Thank you very much for uploading! More Dalcroze demonstrations need to be available on RUclips, and this is of excellent quality.

Thank you so much for posting this. I studied with John and recall fondly learning similar exercises. Memories of him remain fresh in my mind after many years.

Where did you get this video? I have only heard great things about John Colman. I searched the UW Madison LIbrary database and couldn't find it. Do you know if this full demonstration video is available somewhere? Where did you get this copy?

I am writing an essay on Dalcroze Eurhythmics for University, and wondered how I could get a copy of this video to hand in with it? Many thanks

Anyone know what pieces he's playing?

All of the music was his. He was a master improviser. How I wish I had recorded more of the classes he played for Hanya Holm. Pure brilliance. He studied with Hindemith as well as Nadia Boulanger, I believe.

I was surprised at how to just feel the rhythm and the song itself. It really helps people who have an elephant or a bear in their ear ...;)

The dance instructor knowledge is really lacking in the current way they teach this. Rather a big shame ... they completely threw out the knowledge of posture and movement and told students to do whatever. They also threw out the visualization or imagination aspect to see/feel the rhythm before you increase it. Just like audiation for rhythm. Most excellent idea which is not there in the modern teaching. Eh...

This depends a lot on where, and with whom, you study eurhythmics today. I'll say that in particular at the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva, there is a major emphasis on developing and refining the movement of students, to a greater extent than I've experienced anywhere here in the US. And, of course, it's worth noting that Colman, who played for NYC Ballet with Balanchine for much of his professional life, and studied with Dalcroze directly, was especially aware of and skilled at teaching these skills.
