Hollywood & Smoke , the story goes that Vai played a more elaborate solo initially. When mixing down the album , Tim edited Vai's solo. When Vai heard the edit he wasn't very pleased at first but afrer a few listens relented it was a better fit for the song. A great display of mutual respect between these artist.

I love this video its visual storytelling is subtle but on point, as the song intros and the band comes together they are in this tighter all white space with very little detail, but as the song gets more complicated they graduate to bigger and bigger spaces as they show off their individual styles and make the instrumentation more and more complicated, as if they are on a journey to reach "the king of guitars in the heavens" eventually reaching open sky and the top of the building with their goal sitting there in judgment, they then play for the "king" wanting for his approval, he sits there and listens, and when he decides they are worthy he joins in their song literally making the guitars sing in harmony accepting them as equals in glory.

Ego death is when you take so much of a psychedelic you can't separate yourself from your environment. You essentially melt into the world. It's a temporary state, but it's a religious experience for some people

I saw Steve Vai live a few years ago on the Generation Axe tour with Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi… THAT was a lot of guitars lol. Back in 1990 Steve Vai had a 10 year old guitar player named Thomas McRocklin in his video for ‘The Audience is Listening’ (which is a fun video btw.) So it seems like he’s been supporting young artists for a long time.

Great reaction guys! Love this song! If you’re digging the technical guitar playing and want something similar you should check out Liquid Tension Experiment which is basically Dream Theater with no singer. I highly recommend the live version of Paradigm Shift or Acid Rain. Incredible technical playing by all 4 musicians, it’s a sight to behold.

The best thing about Steve's playing here is his show of restraint. He's famous for smoking that axe, and he could have just ripped off and let loose but he played within the melody of the track and showed how much of a professional and legend he is by not just going insane.

Absolutely amazing song. The song title Ego Death I believe refers to three of the greatest guitarist out there today putting their egos aside to make an amazing song. If you pay attention in the video, on the first floor Tim Henson is sitting on the throne, on the second floor Scott LePage is sitting on the throne, and when you get to the roof, Godfather Steve Vai is sitting on the throne. That in my opinion is where the title Ego Death comes from. Their egos were completely put to the side to make this amazing song.
