  • I charge the Honda E from 0 (well maybe 1%) to 50% to give a real world example of something you might actually do if you get caught short...this will give you an idea of how long you can expect to put aside to watch your favourite film / tv series whilst waiting.

    I don't get the charging infrastructure in the UK, it's like anyone and their aunt can set up a charging point and then use the most convoluted method of charging for the power, bitcoins, pesetas, casino chips, travellers cheques, but not the most obvious one, the credit card.

      Back in the day (afaik) the operators got grants from the Government to pay for chargers and electricity which meant that free charging was common (well, if you could find a working charger), but in return the operators had to give the government data as to who was using the network and how much electricity each customer used. The easiest way was an RFID card, especially as the 3g or 2g network coverage in the charging units wasn’t always reliable.

      Completely agree. The third party network is still awful. About half of those I’ve tried have not been working. And those that are sometimes require an app and that you load money into it in advance. Completely ridiculous. Should be able to turn up, plug in a d swipe your debit card. I’ve found instavolt to be the best network in terms of ease of use and reliability.

      @@chrisabbott683 yer i agree we need the charging networks to standardise one app for all or like we all say they should all rapids take debit cards at no extra charge looking at you polar ! Yer instavolt are a joy to use ! When they in all over U.K. like polar think it worth the extra cost to have peace of mind of multiple units and easy to use with card!

      @@nickieredshaw7835 chatted with polar Monday as was using their system (Its now changed to BP Pulse), they are doing some big changes, the app is actually solid and gives live status of the charger - and costs - which is something....but the hardware is behind so doesnt solve the actual real life problem of getting a charge immediately on arrival and had to spend 30 mins faffing about! (when that would have been enough to continue the journey had it been on charge)

    That charging speed is consistent with 20% to 80% SOC in 30 minutes, since 0% to 20% is generally slow, because of battery limitations. Thanks for the video, Ian.

    I'm not sure how it will pan out in future....but the scenario you showed, question is, would you like your missus sat on her own in a deserted car park at night with no-one around waiting for the car to charge? These are the things that i think need to be looked at, it would be a much safer/better idea to have e chargers at well lit garages where there are constantly people around and cctv etc. Just a thought

    It looks like you have the car set to ‘Auto-on’ like a Tesla, so no need to press the ‘Engine start’ button, is that right? Was that setting default, when you picked the car up or did you change it? I’ve still got to wait 2.5 moths for my Honda e. Kinda excited !

      Yes its setup like this as standard, as soon as you bum hits the seat (using the seat sensor) it boots up.....lush!

      @@IanSampsonRLO i can’t understand why EV manufacturers keep having a start/stop button. Or the need to turn off the car to charge. Why can’t it deal with that when you plug in without you having to do it?

      @@SirHackaL0t. so never need to press it in the Honda E, it just turns on (OR you can set that to off in the settings so you then must press it to turn it on). In the Zoe you have to press it. But in those neither need to be pressed to allow it to charge. Plugging the car in will turn it off (or kick it into standby as it were - with a message saying you cant drive because its plugged in).

      @@IanSampsonRLO One thing I’ve noticed whilst upgrading the firmware in my Tesla is the message to say the car can’t be driven or charged during the upgrade process but then tells you to not drive the car. Lol.

    Somewhat disappointing it took that long to 50%. Still it will hopefully be quicker in future rapid tests, it must be better than that surely. Instavolts are pretty consistent at giving good rates. Look forward to the next video, Lands End to John O Grouts isn't it?

    Hi Ian
    does the honda e come with just one charging cable, wall socket 3 pin which would be a slow charge type 1?
    So if you want to charge at 7.7kw, type 2 you would need to buy a cable?
    I am guessing ALL rapid charge, 50kw have their own cables there, so never need to buy a cable for those?
    I am looking at getting one and am confused on the cables, extra confused as I will be between france and spain and seems they maybe have different connections haha...

      I know this is an old comment and you've probably worked it out but type 1 and type 2 refer to connectors (type 1 used in US, type 2 in UK and Europe). I think the power levels are called "modes". Mode 1 being low power charging for e.g. an ebike. EVs use mode 2 (charging from a domestic socket with a control box), mode 3 (7kw wall charge point) and mode 4 (DC charging).

    Did you notice the Lidi charger shows 22kw on the actual charger screen in your video , but the app shows it as a AC 43 Kw charger.

      @@IanSampsonRLO It will peak at 56 kW. And on Ac it is also rather slow with 6.6 kW.

    The 30kW charging rate is similar to a 2012 iMiev - is the charge rate being limited by the cold weather or the Lidl charger's maximum amps ?

    I bet the battery was cold, thats why it charged so slow. But according to the test by Bjørn Nyland the Honda throttles to 30kw at 42%, even with a warm battery. The Honda is a cute litte city runaround, it's simply not made for long trips.     That does seem slow for 0-50% with a small battery at a rapid charger. I’m used to going from 10-80% (about 160 miles added) in 20-25 mins on the tesla network.

      Yeah looking forward to finding a charger that gives guaranteed 150kw (like the new Gridserve ones) and trying it out.

    Cost of running it please, 50% charge but how much. It's interesting for those of us who have conventional cars to see the difference in running costs. Also how easy and reliable the chargers are to use, at the moment it all seems to be a complete nightmare

      Running in terms of fuel = for every 100 miles its around £2.50-£3.00 (when charging at home..which is where I do 99% of my charging)

    Why 50% when in reality for most people on a longer journey it would be 80%. Or have you got that planned.

      Because there is this video of 0-50% (which in this real life usage is actually miles more than I needed to get me home - 80% would have been huge over kill and meant me sat there longer and cost twice as much - I just needed 10miles to get me home and then charge off peak for £0.08 p/kw instead of £0.27 p/kw). At some point we will do a 50% to 100% as and when a real life need arises.

    ou tof interest how much was the charge. i thought podpoint did 15 mins then would disconnect if not confirmed?

      I think the 15 minutes charge without confirming only applies to the free pod-point chargers (mostly type 2 chargers, not rapid).

    At 3:00 your dash is showing 2.6 mile per kWh. That is not very good, even for winter.

      Never been reset, probably should, its been ragged around for 2680 miles prior to me getting it....and then I have ragged it around ha ha

    So 14kWh in 28 minutes is about 30kW charging rate? Not the best considering you were on a 50kWh charger. And all that for 40 miles of range?
    Makes you wonder what Honda were thinking when they decided that was good enough.

      From this I certainly wouldnt draw the conclusion this has something to do with the Honda, its much more likely to be to do with the charger. I have hardly ever received the full 50kw before (in the 4 years owning th 24kwh leaf) and never really reached the 43kw on the Zoe irrelevant of how low the battery is....mainly due to the charger not giving out the required amount.
      The only real way to test is to take 3 cars up there, all close to 'empty' and trying them out 1 by 1 (allowing the charger to cool inbetween just in case of thermal control resrtictions on the charger iteself).
      The Honda can take up to 100kw, so would lead me to believe its unlikely to be the car itself, rather the charger and the power it in reality was giving out at the time.

      @@IanSampsonRLO I'd say the battery is too cold to accept a higher rate of charge. Does the Honda have a preconditioning function?

      @@IanSampsonRLO Unfortunately, even though you can plug into a 100 kW charger, 56 kW is the maximum charge the e will take.

      In 2 c December day so as cold if not colder we got 30.5 kWh in 45 mins in Zoe ze50 that’s about 40 kWh average it’s not great but for cold it’s ok and and had mid 40 s in summer, it’s was good enough for 120 ish motorway miles at 70 mph with heating on etc in that temperature was Ok and more if on slower a roads or at higher temperature, you need Efficiency and fast charging speed it’s like the 208e can charge at twice the speed of the Zoe but to charge to same kWh it’s only few minutes faster but the Zoe can go further on that kWh added so it’s not all it cracked up to be fast charging on normal size battery’s as if you charge quick it’s an aggressive charging curve as a slower charging car can have flatter one .

      @@nickieredshaw7835 This is one of the reasons I chose a Tesla model 3 LR. The size of the battery means it’s rare that I can’t just go where I want without worrying about getting there.
      I did a road trip to Norway in August covering almost 3,000 miles in 10 days there and back. Not sure I’d be happy in some of the EVs available to do that. :)
      The Honda E looks cute but that’s not a good enough reason for me to consider getting one unfortunately considering the size of the battery.
      I’m interested in how your longer journeys go when you start touring the country. Let me know when you are planning to venture to the dealer in Eastbourne. It would be great to meet up and see the car in the flesh.

    The Honda e is a odd car it doesn't seem to do anything really well .
    My first ev was a ioniq with a 28kwh battery which did alot of things really well that was almost 3 years ago .

      It does a LOT well. Let down in some areas, but massively better (aside from range) than my Zoe or Leaf. More to come as videos and journeys unfold

    Definitely not one for long journeys then. Not charging massively faster than the 22kw charger on my Zoe did.

      Charges up to 100kw - charger dependent of course. Will soon find out if its car or charger thats restricting the rate over the next 47,000 miles 😀

      @@IanSampsonRLO You could try the yoyo method to warm the battery up before rapid charging. Floor it, then regen back down and repeat a few times. It should help warm it up a bit.

    How long for the Zoe to 50% ?

      It will be around about the same (IF it was all equal..of course its not though as my Zoe is a 41kwh so bigger battery). But max it can take is 41kw, wheras charger dependent the Honda allegedly takes up to 100kw (which would mean massively faster charging on the Honda if supported by the charger).

      In 2c in December so as cold or colder in Zoe ze50 we got 30.5 kWh in 45 mins and that was good for about 120 motorway miles at 70 mph with heating on etc would be more at lower speed a roads etc . So not great but 40 ish average kWh in the cold that’s ok for cold had mid 40 in summer would be nice to have 100 kw support but it’s been good enough for 1050 miles in 4 days and 420 miles in one day and did 5000 miles in under 2 months! Now even with COVID we done nearly 8700 miles in 6 months. So you need Efficiency as well as quick charging speed ,like 208 e can charge twice the speed as Zoe but to same kWh it’s only 4-5 mins faster but Zoe can go lot further on the same kWh so you got to have both.

      On this charger yes at this time and in that temp. Car itself apparently capable of up to 100kw charging (charger dependent)

      @@IanSampsonRLO No. Honda claimed 100kw fast charge speed but in all the tests I have seen even on 150kw charge posts, show that it typically pulls 30-45kw or thereabouts! Pathetic in 2020. Another false claim from Honda to go with the poor efficiency and range. I understand small battery capacities but price the car accordingly. This car should be sub £20k. It is 2010 year range, efficiency & charge rates released in 2020/21. Great design. Poor execution.

      On this charger it was free. Their tariff is usually £0.27 p/kw for non subscribed customers.
      At home (where all my charging usually is), I charge off peak for around £0.08 p/kw

      Being a newbie & not getting my first EV til end of January I don't understand why you need to use a mobile phone to start a charge with these type of chargers!!! The whole system seems to be a complicated mess of RFID, Apps, need to open accounts with some of the suppliers, contactless card payments!!! , Luckily I should be OK just charging up at home and be able to give that nonsense a miss.

      @@lancpudn yer for most charging stations it’s a car full of cards and phone full of apps 😭 unless you got a Tesla or go to instantvolt or gold plated lonty but soon companies are bringing contactless support to new charges but it’s still not enough , it’s want to stop and all rapids should take cards at no extra charge!

      @@nickieredshaw7835 Yes you're right the day cant come soon enough & I've not even started my EV journey yet. Every man & his dog knew this day was coming with the transition to EV's how on earth has the payment methods got in such a state? The people I talk to who are thinking about getting an EV's this is one the things that irks them the most, not the range anxiety.

      I have a mobile phone....somewhere, I cant remember the last time I saw it!!! I really don't want to mess with those infernal things to charge up an EV. I can see much head scratching & cursing when I get my EV.
      I should really thank Ian for doing these video's though , I've followed him since his Nissan Leaf days & it was him & fully charged show that got me into BEV's So thank you Ian if you read this.

      @@lancpudn yer this is our first ev been looking and waiting for last 8-9 years! Over last 8600 miles only had range anxiety twice but charging anxiety lots ! Is it working is it in use and have I got right app card etc and were the heck is it the last one a lot especially in Scotland! it’s nearly worth getting a Tesla just to not have to worry about these things, if you can afford it ,we would if we could.
