I also visited Charleston this year. The cobble stones you walked on are actually ballast stones that came over from Britain in the trading ships. The ships needed the stones on the way to America for added weight but when the cargo of cotton was loaded on for the journey back to Britain the stones were no longer needed. Thus the stones were then used to cobble the streets. That’s a fun fact we learned on our trip. I hope you get to tour one of the plantations on your trip. We went to the Boone Hall plantation. Savannah is another beautiful city full of history. ❤
I live in Charleston. Interesting about the cobble stones. I moved here from NYC. Boone Hall is not the nicest plantation unfortunately. U needed to go to West Ashley. There u hv 3. Middleton, Magnolia and Drayton Hall!! Magnolia has the most gorgeous gardens!!!! I felt I was in Gervney, France!!! Incredible. Next time u come for a visit, come in April.

Fleet Landing is a great place for seafood. One of the few places on the water in downtown. Shem Creek has lots of places to eat. It's just across the bridge toward Mt. Pleasant.
It seems as though people from other countries don't think America deserves historical respect because we are a younger country. When in fact America not only does have a rich & long history but we also celebrate & preserve that history. Hopefully we can learn to avoid some of the mistakes we have made in the past from our history. Just like Mardi Gras in the US did not start in New Orleans but in Mobile, AL. New Orleans just embraced the true French culture more, that of urinating in the streets. Charleston and Mobile are far cleaner places but not as wild, so they don't get the college kids in droves.
If you like the older resort sort of town you should check out Cape May NJ :) The city was named for Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, who explored and chartered the area from 1611 to 1614. I'm actually named after a decendent of Captain Mey. Cape May the oldest seaside resort in America and the beautiful Victorian homes are worth the visit as they are all on the historic register and have strick rules to keep them historic in structure and color schemes. There are also wonderful eating places and fun bars as well as a pedestrian mall with great ambience especially at Christmas time.
Charleston is where my daughter and husband live! Shaun, you could stay there a month and never be through with all the great restaurants there. Almost always gotta have reservations. Such a wonderful city.
Definitely check out Charleston‘s little sister city Savannah, which is very similar, but is a river town and has a bit more drinking culture. The Savannah bananas their baseball team are very unique similar to the Harlem globe trotters
Charleston can be a foodie's heaven but you do need reservations. Book early as they fill up fast. Some of my favorites unfortunately are gone, courtesy of the pandemic. You might want to try Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar. You probably don't have time for it but Magnolia Plantation is a very interesting place to visit. They have various tours around the plantation and the gardens are beautiful. I always stop there when I get to Charleston. You can easily spend a whole day there and they get busy quickly so if you do get to go, go EARLY! Pick up a copy of the official visitor's guide. Your hotel should have a copy. Lots to do and see in Charleston and loaded with history.
Great video. My wife wants so much to visit there. Others have mentioned Savannah, where we have visited. One of Savannah's claim to fame is that its about the only place you can find much pre-civil war architecture. Sherman said he spared it on his "march to the sea" because it was so beautiful. Outside Savannah is Bonaventure Cemetery. Sounds weird, I know, but its an incredible place.
YEAH!!! This is my neck of the woods! Love it! Family from here for a couple hundred years after sailing over from Scotland! Make sure you try the shrimp & grits. Get Grits to take home from the City Market. Souvenir sweetgrass baskets are a lot less at Boone Hall Plantation than in Charleston.
South Carolina native here. There is an old aircraft carrier (and other ships) you can visit and go on a tour of. They even have a room dedicated to the stories of South Carolina awarded the medal of honor. It is called the USS Yorktown. There are ferries there to Fort Sumter, a famous site from the American civil war. Lots of good stuff, hope you have a great time!
Welcome to the Holy City (there are are over 400 churches there) . It is a historical and beautiful place. As the saying goes Charleston is where the Cooper River and the Ashley River form the Atlantic Ocean.
Charleston is called the Holy City not only because of the amount of churches but more importantly for its religious tolerance. It has welcomed people of all faiths from day 1. After New York it has the oldest Reformed Jewish Synagogue in the country and the only still active French Huguenot Church in the country as well as just about every other Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith.
Charleston and Savannah are definitely jewels of the south. I recognized the similarities between Savannah and New Orleans. But, as you say, more grown up. Since you mention doing ghost tour, that would be interesting videos to do for Halloween season.
My parents and grandparents’ generation said “Scotch- Irish” ( my ancestry ). I am 68. I don’t think my family meant disrespect, but I can certainly understand why it would be. Thank you, Shaun!!!
My family as well always described our ancestry as "Scotch-Irish". It wasn't until I was a young adult that I learned better, and I never use "Scotch" anymore except in reference to the adult beverage, lol.

I think Scotch was just an old term. Many of my ancestors came from Scotland and in old genealogy paperwork they were often referred to as Scotch or Scottish. Scotch-Irish was also commonly said. (These terms were used by people who were proud of their ancestry.) Language definitely changes with time! 😀 Do you generally say, “I’m a Scot” or “I’m Scottish”? Glad you're enjoying your trip. I need a trigger warning (kidding!!) before seeing the horse-drawn carriage historical tours. I took one as a kid, and discovered about half-way through that I was horribly allergic to horses. They were kind enough to stop near a pharmacy so I could get some anti-hystamine and away from the horses. I only remember one other thing about Charleston - the Earthquake Bolts that go through the buildings, and end with a decorative cap, since one of the US's largest earthquakes actually happened in Charleston, not California like you'd think.

Charleston is where the American Civil War started after Fort Sumter and was fired upon by CSA troops in 1861. There might be a tour associated with that if you're interested.
I live 25 minutes from downtown Charleston. We did my daughter's senior pics and prom pics on the battery, rainbow row, and Joe Riley Park (where the pineapple fountain was). You actually had a little bit of Rainbow Row in your video. I hope you got to do the tours because they are very educational and help you know more about the history of Charleston. Also, go to the market!! The woman who make the sweet grass baskets are AMAZINGLY talented. And if you like learning about language, attend one of the Gullah seminars around town. They teach you a little of the language, the food, and the history of early slaves. It is fascinating and impressive how long their culture has survived and how deep it runs in their families. My daughters loved having the Gullah women come to their schools. They are natural born story tellers. Next time visit some of the beaches. Botany Bay in Edisto is one of my favorites. It isn't far from Charleston and worth the short walk to the beach. Great for a video or pictures. I have tons of pics to share if you'd like, just shoot me a message. I grew up between Charleston & Savannah in a little SC coastal town called Beaufort. I recommend a stop there some time when you're between the larger cities. It's known as "Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea" and resembles a little Charleston. I've lived in both Charleston (12 years) and Savannah (3 years). Charleston is cleaner, quieter, more "classic" and Savannah has more of the party reputation. I moved to Savannah first and decided it wasn't for me, but Charleston was perfect. North of Charleston, a little town called Georgetown is another small coastal town with beautiful features. The SC coastal towns are classic, full of culture, and beautiful. We can't forget the beaches either. Hunting Island near Beaufort is a must-see. It is one of the last remaining natural barrier islands on the east coast. Isle of Palms & Sullivan's Island in the Charleston area offer some beautiful beaches, Folly Beach off James Island, and Pawleys Island farther north, closer to Myrtle Beach are all recommended. I hope you had an amazing time! We always eat at Hymans Seafood and/or 82 Queen when in Charleston, but I highly recommend riding to Shem Creek in Mt Pleasant (the northern coastal side of Charleston) and visiting the Shem Creek restaurants. They sit on the water, accessible by boat, and have live music on weekends. We always stop at Red's Ice House. ❤

We visited Charleston on our honeymoon so it has a special place in my heart. I recognized a couple areas you walked as places we also strolled down. We were there many years ago before a couple of hurricanes that did a lot of damage. It's good to see things are still pretty much the same. It's a really beautiful city.

My 3x Great grandparents arrived in Charleston in 1847 from Prussia. Their old tailor shop is still on King Street there. I've visited several of the family graves that are in Magnolia Cemetary. They were Jews and went to Charleston because there was a large Jewish population there at the time. Left the German issues just in time for the American Civil War...Yay!
Charleston was very good to the Jews. They were able to flourish in Charleston and assimilate there. I think it the oldest reform Jewish synagogue in America.
I was there over Labor Day weekend and we stayed in the historic district a little north of where you were; there were parties all over, but especially on King Street.

The breed of horse you asked about that was pulling the wagon is called Belgian. They’re a breed of draft horse trained to ill wagons and carriages. Very gently, and very powerful. Usually a tan color, with a cream colored mane (hair) also recognizable by the hair on their features called feathering.

I’ve lived in Charleston all my life. (I’m descended from the Anderson clan.). A lot of restaurants and bars closed due to Covid. They are still struggling to have enough help therefore places close earlier sometimes than they used to (prior to Covid). So glad to have you both here in Charleston. So many places to see.
But so many opened since Covid!! Please! We were open! Our Governor did not close the state down. Our mayor may hv tried but it was just in the beginning. It is true some restaurants can’t find enough help bc rents hv gotten expensive. But that had nothing to do with Covid!! I hv lived here for 16 years. There r more restaurants here than ever before. I’m on Johns Island. Hv u bern here recently??? It’s a joke what’s going on here. Covid brought thousands of ppl to Charleston. That’s why this guy can’t get into a restaurant. Not for a lack of restaurants. It’s bc so many ppl moved here from NY and Northeast. Also CA.
You used to hear some Americans refer to the ‘Scotch’, but that was many years ago. Anyone who has traveled to Scotland would know you do not use that term unless you are referring to 🥃 - and then you just ask for a whisky if you don’t want to be redundant 😊.
You will learn about the Slave Market, The Battery (along the waterfront) and Fort Sumter. This is where the Civil War got sparked. You can take a boat ride out to the fort. Try to get to the bar on the roof of the Market Pavillion. You can see Charleson this way. I have been there many times it is a very sophisticated, historical and charming place. Charleston is beautiful. There are hundreds of towns and little cities all over United States that are like this and very historical. You should see Williamsburg Virginia, Cape May New Jersey and New Hope Pennsylvania and many beautiful places all through New England and Long Island, and in the Upper Peninsula Michigan. We have many historical towns and Victorian towns that look like you just walked into the 1800s. You need to stop going to big cities and see the real America. Did you even go to any of our national parks? 👍🏻👍🏻❤🇺🇸🙏🏻

Charleston is full of pre- Civil War architecture; that is her tourist draw. Savannah is beautiful too.
Sherman didn’t burn any port city won his march from Georgia to NC. He needed them intact so he could be resupplied from the Navy.

That tax law came from England and After the Revolution we got rid of that. That is why all the row houses in England or so small and skinny.
The houses are a lot like those on Barbados, where the planters came from.

Charleston is where the American Civil War started after Fort Sumter and was fired upon by CSA troops in 1861. There might be a tour associated with that if you're interested.
In the mid/late 90’s Charleston was a hell of a party city!

I live 25 minutes from downtown Charleston. We did my daughter's senior pics and prom pics on the battery, rainbow row, and Joe Riley Park (where the pineapple fountain was). You actually had a little bit of Rainbow Row in your video. I hope you got to do the tours because they are very educational and help you know more about the history of Charleston. Also, go to the market!! The woman who make the sweet grass baskets are AMAZINGLY talented. And if you like learning about language, attend one of the Gullah seminars around town. They teach you a little of the language, the food, and the history of early slaves. It is fascinating and impressive how long their culture has survived and how deep it runs in their families. My daughters loved having the Gullah women come to their schools. They are natural born story tellers. Next time visit some of the beaches. Botany Bay in Edisto is one of my favorites. It isn't far from Charleston and worth the short walk to the beach. Great for a video or pictures. I have tons of pics to share if you'd like, just shoot me a message. It always floods with the tides. Wasn't too bad. Downtown has horrible drainage, so it's common. Charleston here :)
I grew up between Charleston & Savannah in a little SC coastal town called Beaufort. I recommend a stop there some time when you're between the larger cities. It's known as "Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea" and resembles a little Charleston. I've lived in both Charleston (12 years) and Savannah (3 years). Charleston is cleaner, quieter, more "classic" and Savannah has more of the party reputation. I moved to Savannah first and decided it wasn't for me, but Charleston was perfect. North of Charleston, a little town called Georgetown is another small coastal town with beautiful features. The SC coastal towns are classic, full of culture, and beautiful. We can't forget the beaches either. Hunting Island near Beaufort is a must-see. It is one of the last remaining natural barrier islands on the east coast. Isle of Palms & Sullivan's Island in the Charleston area offer some beautiful beaches, Folly Beach off James Island, and Pawleys Island farther north, closer to Myrtle Beach are all recommended.
I hope you had an amazing time! We always eat at Hymans Seafood and/or 82 Queen when in Charleston, but I highly recommend riding to Shem Creek in Mt Pleasant (the northern coastal side of Charleston) and visiting the Shem Creek restaurants. They sit on the water, accessible by boat, and have live music on weekends. We always stop at Red's Ice House. ❤

Get some Benne wafers while you're there. You can get them at tourist spots or the grocery.
Get tea from Charleston Tea Plantation. It's the only tea grown in the US (lrg commercial).
We visited Charleston on our honeymoon so it has a special place in my heart. I recognized a couple areas you walked as places we also strolled down. We were there many years ago before a couple of hurricanes that did a lot of damage. It's good to see things are still pretty much the same. It's a really beautiful city.

The Battery is a beautiful place to walk. Part of the movie series North and South was filmed there, based on the civil war. Patrick Swayze was in it. I hope you enjoyed your stay…

My 3x Great grandparents arrived in Charleston in 1847 from Prussia. Their old tailor shop is still on King Street there. I've visited several of the family graves that are in Magnolia Cemetary. They were Jews and went to Charleston because there was a large Jewish population there at the time. Left the German issues just in time for the American Civil War...Yay!
Charleston was very good to the Jews. They were able to flourish in Charleston and assimilate there. I think it the oldest reform Jewish synagogue in America.

I was there over Labor Day weekend and we stayed in the historic district a little north of where you were; there were parties all over, but especially on King Street.

When I went to the Carolinas long ago after growing up in Southern California, I felt wonderfully comfortable in the Carolinas …. Then I learned there’s a lot of my Ol kin there. TAIT - Scottish and hush the other part is Irish, English and Welsh… just a British Isles mutt I suppose but lovable 😂

Charleston used to be the major port city for the southern US. Goods shipping from Georgia would ship from there rather than Savannah. Deeper, larger port.

This infamous feat “struck a great Terror to the whole Province of Carolina.” Plundering eight or nine ships for supplies and specie, Blackbeard held hostages, including Samuel Wragg, a councilman. Under the threat of the hostages being murdered, a reluctant Governor Robert Johnson agreed to a ransom of a valuable chest of medicine.

South Carolina had many Revolutionary War Battles and had divided loyalties. The British Defeats there led to Cornwallis surrendering in Yorktown.

I live in the upstate of SC. Charleston has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It is a classic and classy Southern city. It is very refined. New Orleans is very bawdy. However, the College of Charleston is sometimes known as a “party’s school”!

The breed of horse you asked about that was pulling the wagon is called Belgian. They’re a breed of draft horse trained to ill wagons and carriages. Very gently, and very powerful. Usually a tan color, with a cream colored mane (hair) also recognizable by the hair on their features called feathering.

I’ve lived in Charleston all my life. (I’m descended from the Anderson clan.). A lot of restaurants and bars closed due to Covid. They are still struggling to have enough help therefore places close earlier sometimes than they used to (prior to Covid). So glad to have you both here in Charleston. So many places to see.
But so many opened since Covid!! Please! We were open! Our Governor did not close the state down. Our mayor may hv tried but it was just in the beginning. It is true some restaurants can’t find enough help bc rents hv gotten expensive. But that had nothing to do with Covid!! I hv lived here for 16 years. There r more restaurants here than ever before. I’m on Johns Island. Hv u bern here recently??? It’s a joke what’s going on here. Covid brought thousands of ppl to Charleston. That’s why this guy can’t get into a restaurant. Not for a lack of restaurants. It’s bc so many ppl moved here from NY and Northeast. Also CA.
You used to hear some Americans refer to the ‘Scotch’, but that was many years ago. Anyone who has traveled to Scotland would know you do not use that term unless you are referring to 🥃 - and then you just ask for a whisky if you don’t want to be redundant 😊.

You will learn about the Slave Market, The Battery (along the waterfront) and Fort Sumter. This is where the Civil War got sparked. You can take a boat ride out to the fort. Try to get to the bar on the roof of the Market Pavillion. You can see Charleson this way. I have been there many times it is a very sophisticated, historical and charming place. I hope you have a wonderful time.

Charleston is beautiful. There are hundreds of towns and little cities all over United States that are like this and very historical. You should see Williamsburg Virginia, Cape May New Jersey and New Hope Pennsylvania and many beautiful places all through New England and Long Island, and in the Upper Peninsula Michigan. We have many historical towns and Victorian towns that look like you just walked into the 1800s. You need to stop going to big cities and see the real America. Did you even go to any of our national parks? 👍🏻👍🏻❤🇺🇸🙏🏻

They would "freak out" if they could visit Mackinac Island (pronounced "MACK-in-awe) in Michigan and stay at the Grand Hotel. Watch the beautiful movie, "Somewhere in Time", with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour to see how magical the island and Hotel are.

My father’s family is from South Carolina from as far back as I can trace. I really appreciate your interest in the historical relevance of the city in the context of slavery and that of the country. Most reactors don’t delve into the history of the places they visit. Can’t wait to see more!
