A (potentially obvious) note of caution here: Have back up copies of any files you edit. ENJOY!
Sadly this does not work on linux. Feral redid EVERYTHING but kept all bugs nicely preserved. Yay. I can't even find the desc files. Certainly aren't any tools or anything.
hi i want to add more settlements and regions on the campaign map. can you help me how to do this if is possible? thanks a lot
@@andreasthanopoulos7918
You would essentialy have to make an entire mod.
Could you not just add the one semi colan? isn't the way you wrote the new code removing all penalties for razing cities as well?
@@spenceremerson5044 you can't raze in med2
I have been always ok with M2TW diplomacy. I have two reliable allies that never betray me. They are my army and fleet.
Pahaha. That all depends on just how loyal your men are of course! ;)
Ok, Alexander III, what about your troops deserting?
_Rome 2 has entered the chat._
Spam assasins and murder as many characters as you can and you will see your dread and authority climb. Your armies and cities will be unlikely to rebel.
@Quant Regio: What difficulty?
The way to correct the bug is to conquer everyone using cheesy tactics
Corner fight the whole game. Sorted. That or Timurid Elephants.
Blitz with Holy Roman Empire, won vh/vh even before the Mongols arrive lol.
I just send diplomat and spam them with gift of promising to attack rebels until we have perfect relations. Then they attack me anyway. BUt I'm prepared for that. Defensive war it is.
Thanks for that.
I got to look more into that file and those semi colons then, maybe some lost cut-content in there XD
There are a few lines cut out in there. Go wild 🤣
Obviously slaves are designed to be at a completely negative relationship every turn, but they cut out the relationship update screen as they probably noticed that every turn you'd be updated that you hate the rebels 😅 There's some other odd stuff about diplomatic insults and attacking Othordox on crusades. Worth a dig into methinks.
MELKOR YOU’RE HERE

Three. Semicolons. All this friggen time!!!
I wish I'd discovered this video so, so much earlier. IDK how long it took you to discover this, but thank you SO much.
OMG!! I had no Idea this was a bug and that I can fix it. Thanks so much for this. Liked and Subscribed!!
Glad I could help. Hope you like the other stuff on the channel.
There is a trigger referred to as 'BandTogethor' which allows for smaller factions to increase relation.
When in combination with 'Tall_Poppy', used to automate hatred to large factions, Med2 might look comparable to a paradox title in aggressive expansion.
That's such a silly little bug! Thank you very much.
You're welcome!
In my latest Scotland campaign i pushed angles s of isles by turn 12, only occupied cities and ransomed troops, next turn i signed peace with them and started peacefully expanding into rebel towns, 10 turns later i am at war with France, England, HRE, Portugal and Denmark keeps landing troops near Nottingham and loading them back, but wouldn't attack, all of this wars were declared in span of 2 turns and i had 2 cities sieged by 0.5-0.6 stacks whole the garrison was like 1 squad and almost full stack sitting on doorstep of London
As England I had alliance with Scotland, Denmark, France Germany, Spain and Portugal. Just in case so I could expand on rebel cities. I attacked Scotland before so they don't grow strong but pope dude warned me of the curse. 20 turns later Scotland attacked me... And Germany in the same turn. Two turns later France also attacked me, so I destroyed Scotland, kicked France ass and scared Germany, now i'm in peace with them :D
if by some legendary feat of cheese you managed to fight all that off, then finally get ready to take one measly town the pope would give you a cease hostilities, you'd back off into an enemy ambush and get excommunicated for not surrenduring
Great stuff - helpful as always!
Glad to help!
Julianus Vatinius, is that you?
Ive never really cared what other factions think of me. But if the pope has a poor opinion trouble can occur. To cure that just send a diplomat to rome and ply them with cash every now and then. Bingo, your reputation remains high
Ah so this is why the “always sack the settlement” saying makes sense
I can’t believe I just came across this. You’re literally a saint.
Quality and helpful content, you deserve a sub
Much appreciated! More like it to come.
I just hate it how neighboring factions treat trespassing as nothing - I'm always like "GET THE FUCK OUTTA MY LANDS!!" >:(
I feel similar… however, looking on the bright side, it helps provoke war - which is what the game is about, no?
Also, I reckon when factions trespass on my land, it’s them telegraphing that they’ll attack me in the future… so I appreciate it as a hint to prep for war against them.
@@SimonAshworthWood But when you do a pre-emptive attack YOU get punished for it by the pope due to the dumb relationship mechanic in this game.
The A.I plays the "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you" game and you end up in a lose-lose situation: You attack first, everyone hates you now. You do nothing, they get an upper hand moving more forces in.
Glad Total War improved the relationship/trespassing mechanic later on
Honestly, once Ive got some eco going, I spam forts with a town and archer militia each on important borders if I dont wanna pull up with random surprise betrayal bs. The AI gets all weird as you see them wanting to trespass; but not finding the courage seeing several garrissoned forts with the city not even in sight 😂
One good way i found was reputation, its a bit of a pain to let go of some man, but when you release men and get an immaculate reputation I find it way easier to get peace or to stay at peace, also a large army on the frontlines also helps to keep the enemy at bay the Ai only attacks when it thinks it can win.
I always thinked that AI in Total War games have strange behavior. 14 years after release of game and still full of bugs. Good job i will do that. Maybe you should check Shogun 2 as well ? I have the same experience that all hates me after 5 years.
I don't know Shogun 2 as well but I can take a look! To some extent it is just the way the AI are designed in total war games but there may be a little thing like this too!
you probably expanded too quickly and attacked people that had lots of friends.
Shogun 2 is fine, never had a problem like that.
Why dont CA fix this? seems like quite an easy update to do. Changing a text file.
There is no team responsible for maintaining Medieval two.
Thanks for the video, man!
I fixed this bug as well as passive ai bug. The game feels different, you can play with diplomacy, make strong alliances, etc. It's great, cause it became more of a strategy than just conquering the Word.
Stil, I think the amount of positive effect from occupying a city is probablys too big. I would make it +0,25 for occupy instead of +0,5. Cause you need just 3-4 occupied cities to significantly improve your reputation, which change the whole course of the campaign dramatically. I'm playing as France now and with perfect reputation and strong army almost everyone turns to be my vassal after 2-3 fight wins, I don't even need to besiege their capital, etc. I made almost the whole Europe my vassals on vh/vh by turn 60 or so.
Thanks for this video, great coming back to this game and being able to fix everything yourself!
Role-playing ridiculous Portugal in the thumbnail I see!? 😅 They were always the sort to randomly invade half way across the map.
Second to Milan, they are the most insane!
Portugal is a fun campaign. Tricky but enjoyable!
Does this only work on the Steam version? I have an old CD version of Medieval 2 and didn't have a faction_standing file in my data folder. I created one and added the altered content but I'm not sure if my old game version recognizes this folder or if it only exists in the steam version of the game
Any clues?
A good question. You should be able to use the code on the back of the booklet to play via steam. I haven't used the cd version for years so I must say I don't know what differences there are. In rome, the file is in its own folder called 'preferences', but other than that uggestion I'm not sure!
Has anyone taken out the semi-colons for the change to target settlement's enemy's relationship so that the enemy of your enemy has a relationship change based on how you handled taking a settlement? Just curious on how this changed gameplay if at all.
Awesome video, was just searching on internet guides about this but couldn't really understand them! Thx a lot, would ask: do you recommend the mod stainless steel?
A video is so much simpler to understand isn't it!? Those written guides are very confusing.
Glad to help! I haven't played stainless steel as i tend to play around with the vanilla game myself. I've seen quite a lot of it though and it seems pretty darn solid.
Reinstalled the Game recently and started a Campaign, this seems to be working, I made a few more changes though to some other areas reducing some penalties. Some 60 turns in (playing at 2 turns per year) relations are good and steady without wondering why they are constantly getting worse.
My god I have been looking for a fix for this for ages, thank you!
Thanks so much!!
One question
Do i need to set the Faction Standing file to read only?
I don't think you do. Though I do recall that I would sometimes play with read only to make the files behave. Try without first I suggest.
In case you were wondering, it does not seem to be fixed for the mobile version of the game 🙄
this caption is actually my life story
🤣
Thank you for this guide! I've always wondered too, why everyone seems to hate me. Even though I try to be trustworthy. I followed your guide and it seems to work. Do you know if this works for the Kingdoms campaigns? If not, its not as big of a deal anyway since there aren't as many factions that'll hate you.
It does indeed work on Kingdoms. If my Kalmar campaign is anything to go by then alliances will stand happily pretty much until you're ranked number 1. Only then will they start to stab you in the back.
To Nerd is to Human TNH Makes sense. Gang up on the superpower. That’s how diplomacy is supposed to work. Thanks again :)
Why would taking a city increase your global standing? It would make people see you as a warmonger and threat to world peace, and more of a threat because you’re more powerful.
Hello! I'm using Vanilla Beyond mod, and there is not available that descr_factionstanding.txt. If I import that .txt from the original MTW2 unpacker and place it in the Vanilla Beyond data folder, could that work?
Awesome, I'll have to get around to trying this :)
As a much more frequent player of RTW, I'm very curious about the relationship between these 2 games in terms of diplomacy. There is no diplomacy file in RTW, and therefore no way to peek under the hood to figure how the AI makes its decisions. However, I've long suspected that M2 uses the same basic system of RTW, but with more transparency (i.e., the game actually tells you how the AI evaluates its offers, and shows you your standing and relationships, none of which is given in RTW).
I have no idea, therefore, if Occupying, Enslaving, or Exterminating cities in RTW affects diplomatic standing or relationships... which would be nice to know!
I would assume its very similar as the game engine is the same. Perhaps in Med II it is simply a little more transparent than in Rome. I think there are more triggers to help your relationships too but that is just a guess. Yeah I have wanted to do a video on Rome's occupy, enslave exterminate options but I would want to have a better idea of the relationship impacts caused by it. I suspect it doesn't change things and that's why it was emphasised more in medieval II.
An Excellent guide!
I played as England as always got backstabbed by the whole Christindome. At first I tried to get an alliance but after few round they all started to gang up on me and the pope threaten to excommunicated me for defending myself. Portugal always invade my country by sea and after I repel them. They send a diplomat for ceasefire and requested I pay 13k of gold for reparation. I've been more war with a Christian country than a Muslim. I started my war at turn 12 and now I'm at 174 struggling to survive because I keep getting backstabbed.
I was looking to do a video exploring the pope mechanics. You can get away with attacking them inside your territory and it won't badly affect the pope's relationship with you but if you counter attack into their territory then the pope won't care who started it!
And backstabbing in Med II is a constant menace. This diplomacy fix helps a bit if you do go around occupying... Still, once you get to number 1 in the end of turn report stats they will all turn on you no matter what your reputation. Same if you are too near the bottom. Try to be unremarkable! 😂
Basically That Worked Like Aggressive Expansion In EU4 But A Bit Extreme
Me, having sacked every single settlement: 🙃
Sicily can never be stopped
Thank you!!
I recently started a campaign against Scotland; I release all prisoners and occupy all settlements, and my rating went from Immaculate to Despicable. I couldn't figure out why, but I guess this is it!
probably has something to do with you as a christian fighting other cristians , i generaly stay away from fellow christians unless i cant help it heck i even gave durazzo to venice just so they fuck off and peace out
I dunno, I made these edits and started a new campaign, and it's been fine ever since!
Wow thanks for your help
Happy to help :D
Ok, I have a lengthy question, hope you find the time to answer. I have known about this glitch for a decade, and I always remember to implement it. However downloaded a fresh install the other day to play some vanilla and fixed the pikes before launching. Of course, after taking one settlement I remembered to go fix diplo aswell. In my experience this can be done mid playthrough. IIRC if you don't fix your file, the global rep will never improve beyond mixed.
Now I have a turn 79 save. I'm at war with 8 factions they alle started, some of them allies with good relations. No one will take vassaldom, not even England, whom I offered three settlements. No one will take a ceasefire. The pope refused my alliance with perfect relations. I HAVE IMMACULATE REP for the first time ever. 1.0. Maxed. Everyone treats me exactly the same as any with despicable rep. No one will take any deal, no matter what.
Why? Is this hardcoded in my save file, since I changed it after starting? That can't be the case since my global rep has actually changed, right?
Is this bug still present in the latest kingdoms edition that i downloaded from steam? Or is the bug only present in vanilla?
I'm In a HRE game, tur 60. I allied with Milan and Hungary at the start and declared not a single war.... Milan turned on me right away and turned the other Italian States on to me. Now I have to fight off byzantines, France, Milan, Venice, Poland, Denmark and sicily!! Wtf. This was a pacifist run too!!! Thanks so much for this video as it explains exactly what happened as I was being chivalrous.
well Ive managed to apply the modification but when I apply "read only" to the preference file, lots of the text disappears from the game, such as the menu text or the win conditions. sb experienced this to and can help?
I did everything like you but now whenever i join a battle the game crashes. And when i make everything the same as it was it doesnt help.Have you any idea what i can do ?
Its some geography files that need to be deleted everythings fine :) thanks for the vid.
@@amar1mazlami844 oh gosh the geography files, yes. I'm guessing you have an older version of the game because I remember that solution ages back. I'll make an extra pinned comment on the video to remind people of that problem. Cheers!
@@amar1mazlami844 hey, can you explain how you solved this problem? I also have an older version of the game and now my battles are chrashing too (after I fixed the bug)
just recently found your channel, thanks for doing these tutorials. I have a question though, does this change affect the AI behavior in the Kingdoms games too?
It always seems like this is one of those things. The definitive disk version feels so much better than the steam version. Just because of these little bug fixes they forgot to rectify
Was diplomacy fixed in the disk version? It seems to me i remember taking everything even on very hard. I don't remember it ever being this hard though. Playing as Russia (for the first time) I'm at war with every neighbor and some of the neighbor's neighbors. I have hardly gotten any trade income all game. Without trade income i can barely keep enough troops made to fend off the deluge of attacks even with the occasional save scum.
do u also change that file to read only as well or no?
Mate u've just saved me a lot of pain. Cheers.
Happy to help!
Mate, just one question.
With this fix, does this affects AI aggressivness towards player?
If my reputation and global standing is good, will AI attack me every 3 turns like a horde of zombies?
Or it is just more likely for AI to offer you ceasefire and accept one from you?
Thank you, all the best!
So I did all the unpacking and stuff, but I can't see the unpacked files, so I can't edit them. It's like they aren't there. Same with my save files, I can see them when I run the game but, when I open the saves, it's empty.
Any help?
Also, I have the Medieval 2 Total War Gold, so idk if that makes a difference?
I've looked into it and yes, Gold edition does make a difference - essentially there's a missing unpacker file. I can't experiment myself to guide you as I don't have that version. But it is discussed on the total war centre site: www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?355307-Unpacking-The-very-first-steps-amp-simplest-method-for-new-modders
I hope that helps.
@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment as well as looking into it yourself! I will definitely look into it more

It does work during a current campaign but unless it is very early on it is likely the damage is a already done. You'll more likely see the effects on a new game.
It always annoys me how people hate you more and more as you get bigger when it should be the opposite
Everyone hates me when I use england
thanks a lot for thia tutorial man. I guess they just forgot to add those at the start because as you said, they probably didn't want that trigger to be active. did you find out about this yourself just going through the files and modding ? also, how can I prevent the desertion on crusades and jihads and why is it so extreme ? I remember seeing it on an old blog post from probably a decade back. Thought it was more common knowledge than it was. Glad people are making use of the fix, it makes a big difference I find!

Did the steps but now the program wont run. I tried running it from steam, my desktop shortcut, and from my files. Anyone know why that would be?
Is this applicable to RTW aswell? Diplomacy and allyship are kind of redundant and mean nothing in that game aswell
Yes
I tried to fix the bug with your video I first watched your modding video and did the stuff ther. Now I can’t open the game do you know what the problem could be?
Try this mod but now, everybody loves me and even when I broke an alliance, I was able to go from very unthrustworthy to reliable over time and quite rapidly.
Played as Hungary for the first time. Around 20 turns in, two factions attacked me, Poland threatened to attack me unless I give them money, and there's a huge rebel army in my territory. I'm like, dude, I'm playing on Normal....
I do not have all these folders and files when i click into data, why is that? I only have Animations, cursors, fmv, sounds and world.
You'll need to unpack the other files: ruclips.net/video/CyIfPqoxvj8/видео.htmlsi=urt7c_3tT8u1jmj4
If the first line says +0,05 and the second one -0,05, shouldn't occupying be a sum of 0?
Is there anyone having this problem: I unpack the files then follow the steps in this video only to have text missing from certain places when on the campaign map? For example when in diplomacy where there should be options for "Offers" and "Demands" but there is nothing at all?
I'm new to the game, decided to check it out as everyone saysit's the best one. I started as england and france decalres war on me I fight back and take paris have a ceasefire for 7 turns as the pope doesn't like it and now spain HRE poland and venice relations are poor. I'm in a defensive war y u hate me?
Playing as Milan 13 turns in already fought against Sicily 4 times(all seige defenses) went after their city ONCE
Papal States: D:<
Next turn Byzantine Empire went out of their way (while in a war against Venice and Hungary) to seige florence
Will this work for a current campaign or will it only go into effect on a new campaign after altering the file?
Might have to try this... got an 80% chance to assassinate the Pope (while excommunicated) and of course my best assassin kills himself with the snake, war declared and abysmal relations the next second afterwards. How am I meant to claim the holy lands if half of Europe is at war with me :P
By using pro strategy and tactics.
To use the unpacker file in tools move everything under Med2exe and put it in the packer says YES 3 x and it unpacks it
Thanks! Does this works for games that have already started?
Yes. It won't recalculate the previous triggers but it will change diplomacy from thereon-in. Though if your reputation is too low it may well be best to restart.
Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching! :)
I tried with vanilla beyond mod installed and It did't work, do you have any suggestion?
One wonders why this was never patched when it was discovered
Has anybody had an issue with unpacking the Teutonic campaign for its files? Mine gets to file 260 or so and then just closes without unpacking
I understand that VH is meant to be hard, but why wouldn't all diplacy revert to 0.0? It seems like a bad or unrealistic mechanic to always have other factions hate you.
IMO all diplomacy should pull towards 0.0 and all changes depend on your actions. The game should be hard on the campaign map and I just think diplomacy should be fair across all difficulties.
My file already had those in city razed section.... yet the ai is still bs
6:08 so what are you telling here, is that basically with time your realtion with the AI is going to be Abysmal no matter what?
On very hard... Yes! Unless you can manage to fight along side them, have the same enemies, occupy cities and find other small ways to make enough gestures to keep them on board...
Bro, I am four of your videos deep at this point started at "Diplomacy & the Pope" before following this video you need to check out - "Why Everyone Hates you (and how to fix it)" Wellll actually you'll need to watch this video first: "Fixing The Diplomacy Bug - Why Everybody Hates You in Medieval II Total War [Vanilla]", well actually you need to watch a video to find out how to use the unpacking tool first. Its not a tutorial if I have to jump to 3 other videos just to figure out what you're doing.
I can't find the file in the game data folder. Is it because I have the CD version? (Gold Edition)
In Gold Edition, the unpacking of the data folder may happen at another destination such as in your virtual store and not in Program Files e.g. (AppData/Local/Virtual Store/Medieval2). Perhaps that is what happened for you?
Yeah I remember making everyone my enemy as Norway and then the Seljuks invaded me with ships 😂 And as the Holy Roman Empire I had many crusades called on me and jihads 😂
Do I need to start a new campaign for the change in the file to take effect?😶
Can you add the semicolons to occupying and extermination too?
Yeah absolutely. Haven't tested how that impacts gameplay but it would stop those lines being read by the game, yes.
I searched the internet for "Medieval II Total War why does everyone hate me" and this great easy to follow video showed up! Thank you! I have a problem though, I followed these instructions and now the game won't launch, can you think of why that might be or how I can fix that?
Not to worry, I just validated the files on Steam and it seems to be working again. Thank you again for a great video that even a Victorian like me can follow it! :D
I love that those were your search terms... sums it up right!?! It is pretty much my opening lines 😅
Happy to help, fellow Victorian. In spite of all my modding videos, the channel is very much based on the premise that if a numpty like me can somehow mod this game then you probably can too! Happy Modding!
It doesnt work for already created games?
I have problem , AI Diplomat come to my city , there is animation that he want to talk about something but nothing happens , and every turn is the same bug ...what to do ??
I don’t think this is a bug, but could be. However, I have found more often than not, this is a diplomat from a nation you are not yet at war with, but likely will be soon. Usually I’m invaded after a few turns of this “bug” occurring.
im somewhat inclined to believe they are trying to bribe ur settlement if that is the case
Does this work with mods? Also, can I load a game after I make the changes?
Adding Greek flamethrowers from kingdoms to m2tw vanilla
But wasn't by that time greek fire was lost already?
"Diplomacy failed us this day"
I started attacking the byzantine as venice and got the Hungarians attack me close to Venice while the byzantine attacked me everywhere in Greece.
I fougth back against the Hungarians just for Sicily to drop in with a boat and conquer my castle while Milan randomly attacked my capital....
I lost everything but two cities in greece (that were still under siege) this coordinated attack took down 7 of my cities in 5 turns but I managed to take back some some land and im about to destroy the byzantine and set my revenge on Milan once things are stable but I'm making peace bc I got reck so good damn fast but I got a revenge arc going on so that cool
Does the game run without a crash after the changes are made? I'm usually afraid to change something because it can then make the whole game unstable
I have personally had no stability issues at all and I play with these changes permanently. Sometimes people do find the older games struggle on modern computers but I imagine if yours usually runs well that this will not change that! Just make sure you have a back up of any file before you change it around. :)
@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH and does it really help? I mean Byzantine will not try to swim half the map to me if I play let's say, Spain? Because even if my relations were good and my princess was married to my ally he backstabbed me anyway. With my reputation being good
@@КурсыиностранныхязыковвМоскве It helps slow down the madness as any time you occupy you will now improve your reputation and your relations. But that is literally the only change here. You will still need to be active in your diplomatic gestures as on harder difficulties the speed at which relationships deteriorate is steep.
In data there is a file called descr_sm_factions In there you can chose if a faction prefers naval invasions or not. Setting that to no may well help a lot with those random invasions!
@@ToNerdistoHumanTNH disabling naval visitors would really help. Thanks, I'll try that. I remember once I played Third age Total war. I quit because I wasn't a fan of Tolkien, but diplomacy there was unbelievably better. If you are an ally, you cant backstab him like a sly cowardly c.nt. you had to send an envoy first and break the alliance officially. Damn, that was good. That's what vanilla misses badly
@@КурсыиностранныхязыковвМоскве yeah but in Med II it costs you reputation to break alliances. With the bug fix alliances aren't likely to break unless they have no choice or you really let your reputation slip
I unpacked the files and changed the diplomacy but now my game refuses to start, any help?
When unpacking you need to delete the following files or it won't run: descr_geography_new.txt and descr_geography_new.db
wouldnt it be better to remove the semicolon next to the trigger line so razing a city has a proper diplomacy trigger at all?
Maybe... you can fiddle with all the options there to get the balance you like best! :)
Razing cities doesn't happen in the game so I don't know if that would just prevent the occupy trigger from setting those off, or if it would do nothing.
Does it work if I already have a campaign started?
Its not bug - its how its supposed to be. If you grow to big other factions are seeing you as threat and attack you. And anyway M2TW is so easy that making it even easier is nonsense
I don't think so, they would have scaled that or had the value much lower. This literally triggers code left under the 'razed' setting, it is clearly a bug.
To be honest I wouldn't consider this a bug. At VH/VH at least, diplomacy becomes treachorous and turbulent, kind of how it was during Medieval times so... it also makes things interesting, compensating for the lack of AI's intelligence. Also, once you improve enough at the game, having actual alliances is very possible, and even useful. But I mean, to each their own.
It's definitely a matter of choice. As you say, it is totally playable without this change (I played it over a decade before making this edit and often still play it with the vanilla files). Personally though, I do like the slightly more sensible outcome with this change. :)
I don't think it's interesting because it just gets ridiculous. Being attacked constantly by multiple enemies and failing to have allies is not necessarily accurate nor is the game really designed for that to be sustainable
Ahh yes, three thousand duckets of trade interrupted because Portugal decided to blockade my capital with a single cog despite our nominal neutrality.
Real medieval times.
Not at all helpful. I assume this is the old file system or not the steam version. None of this is helpful at all.
Is it possible to make my ally dislike my enemies as well?? If so pls make a video I have subbed :)
can you make a tutorial on how to upload our mods?
I've never done it myself but it is something I want to learn about so in time I should get to that, yes!
