      So I had a friend that was a few years older than me. She loved Tori in the 90’s and I hadn’t heard of her yet. We lived in different states and I heard that Tori was doing an interview on the local radio station where I lived so I recorded it for my friend. I fell in love with Tori’s speaking voice first and how she carried herself and that was the start of my fascination.

    She was born and raised in NC. I found that kind of interesting and surprising. This is first time I'm actually hearing her speaking voice after years of only having listened to her music, and not knowing anything about her background. I don't even hear a trace of a southern accent, and just the styling of her music, the genre, is not something I would expect to come out of the south, and that's what's so cool and interesting about her. When I first heard Little Earthquakes, I thought maybe she is British or from some other European country, or maybe from NYC, or maybe Canada, or L.A. or some place like that. It's a pleasant surprise to find out that some more avant-garde and edgey type pop/rock music has come out of the south. I thought it was funny him trying to sell her on Carsons ribs when she is from NC, one of the best places in the country for barbecue. I am from Chicago and have had Carson's ribs and have spent a good amount of time in NC, and Carson's is no comparison to good NC barbecue.

      She wasn't really raises in North Carolina, not exactly. She was born there but moved to Silver Spring, Maryland when she was admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore at age five. From then on, she grew up in Maryland just outside of Washington, which is why she played at a gay club in Georgetown at age 12, and hotels around Capitol Hill until she moved to L.A. She did visit her grandparents in North Carolina for extended periods.
      I do hear southern influence in her music, especially in some songs on Boys for Pele and Scarlet's Walk. The DC-area influence is present throughout a fair amount of her music.
      It's worth noting, too, that besides regional cultural influences, her mother's side of the family belong to the Eastern Cherokee tribe of North Carolina, and that, by way of her grandfather in particular, has a strong influence on her music and her worldview. She was always torn up in the press for being kooky because of her animist worldview and some of the allusions she makes, and it has only occurred to me over the past decade or so how bigoted the interpretation of her as mentally off is. She sees the world and experiences life with influence from an American Indian cultural perspective and any of those notions, which she expresses freely, always have been mocked to describe her as crazy.

    So many hours, days, listening to her records and obsessing about the evolution of her look/style. Man she made this little 15 year old boys life sparkle! Believe me, having been raised mormon, ain't nobody was singing about masturbating while the family was downstairs doing bible study. To me, life only truly started May 5th 1998 the day Choirgirl was released. I'm so lucky to have been able to meet her, and look her in the eye to tell her: "Your music, quite literally, saved my ass from a cult."

    i loved this interview, I was 22 years old then and having a blast with the grunge scene, Soundgarden Alice I. C. my fav back then and Tool, but Tori rapidly became a favorite, these days 2022 after seeing these beautiful strong women I dont see women like these now and WHY???

    • @AR-ej2xw
      @AR-ej2xw Год назад +7

      GOOD FUCKING QUESTION. Like it seems like the ONLY available lane for women embracing strength these days is through embracing their sexuality--well, at least IMO, they aren't actually doing that. They're embracing a sexuality created for them. Tori was sexy and wrote about sex but wrote about it from her voice--sometimes full of lust, sometimes full of anger, resentment, warmth, complexity. And she wrote about a whole raft of other things too.
      I guess, hm. I guess Lana has some of that sensibility, and naturally Fiona Apple's still killing it, but a Tori, or like a Natalie Merchant? I feel like they're gone. Quiet strength and truths worth uncovering just aren't being done in pop anymore.
      Maybe Rosalia is a bit of that actually, too? And probably more. But not many and not getting spins. There is certain a vision of a strong female artist that existed in the 90s that just seems to have fallen away.
      Certainly the fuck not Taylor Swift.

    • @melaniekeller246
      @melaniekeller246 Год назад

      I'd like to share with you my comment (above). I was very much influenced by these strong women in the 90s, so much that I needed to express myself through music. I will take my comments down in time because this is not my video. but anyway - I am here.

    Oh my gosh that was brilliant! Thank you for sharing that. Wild to think it was 1990. That was the year I was born 😱! I’ve been doing a deep dive since 2020 into Tori’s music and everything in between. Her and I have a very similar story regarding our intro into music. Began playing and composing VERY young. Was called to the piano by the muses around 2-3 years of age. (Musical expression is quite literally, everything. It’s the only way I can express myself, or express certain complex emotions regarding life/the world/the universe in general or, as I see and understand it) Played in church, sang in the choir until I began to feel disconnected and isolated due to certain character traits.. left the church around 15, played in bars and galleries, had a band (or 3) that didn’t make it etc. I WAS a female artist. I transitioned at 22 from female to male. So I understand those difficulties and the people who create said difficulties. Things went in a slightly different direction for me. I’m not in the public eye right now, and am fighting my own battles to get to where I need to be musically.
    I’ve actually been wanting to write to her for sometime. But I don’t want to do so without a finished piece of work to share along with the letter. Absolutely adore her. It’s nice to be able to relate to someone, and have the privilege of being able to enjoy what they do. Loved the interaction between these two 😄 Take care! ☮️&❤!

      @ryan06105 I think it's because it's what people do naturally as human beings. And you did say similar, that's true. I think I relate to her frustration, so I always feel compelled to say something. People seem to always compare me to the same artist (unless they have more exposure to other female artists), and people really like to be viewed at unique. Especially singers. Voices are like fingerprints. You seem to get it, though. Sorry for coming off as defensive.

    But she didn't fancy it on the night so my sister's hubby came along with me. He was gob smacked to see all the hippy chicks sitting on the floor getting boozed up at the interval. He came from a bit of a 'proper' family bless him.
