It was because Nagisa threw the last of his bloodlust away with his knife (his speciality) and decided to beat Karma at his own game, so if Karma had stabbed him then he still would have lost by losing the respect his classmates have for him by doing it like that.

I- ummm... I think that right there in that fight they were going all-out, and the result of that was Nagisa, but then again, if Karma ended up stabbing him - which would have happened in real life - he would have won. But then again, again, they weren't exactly trying to 'kill' each other, but rather make them 'surrender' so they had different goals in mind rather than actually tying to assassinate the other... So er... (Ugh,my brain hurts) ... I dunno. :\

Actually, Nagisa only won because Karma surrendered when he saw how much Koro-sensei meant to Nagisa and he didn't want to kill the octopus. Let's face it: if Karma wanted to win, he would have done it. Nagisa may be the natural-born assassin, but Karma is far superior in terms of strength.
no tattoo no life Actually, Nagisa could have won very easily. Before this scene, Nagisa was about to shot Karma, but he challenged him to a hand to hand duel. Knowing that shooting there would not be seen as a true victory, he accepted. Then, in the final moments, Nagisa tricks Karma, making him think he will use an assassin technique, but instead chokes him, making for him almost impossible to breath (as he says, he was about to pass away). While that, Karma finds that his knife is at his reach, but decides not to win, since Nagisa could have poked with his knife but didn't, had agreed to duel when he could have won easily, bested him at his speciality (close combat) and Karma didn't want to win due to pure luck.
