  • Let me explain a bit more about this video:
Welcome to the game of Smash or Pass the Mystery Mould edition!
Smash or Pass is a game where you make a yes or no decision on an object, person, or thing by using the word 'smash' or 'pass'. The game is typically played with 'smash' meaning yeah that's good and 'pass' meaning I will pass on that. However, as we smash the things we don't like in pottery and pass the things on that we do, I will be playing it the other way.
SMASH= The piece is not good and will not be going to the next stages. The piece will be smashed hehe not like the usual way.
CAST= it's good and I will take it to the next steps.
If you have been a long time follower you will know that I have my Mystery Mould series where I unveil these moulds one at a time and decorate them. The pieces that pass this game will feature in the series when I start it up again. The smashes will not but this video series gives me an opportunity to clear out some moulds that won't fit in my new studio or maybe aren't the best for the series. Some are seriously cursed!
But wait, won't it spoil the mystery?
Yes and No! The mystery mould series will return but will have a mix of pieces from this series as well as some picked randomly like normal. By the time I get to them, I think you will either have forgotten about the piece or be super eager to see how it comes to life in the series. I am actually excited to hear your ideas on the ones we do pass on to the series as I may be able to implement them into the video and the design of the artwork. I am excited for the debates and discussions about whether I made the right decision for each mould. I am also excited to cull some moulds so I have less to move when I get the shelves for my new space.
Wait, are you smashing the moulds??
Ok, not smashing the moulds! I am smashing the cast it makes inside. I will clean the moulds up and find new homes for them that will appreciate them. AS much as I can see potential in all the moulds, I do want to focus on the ones that spark the most inspiration, have the grooviest of ideas and can be shaped and crafted in new ways. The smashed moulds are great but great for someone else who they are a better fit for. I will share details where you can get these moulds very soon.
    Are you ready to play?
I will be sharing a poll after each episode over on Instagram. If you think I made the wrong decision on the pieces, come over and vote. I may bring something back if you vote for it back!

My grandmother had round ones with ribbons and she filled them with fresh cedar shavings and lavender and mint to hang in her closet or tuck into drawers. She said the cedar and mint and lavender keeps moths away from your wool/cashmere clothing and it makes your "unmentionable" fresh 😅

Or rubber cork. They do need holes. I didn't see any. Some are left unsealed and aroma works thru the clay or ceramic.

Honestly it makes sense based on what they knew then. They had figured out that you could get sick from just the "bad air" and no other exposure, they just didn't know it was microscopic viruses in the "bad air" that were the culprit

And that's why they invented plague masks and stuffed the nose/beak with strongly smelling things. Turns out it was wearing a mask that stopped them from getting the plague not the smelly things inside, but it worked I guess.

The pomanders - I have one at home that's made of terracotta. It has a smaller hole in the back with a plug. I pour lavender oil in it. It has a string threaded through the top and hangs from my bed. Because it's terracotta and has no holes it slowly releases the smell of lavender above my bed. Super cosy!

Tip for the Pomander. You can fill them with cotton balls and put essential oils or perfume on the cotton. You can also fill them with dryer beads (not sure if y'all have those in Australia). Growing up we always had them in our closets and drawers.

Sometimes those Pomander things come with a hook to put on radiators, the hook goes in the hole at the back, you pop a little bit of essential oil in and the heat from the radiator warms it up, makes the room smell lovely.

The plant pot is meant to simulate a wine barrel planter. I agree the design is ‘too set’ for your creative side. I encourage you to gather ALL the dolls, pour just the heads and sort them out to others. However if you find a pretty face, attach it to a simple pot as a planter. Look up Lady Head Vases as a reference. Cheers from the Midwest USA.

I remember seeing these types of pomanders in the 80s . My memory of this type ,they were filled with lavender and sealed with toule (netting that they use in weddings) . The easiest way would be to cut a square of toule ,put a couple of spoonfuls of lavender, tie with a thin inexpensive ribbon to make a little bundle. Then just stuff in the hole of the pomander. It will have to be big enough to be snug and not fall out. These are very easy to make. You would poke a small hole to be able to put ribbon through to hang up in closet,in a car etc. Or just put in your drawers with your clothing. You could also just paint and hang as an ornament for Easter etc. and leave empty just as a decoration.😊

We used to have these when we were little (Adelaide and Country SA - Eyre Peninsula). My mum & Grandmother used to fill them with Potpourri for in your 'delicates' draw.
They would put 'mothballs' (camphor) or cedarwood in one, that's like your long term storage cupboards (like winter sheets & blankets, winter coats etc).
Pretty sure we had some in the farm pantry too, but we had stuff that keeps away weevils & mice (so like fresh Bay leaves & dried Peppermint, probably with cedarwood/ camphor too.
They'd have like one of this little rubber or plastic plugs like a a money bank has.
As a fun modern idea you could try leaving some porous & essential oils could be poured on them like those ceramic flower diffusers, or an interesting incense holder. Another idea is you could use them as a little piggy bank or tooth holder for little kids (like the pie one, could be made to look more like a 'pillow'). Another idea is a twist on those hard Sugar /candy Easter Eggs, but obviously ceramic, but you could put a few little easter eggs or boiled sweets in 🤷‍♀️.
    They're cool, good memories ♡
Ironically we had a shell also, in the late 80's, early 90's, my grandma put those little spheres of bubblebath in the shells to look like pearls, so the grandkids could have fun baths.

that shell would make an interesting trinket tray, or somewhere to place your loose change. wonder how that second one would go as a bottle topper head. the 3rd pour, pomander, we use some filled with lavender and others filled with camphor hanging in our wardrobes. as for the final pour, as much as i love unusual pots, that just doesn't float my boat either.

For the pomanders, if you poke a hole in one end, you could put in a knotted ribbon so you could hang it up. They could be ornaments for a tree as well, or just hang from a hanger in your closet or room. As others have said, you’d fill them with a net bag or pouch with essential oils on potpourri or cotton balls for scent. You could also put mothballs in them to keep bugs away. That’s the only kind of infection I think they would truly ward off. :)

Hello Shelby. I had a rough day and watching you made me lighten up. The pomanders can be left in bisque. The clay absorbs the sent. It can also be glazed with holes for potpourri. Oils in the bisque will penetrate the clay so it can only be used for one sent unless you want to mix sents. Love the shell, very nice with possible sea creatures painted on it or find a small a small fish or mermaid to sit on the shell. Many possibilities. Keep up the great work. But im so overinvested in these doll molds now, I'm dying for you to find a doll maker and do a joint craft episode where you cast em and they craft em. And then you give all of the doll molds to them when they leave the studio! Put the dolls to rest Shelby! Put them to reeeeeest!
Also, you cpuld use the pomanders for easter decorations. And you could use the plant pot to cast the butterflies, cut them out, and recycle the rest.

The first one: It needs to be reconditioned with release agent of sorts... maybe a little mold TLC but it looks like it is in great condition even as a standalone it looks good.
The Second one: The doll ones can probably be marionettes as well there use to be a time when the puppets in Europe were a fashion statement because it became a thing. so giving the molds to a doll maker is a wonderful idea they would know some people so do be open about just wanting the molds to find good homes.
The third one: Some of these Edwardian/Victorian century things are just wonderful they really put attention into small details so even the work belts were a art piece. I can see them being wonderful ordainments.
The forth one: It does look like it need to be cast thicker nit its a cute wooden bucket design plant pot I'm sure it will find a good home. If I had more funds and was able to do this because of all the greenhouses in my area I would likely be intrigued to get the planter for the sake of a business, However my side of the world is having a identy issues in the making for 60+ years so I am stuck with the "its the next generations problems" literally screwing over my ability to even hold a job. your series has at the very least been a much needed small escape from the madness.

While I think ‘smash or cast’ is a fun premise and I have been watching mystery molds since #1, I think it might benefit you (and your business) to go through all the molds and catalog them. Especially the biggest ones because, if you are going to sell or gift them to another potter, you could go ahead and do that as they are taking up valuable space you could be using. Plus, there may be something in your stash that you could start casting for your business. Having said all that, if it’s working for you then keep on keepin’ on! Maybe with the doll moulds you could use the heads as nobs for drawers.

That "belt" detail is supposed to represent a cast iron/metal strap. You know the kind found on real wood planters or barrels.

On the flower pot, the lines are wood grain and the texture on the rim is to look like a pounded metal band and the round bumps are metal rivets.

I think they were going for a wood texture for the pot and a hammered metal band around the top with metal rivets. I can't wait to see what you make with the ones you've kept.

Here in England when we learned about Tudor and Medieval era we would visit historic landmarks from that time, dress up and then we made the oranges with cloves, it goes a long way back in our history. The Victorians loved ceramic or bagged pomanders and even now people still use them for freshness and to help with certain ailments.

The band around the top of the plant pot is a barrel band usually made of brass with rivets in steel

We had pomanders growing up. It was fired and not glazed or if glazed then there were little holes in the top. Then stuffed with dried herbs and essential oil. Closed with a wooden plug of cork

Shelby Pomanders can be filled with lavender, rose petals or pot pourri scented with essential oils. They can be sealed with a cork or a sticker to cover the hole. The dots on the butterfly wings would be the holes for that piece unsure about the others

I remember my grandma and other old ladies/aunts having really pretty ceramic pomanders (I didn’t know that’s what they were called) filled with potpourri of some sort hanging in their houses, especially bathrooms.

I have some vintage pomanders, and they had the lavender wrapped in a cheesecloth inside, and just a pretty sticker on the hole to seal it.

Pomanders are very cool. I have a block off soap in my sock drawer to keep them from smelling musty. These are way nicer!!

I have painted the flower pot! albeit mine is smaller ( I realize it shrinks at first firing) , probably half that size. I have had an African Violet in it on my bathroom window sill since I painted and fired it around 22yrs ago. It was a bit involved to paint the background around the butterfly but I still think it’s cute. ❤ from Texas!

You need to find a doll maker to colab with. The horse one I wasn't so keen on but the mouse is adorable. The pomander can be filled with dried herbs or spices in a little cloth bag if you don't have a cork for the back or if you want to put something in it that could be to fine and fall out the holes

those heads on the doll casts could maybe be cool wine bottle stoppers. Just saying, if you could attach them to corks would be cool and cute.

The pomanders can be turned into trinket boxes. Close the opening to make a base. Cut along the seem down the side. Add an inner lip on top portion to keep it from sliding around. Be super cute. Especially with the whimsy style.

The plant pot is trying to be a faux wood with a brass strapping and studs at the top. Give it another chance. I have made many "doll" and "humanized" animals and they are fun to make. you can make them either "humanized" with added clothing or more to the animal they depict by using faux fur for the body. A tip for using faux fur. Glaze the pottery parts AFTER you have chosen the fabric so they match as far as possible. Love to all, Auntie Joolz.

Maybe you could get her to cast and do an initial firing on it for you, before she sells it elsewhere? That way you could paint them and assemble them into a doll without needing the kiln :)

Leaves and bits can be put into a small net bag and put inside the pomander. You don't need to put a covering over the hole that way. The one that you smashed could be done as a quilted type one with some of your flowers on it. The flower pot is a wood barrel. The top is a metal band.

Basketweave pomander- basketweave can be cut out like a lattice top on a pie with an exacto knife. You can make little net tulle bags or muslim bags to put potpourri in them then stuff them in the back where the back hole is in the pomander. They can go in your dresser drawers or hung in your closet as well to make areas smell nice. Cant wait to see what you do with them!

Idea for the doll heads:put them on a plaque like faux taxidermy. I saw ceramic animal heads done like this in a shop called the imaginarium in York, UK and they looked whimsical and awesome.

  • @RavenAttwoode

The pomanders that you have there were filled with potpourri and left in drawers, or some had holes for a ribbon and would be hung in closets. Basically a fancy, refillable sachet 🙂
Cork is how you close the back.

In 2nd grade, the class trip was a field trip to a 1 room schoolhouse. (It was a Laura Ingells Wilder location.) We had to dress like students from the late 1800s and our lunches were in pails.
Your trip sounds like more fun. We still had regular classes but on slate tablets.

Those Pomanders can be filled with pre-made potpourri and closed with a large cork. You want to be able to change out the contents when it loses its fragrance. The little pie piece could be filled with baking soda and put in the fridge to keep it smelling fresh.
