It should be noted that the resurgence in popularity of this particular song is unprecedented. Apart from a handful of Christmas songs, the only other example which comes anywhere near is "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which became a hit 16 years after it was released thanks to the movie "Wayne's World". By contrast, "Running Up That Hill" is now a hit 37 years after it was released! The point I'm trying to make here is that the resurgence of "Running" has more to do with Kate as a unique artist. Stranger Things was just a vehicle for "Kathy" to come back again and try to possess our souls, like she did to Heathcliff in 1978! Sorry for the somewhat cryptic final remark!
Late 80's, Early 90's in the UK, several older songs got to number one (or damned close) thanks to Levi's Adverts. Percy Sledge "When a man loves a woman", Ben E King "Stand by me", Jackie Wilson "Reet Petite", even the Clash 'cashed in" which felt most odd.
What's up with holding the mic and waving it around? Super distracting and annoying. Kate Bush is English not American. Therefore, she pronounces the words (and vowels) correctly. Please do your homework! Her work is heavily influenced by traditional English and Irish music. For example, the bodhran is clearly referenced in RUTH. In an overwhelmingly male dominated field, Kate Bush managed to achieve complete autonomy in album production. She is a hugely respected artist in the UK and it is wonderful that a new audience is appreciating her music.
Running up the hill was used during an episode of Doctor Who, when David Tennant portrayed the doctor during a very traumatic scene between him and the master
Great video! As a bass aficionado, I immediately noticed the theme from Phillip Glass's 'Koyaanisqatsi" in this season, though it was also featured in the last season as well. No basso profondo on the soundtrack, but I'd recognize those organ arpeggi anywhere.
I had the same reaction hearing it! The hook sounded super familiar, and then I knew the melody line. My parents run a music store though so its pretty likely I just heard it through the course of the day, maybe someone learning it in a lesson room. Dunno!
Or maybe you have fallen under the spell of Kathy's unique blend of eroticism and Celtic mysticism, with just a dash of witchcraft! ruclips.net/video/B6mTxSqo7iI/видео.html
I paused the video at 1:00 to leave my comment before contining on. The band Placebo did a version that was featured on the TV series "Bones". S02E11 - Judas on a Pole. You can hear it towards the end of the episode. It wasn't until many years later I learned it was a cover. It was also used on the 4th season opener of the TV series "The O.C.", which I never saw. Both episodes, confidentially, aired in last two months of 2006.
The song is actually about a woman who wants to swap bodies with her lover so as to allow him to experience their relationship from her perspective ("come on baby, come on darling, let's exchange the experience"). Hence the dance at the beginning of the music video representing lovemaking, with the initial lyrics "It doesn't hurt me, do want to feel how it feels, do you want to know it doesn't hurt me ..." I wonder if you really understand that "Running" is very much the mainstream side of Kate Bush. If you want to see her hardcore alternative side, I recommend this performance from Kate's 1979 Christmas Species on U.K. TV! ruclips.net/video/B6mTxSqo7iI/видео.html You might need therapy after watching this! :)
A symbiotic relationship with lyrics and music is ALWAYS there with her music. That's the main characteristic imo. She does This in different ways, but it's always there, the music always supports the lyrics
You might have heard the cover that Meg Myers did of running up that hill. It came out relatively recently and has been on various streaming platforms as well as the radio. That's my guess as to why you'd heard it somewhat recently. With that said I've been a Kate Bush fan since I was a young kid. You should check out her Red Shoes album. It's really good.
Since I have known this song from the day of its release, it is just a joy to witness others appreciate the magical art of Kate Bush. I hope you will dive deeper into her vast material. No song is like the other when it comes to Kate. Enjoy if you do!
Kate Bush had a weird resurgence of popularity around 2018 when "Wuthering Heights" became a ticktock meme. Idk if they did a remaster to compliment the popularity, to keep ownership of that album/catalogue. But it's likely you heard "running up that hill" before the 20's either from ticktock or the radio cashing in on the ticktock meme. My gf at the time did a few wuthering heiths memes and showed me dozens of ones made by amatures. At the time I thought Kate bush was new because they didn't talk about her on VHS I love the 80s. It's kinda weird Kate Bush and her songs are becoming iconic of an 80s soundscape even though you wouldn't have heard her on the radio as much as you would have heard Cyndi Lauper other pop acts
I was a teenager when Running Up That Hill was released. It was a hell of a sonic experience, it sounded like it was coming from another planet. In a way it still sounds like this today. And just for the record, it was a big hit in 1985, it went to No#3 in UK and top5 to many other countries, the video was playing many times every day to the MTV. It was only in USA where she didn't get airplay and so she was categorized as obscure, uncommercial etc. Lliving in Europe, I can assure you that Kate Bush was always a big thing over here, and when I say "big" I don't mean it in a Madonna or Michael Jackson way, she was one of the favorite artists for the music lovers, the people who were buying a lot of records, not just listening to the radio hits. She was never the kind of artist that you have only one of her albums (well maybe "Hounds of Love" is an exeption because it was massive), usually you went out and buy all of her albums, no matter from which one you got originally hooked. In a way she has created her own music universe, one that is difficult to compare with any genre or music trent. She was doing her own thing without paying much attention to what is hot right now, somehow she was always out of time, in her own world. When she recorded "Hounds of Love" (the album that includes Running Up That Hill) she wanted to prove to the record company that she is able to make hit singles, because her previous album was very weird, without any major hits and EMI was very worried that Kate is not commercial anymore. So when she proved to them that she can make hit singles, she never bothered again to aim for chart success and she did her stuff with total peace of mind. If you get the impression that Kate is some kind of fairy, you are wrong - she is a very strong, grounded person and knows the music industry inside out. Thats why she played the industry's game for a short time, until she was fully aware of how she wants to navigate her career. She is incredibly sensitive when it comes to her Art, but fierce like hell when she is negotiating her business. And huge respect for keeping her private life totaly private, even if this fact gave her the ''recluse'' tag, which is bullshit, she just doesn't like to have paparazzi around her and she prefers to live her life normaly, with her family and close friends.
Yes, that is exactly how I would describe her. She so earned the respect she has been given through the decades. I do not know of any artist who was so serious about the value of their work and stood for it, like Kate did for each piece she wrote, composed, produced and released by her own label. I keep raising my hat.
I've been a huge fan of Kate since I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978 (I was 18 years old), and she completely mesmerized me. Kate Bush is a one-of-a-kind musical and artistic genius and I'm delighted that a new generation is now discovering her brilliance. I encourage new fans to continue to explore her rich back catalog (10 albums, a nearly 3 hour live set from concerts in 2014, and 25 Top 40 singles) - she has many masterpieces and no two songs sound the same.
UK used Running Up That Hill for Olympics closing. Placebo covered it, was on another TV show. Kate used a Fairlight synthesizer. She was just ahead of her Time. My favorite.
I had heard the song before but never the intro. When I first heard the intro in the show I thought maybe they hired Marshmello to make some 80's beats but it still had his synth style (don't know if it really is a sound from a synth) but then realized the OG song starts that way lol Perfect song for that scene and perfect scene for that show. Might be my favorite scene from the whole show so far just because of all the hidden meanings.
i had the same reaction to the beginning of the refrain. i thought i remembered a male voice basically speak-singing this, slower and obviously lower. turns out i googled and found the cover of running up that hill by placebo. And that song still gets used in everything. it was in pretty little liars, how to get away with murder, vampire diaries, Bones, NCIS...
Hey man I’ve been watching your sub harmonics videos for some time now and would love to see a reaction/review of Payton Parrish - For Honor just to hear your break down of his vocals
To answer your question about having heard the song recently, it’s been all over TikTok recently, typically unconnected to stranger things. That also explains it topping charts recently because plays of it as TikTok audio count towards that
I didn't even know it was popular, It was part of my mom's favorite cleaning up sound track when I was a kid so I basically grew up on it.. I didn't watch stranger things so I didn't even know it had a renaissance, basically you're the one making me remember it
Bruh, everything you said, I was just like... "forreal" *Edit- except for when after I typed the above comment and you started getting all technical at the end of the video. Then I was lost lol.
I remember this coming out first time (in the UK). No1 was UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with a version of "I got you babe", it was cute at the time but really has not stood the test of time that well. no#2 was Madonna with "Into the groove" Also on the top 40 was Billy Idol White Wedding, Dire Striates with Money for nothing, The Cure with inbetween days.
It's crazy how popular songs back then can be revived within a scene of a show/movie. People that work on those must have good taste.

I first heard this song 35 years ago. Yes, I'm old. But it's nice to see it coming back. And yes, We did have good music way back then.

I was a teen in the 80s and remembered the song when I heard a cover in Warehouse 13 episode s3 ep11 Emily Lake. So good.

There was a pretty popular alternative cover of it a few years back from Meg Myers, probably what most people remember it from today in pop culture
I paused the video at 1:00 to leave my comment before contining on.

01:00 Answer: Placebo

Why would she sing with an American accent when she is English?
david can you see my comment? 👀

No way. I was listening to this song 5 minutes ago
I knew the song from The OC. Admittedly not the original but a cover by Placebo, still good though!
Its amazing that this song doesn't sound dated.

It was used at the end of an episode of GLOW on S2 .....maybe that's where you heard it ???
Your brief rendition of the song made me think of "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons but I doubt that's what you had in mind lmao
I know the song from Placebo and I just realised it was a cover :)
wow I'm actually fairly early to one of your videos, being the *second* comment here lol
Maybe because you are a choir acapella type of guy you could hear the acapella Cover from Club for five
Lana del rey did a recent cover, thats where I first heard the song, about a year ago
Kate Bush is a genius. That's all there is to it.
What does this guys feet taste like 🤔
I love how unnecessarily detailed and thought out this was.
I remember this coming out first time (in the UK).
No1 was UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with a version of "I got you babe", it was cute at the time but really has not stood the test of time that well.
no#2 was Madonna with "Into the groove"
Also on the top 40 was Billy Idol White Wedding, Dire Striates with Money for nothing, The Cure with inbetween days.
i think abel somehow sampled parts of it? both have the word hills in their titles, so i guess he's somehow giving credit
Alan Partridge!
Kate Bush Medely
I don't watch this show, but I've enjoyed this song since the 90s.
4:41 shoulda said gaudy ;)
The best version I think is by Meg Myers.. even the music video hits different 😍
Yes, I can see why her version would appeal more commercially, in America.
The best version will always be by the person who wrote and created the song 😂
