have all of the words in the subtitles. She just said several sentences real quick, & none of them were in the subtitles. She needs to have each word or sentence written "phonetically". They have phonetics on the "learn Korean" part of this site. The guy teaching is great with phonetics on that site.
While I might not be perfect with my hiragana, learn it, because it made this video a lot more easy to follow. Whether that is through memrise or Human Japanese, hiragana really helps especially with beginner words. Most of the time I could understand the subtitles (and the difficult kanji is notated on top with hiragana). Learning Hiragana makes life so much more easy, there are about 50 different characters and basic words such as "oyasumi" and "arigato" are pretty much hiragana.
+karoox +Leila Moussa Actually it can't be both. を is in romaji wo, but can also be pronounced as o. That does not mean you can use を or お in the same situations. Some easy example of the を usage: - 私はりんごを食べます, the english translation would be: I eat an apple. を is used here to put an "action" on the object (which is apple here). This is an more complex sentence: - あなたは本の生活をありますか, the english translation would be: Do you have a book of life? Note: I am not a japanese expert (yet), but this is how I interpreted it.
In the manner of being "somewhat understood" on Japanese, but that is different than understanding it fluently. It takes a while and even learning basic words you still may have trouble with a conversation.
Should have included "Otsakre sama-desu", one of the most important words meaning bye and thank you for your hard work, is acceptable for greeting as well
+Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101.com Thank you! I'm nowhere near your gracefulness with the language, but I am enjoying learning. Thank you for sharing the education! My kids will love it!
Awesome video. It's kinda hard to know how to pronounce perfectly without the phrase in non-japanese characters. But explaining the context of each phrase is awesome! 😉👍

Congrats Risa-san, you got a new SUBSCRIBER
I sound like a siren drowned in water when i speak japanese.
Is this meme even alive? XD
I mainly want to learn Japanese because I love anime and I will be teaching English in Japan one day, and I would love to get to know the people there!
Such a beautiful language.
+Jens Wilke We definitely agree!
Team JapanesePod101
Right now I'm speaking my mother tongue Croatian, am fluent in German and English and am starting to learn Japanese because this language seems realy usefull and interesting , given how many tourists come from Japan you should be able to at the very least say hi and all over the far east
This Japanese is so cute and funny!!! I'm in love!!!! :-)
:) me too
haha... true
450k subscriber in love with her also :)
you do realise she showed almost no humor during this, yah?
wait.. i get it. you're one of those racist asshats who have a fetish for asian girls, right?
Waffle Cones Racist???? My friend. Let me tell you something: Ignorance is not a blessing. My father IS Japanese and I LIVE in JAPAN. So, are you crazy or what?
You're videos are very useful. It makes learning japanese fun so thank you for that.
You’re Welcome :)
Are you feeling well today?
Me: Uh Uuh Uh Uhhh uh
Eng translation: yes no yes yes noo casually
They just dont want to do everything so they just making things up now 😄😄
Risa saved my life....
I agree with the slowing down. I Am very thankful for the videos. I plan on watching them over and over until i get it right!
Learn the hiragana.
If she says it slowly its unnatural then youll speak slowed down also.
Thanks Risa , that was fun ! Thank you for displaying the kana and kanji , it really helps with my pronunciation. More please :)
You can find more videos like this at https:/www.JapanesePod101.com :)
I LOVE THIS!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Although I think it'd be a plus if you also added the romanji pronounciation cuz now I have to listen to each phrase a couple of times until I fully get the pronounciation xD
Arigatou gozaimasu!^^
Oh whatever lol yea but for english speakers we need to see the letters and not symbols
Risa of course is my absolute favorite ^^
Although I still have so much to learn, it really did help me get around and persuaded me to keep studying.
♡♡♡
My biggest fear
Ha sometimes pronounce like wa
Ha pronounce like wa only if it's particle like watashiwa. If it's not a particle, it pronounces ha.
Thank you very much for uploading,,this is little bit easy to learn rather than korean.

あ、ちおこれっと ありがとうございます!
thanks for fonetic in the subtitles! it helps to learn how to say the words in new language that you want to learn!
I love speaking different languages cuz I want to be a linguist but its annoying cuz I'm in year 8 at school so I speak japanese at school randomly and ppl think I'm trying to be racist which is annoying cuz I want to go to Japan when I'm older so it's better to learn the language sooner than later
why are you here then?
xox clarissa xox Hahaha it might happen at times! Me too I sometimes speak random Japanese in the middle of a sentence. But yes..it's better to learn Japanese now than later.
I do the same thing but with Hebrew
xox clarissa xox
Same with me dude. I want to move to Japan when I'm older.
But really need a guy who knows Japanese well.
sayonara (σαγιονάρα) in greek means flip flop
Weird...
The White here call shoes "Joggers" or "sand-shoes" or just "shoes"... the Aboriginals (the Natives and my people), we all call them "Jinna Boogers" because Jinna means Foot in my Tribe's language... and the shoes look like Boogers so we call them "Jinna Boogers" :)
I only know one or two words in my own language... I was never brought up with my dad or in my community to know or learn my language... my mum could probably teach me... but she's been away from the community for a long time... glad she knows some sites, though :)
I'm not just Aboriginal, though :) I'm also part Japanese (through dad), British (through mum), Irish (mum), Scottish (dad), Danish and (possibly New Zealand, but not so sure) Romanian (mum's side)...
Too many years have passed, so everyone has blood from too many people with different races... with this way it's managed the human evolution... with the mix of too many DNAs👌 -sorry, I just like biology 😂-
i never 分かりません knew sayonara was taken from japanese!
i always thought it was italian or spanish or french like au revoir
what other words do we use in america that came from japan?
edit: Tsunami and Tycoon are also japanese
Νåʐɛк ŧɧɛ Dåʀк Łøʀɖ όταν είσαι Έλληνας
Japanese is such a cute language, felt like learning a bit.
You speak so clearly! It was easy to follow even when I wasn’t watching the screen! Thank you so much!
I've watched a lot of anime and I just know all the phrases in this video!
And I'm learning Japanese to watch anime without subtitles duh
sameeeee
Man that's awesome
Same :)
But I didn't know all of the phrases
I watch anime all the time and learn nothing
I'm starting to watch animé at the same time I'm starting to study Japanese
I love Japanese language and Japan bc I'm a huge fan of there animes ❤️❤️
😈
Same😈😈
The most surprising thing is how long an equivalent Japanese word is. Help is four letter in English, and it's like 15 letters long in Japanese lol. If you were kidnapped you would be dead before you could get the full word out.
Japanese people can speak pretty fast so I think it would be pretty equal
It seems like it but it's only for some things. For example, to tell someone, "I had so much fun!" in Japanese is only "Tanoshikatta." 5 words in English, 1 in Japanese. Or let's say you were texting someone but didn't write back because you fell asleep, in English you would say, "Oops, sorry I fell asleep." in Japanese just "Nechatta." **The more you know!**
***** Lol you got me there!
I'm learning Japanese in my spare time and this really help. ありがと。
I’m a Chinese, but I am watching such a Japanese teaching video in English.
WANNA HAVE SOME BATS
This is very helpful, my family is Japanese... however I don’t know very much. My mom and grandma are fluent though. I am going to japan in 2 months so hopefully this comes in handy!
Today I learn that the word for "yes" is un. The word for no is "un".
This language man, lmao. The Polish casual word for "yes" is "no".
VOX3L only thing I learned is cookies from anime an good morning from this that's for today
VOX3L And Polish is one of the hardest to learn languages! IKR. "Tak" or "Nie.
The no is usually said like longer. Like : U~n
VOX3L its un and uun
VOX3L I really wanna know the origin of your profile picture..
Risa stunning class
Excellent video. You must do more videos like this. Simples and easy to understand.
You can find more videos like this at www.JapanesePod101.com
This is really helpful, but It'd be nice if you'd write it down in romaji aswell
Very helpful!!!❤️

When she had a conversation with herself, I thought "Too fast too fast! Nope! How am I going to learn another language...."
It would be amazing to learn japanese, specially because each time i Watch anime i would not need to put the English subtitle :P
+Bender Rodriguez Just start to learn it. In my opinion it is generally hard, but there are plenty of resources on the internet to start learning it on your own. Start learning Kana, read some grammar guides and start learning your first Kanji then. It is going to take a while, but especially when watching anime, you can see the progress you have made.
same reason why I want to learn Japanese :)
+Bender Rodriguez Same reason why I started learning Japanese. Five years later, BAM! I'm still using English subtitles.
Same reason xD
Well, if anyone here is trying to find where to learn Japanese on the internet,
I recommend you to learn Hiragana and Katakana on *Memrise* (There's an app and a website :D At first learning Hiragana may be leik mehhh but after a while it ok. You will start really understanding Hiragana and Katakana while learning Kanji and grammar xD Katakana is really easy, you can learn it within a week or even a day.)
And after that, you can continue to Kanji and Grammar, which I recommend learning *together*. Learning just Kanji is hard (I couldn't do it)
The same with grammar.
For Kanji and grammar you can use *FluentU* (an app and a website again ! :D You need to know Hiragana for it.)
+Handsome Pickle thanks for the tip!!! i already tried fluentU for a week now but it's really hard.Memrise i guess suits my level best. :-)
Her japanese is exceptional.
TRUE YES
IMS IMS 7ARE AND I HAVE A CITY OF ABOUT 3A IN MY CLASS
thank you. You are entertaining, informative, and also very cute
I like how you teach :)

Breakdown the pronunciation of the words slower
Easy-to-read pronunciation is in the subtitles
@K. Gray @Trin Heiffer
They don't have all of the words in the subtitles. She just said several sentences real quick, & none of them were in the subtitles. She needs to have each word or sentence written "phonetically". They have phonetics on the "learn Korean" part of this site. The guy teaching is great with phonetics on that site.
We need romaji or something
While I might not be perfect with my hiragana, learn it, because it made this video a lot more easy to follow. Whether that is through memrise or Human Japanese, hiragana really helps especially with beginner words. Most of the time I could understand the subtitles (and the difficult kanji is notated on top with hiragana).
Learning Hiragana makes life so much more easy, there are about 50 different characters and basic words such as "oyasumi" and "arigato" are pretty much hiragana.
I think that hiragana and romaji also kanji is easy but when I do year 10 katakana it looks pretty difficult
When ur learning Korean but u end up here lol 😂
Same but I’m also learning Chinese (mandarin) and Vietnamese
korean and japanese are really similar
Banzai
@@kirbylover8783 except the alphabet
@Shah Bhuiyan they have a similar sentence order
Thanks very much. I am learning Japanese and I am from India.😇😇😇
I'm going to go to japan, so I'm trying to learn a bit of japanese ❤️
aww she's pretty and cute, and this helps a lot, thnx!
by the way, what does "wo" mean?
+Leila Moussa Hello,
Thank you for posting.
''wo'' is a particle.
Keep studying Japanese with JapanesePod101
Regards,
Team JapanesePod101.com
***** wait but isn't that "o"?
***** oh really? well thank you! ^_^
+karoox +Leila Moussa Actually it can't be both. を is in romaji wo, but can also be pronounced as o. That does not mean you can use を or お in the same situations. Some easy example of the を usage:
- 私はりんごを食べます, the english translation would be: I eat an apple.
を is used here to put an "action" on the object (which is apple here).
This is an more complex sentence:
- あなたは本の生活をありますか, the english translation would be: Do you have a book of life?
Note: I am not a japanese expert (yet), but this is how I interpreted it.
Napokue thanks ^_^
I have a friend that live in "good morning" in japanese
Ohio lol
What?
Me.
where is good morning?
i wanna live there too
It will forever be a mystery!
This was the cutest thing I’ve seen and it makes me miss Okinawa
Do you understand Japanese ?
No I don't
You just talked Japanese 😂😂😂😂😂
In the manner of being "somewhat understood" on Japanese, but that is different than understanding it fluently. It takes a while and even learning basic words you still may have trouble with a conversation.

お疲れ様(おつかれさま) otsukaresama
Best teacher!! Examples included 😱😱😳
OK
i feel that it's ironic to ask for directions in japanese when you're not going to be able to understand them anyway
Jovan Tan yuka teach you good
They can still point at locations or draw a little map, better than not even being able to say what you need. They might not understand english
i know english and spanish fluently and know the first 33 digits of pi yet i can barely remember japanese phrases

Most everyone is inspired to learn Japanese due to Anime but I want to due to liking Visual Kei bands haha. I think learning song lyrics helps a lot!
You have made this lesson so interesting by being more jovial and casual as you say. thanks

She is so cute. Thanks so much for this lesson :)
