The scenery to me looks a lot like floor 22 in Aincrad, it is just my opinion but combine it with the song and the costume and it looks really like Sword Art Online has been brought out in the real world :-) . After watching the behind the scenes video I can also say this, when in the real world something broke it is simple or hard to fix it depending by the extent of the damage, in SAO if something broke or get damaged you take it to Liz or a blacksmith and it is reapired in no time, sparing you a lot of time and work.

I think it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths because it's really hard to rewatch if you watch a lot of anime. The first 12 episodes are still really good, though, IMO. Second arc was weird even for a creep like me, third was good, not great, watched the last two arcs out of habit more than anything else. 16.5 was cringey as fuck. Keep in mind, this is all my experience, but I thought Kawahara could have done a better job. The Abridged version by Something Witty Entertainment is pure gold, though. Sweet merciful Buddha, that is a good series.

Shella Akashi My main problem with sao is this; how does screaming your lungs out and physically pushing yourself (at least they seem to do so) helps in a virtual reality online game?? It should be all about strategy and experience as a gamer which is what log horizon is all about. Shiroe's fast logical thinking, smart battle strategy and leading/saving people behind the shadows is what makes him cool and it's very suitable with the setting (which is a virtual reality online game) as well. Kirito on the other hand is op just because he was a beta player, and him shouting his lungs out while charging forward in a virtual reality game is just cringe worthy in my opinion -_- What actually makes sao popular is the general idea behind the series, nice animation, cool battle scenes and beautiful music. You can find all of these plus better main character and a more logical approach that goes well together with the setting in log horizon
