    I hate it when Americans say that they "beat the British" when the people that won independence were also british

    • @LordranRavin
      @LordranRavin 7 месяцев назад +289

      Innit, the war of independence was a bunch of disgruntled Brits fighting Britain while being bankrolled by the French and the war was only really won because Britain had 1000s of other things to do as well as fight the French. The US exists because Britain made too many enemies while being stretched too thin. It was mitigating circumstances that 'won' the war for independence, not Americans (they didn't exist yet)

    • @another3997
      @another3997 7 месяцев назад +154

      The reason they managed to beat the British was because, in part, many of those leading the American militia were actually trained by the British in military tactics. Therefore they knew what to expect. Americans forget that Britain is a tiny little island on the other side of the world. We had to send our forces and supplies by ship half way across the globe to fight. And then there is the small matter of the French, who took great delight in providing arms and mercenaries to America. Americans don't like to admit they had help and already had huge numeric and geographic advantages. 😂

    About Eurovision :
    1. Australia, Israel or Morocco are (or were) part of Eurovision because Eurovision is not strictly for European countries, it never was a rule
    It's for countries that belong to European Broadcasting Area ruled by EBU and they decide if you can compete or not
    Israel and Morocco belong to that area (you can look up the map if you want to see how big it is) while Australia doesn't, but Australia got to compete in a different way : by an invitation
    2. Eurovision was big in Australia and was televised there since 1980s (because Australian culture always was heavily influenced by UK), so in 2015 for 60th anniversary of the contest EBU invited them once, but they made such an impression (I think they were 5th) that EBU got them a deal to participate until 2023
    So the deal ended last year, but they made a new one and Australia will probably remain in Eurovision for some time (their best result is 2nd place in 2016)
    3. USA never joined Eurovision, because unlike Australia, there is very little interest in Eurovision there, most people don't even know it exists + American Song Contest failed miserably
    4. I highly doubt that USA would have any chance at winning Eurovision, because 1 - Flo Rida participated once as featuring act in San Marino's song in 2021 and hype was really big, but they ended up in the bottom of the final and 2 - not many people in Europe would vote for USA because we don't want the contest to be held there (winner hosts the next contest) and we just don't want them to win an European contest

      Reason why there are so many large 4x4's, SUV's etc. in the US, is because that vehicles classified as a semi-truck or larger, are subject to fewer regulations / taxes, so they buy them to save cash on the car itself, not realising that it guzzles a lot more fuel in the long term. Can't even make this up. I understand if they live in rural areas you might need the extra power or flatbed, but for city driving it makes zero sense.

A friend of mine is Finnish with a very Finnish name and when she moved to Spain, she took up the Spanish name "Renata". Her real first name was almost impossible to pronounce for the locals, so she had to find a solution.
    Other than that, think of all the East Asians that take Western first names to make it easier for Westerners. Some of my Chinese colleagues run with names like Lilian, Frank, Nina or Lili, because those are easier for us to pronounce than, say, Jianxia or Xiaozhang.

    As an Australian, I'm fucking disgusted by that post about how many wars Australia has won. Does this person know about Gallipolli? Every Australian child learns about it early, and for those who don't know, basically, British officers (no hate) mucked around and wasted Australian lives defending the trenches, while they wasted time instead of getting to the trenches as soon as they could for reinforcements. Then, we were forced to charge into heavy machine gun fir to provide cover for a British offensive that failed. In the end, Aussie ingenuity allowed them to escape, by rigging guns to cans of soup with water dripping into them, which kept the guns shooting for a few more hours so they could escape. It is a day of national commemoration and remembrance, akin to Memorial Day in the US. That was WWI, and in WWII we were the main forces fighting against the Japanese, and were excellent battle engineers, actually fucking digging UNDERNEATH the enemy to plant bombs and destroy enemy positions. If you think Australia has never won a war or saved people from speaking Japanese or German, you know nothing about Australia. Anyway, it's not about "saving" people from speaking Japanese or German. It doesn't matter what language you speak. What we were doing though, was saving people from oppressive tyranny and fascism. I am Norwegian, have always loved Eurovision (boycotted this year, though, for obvious reasons), and all we heard about it, really, was that it was a trial thing one year, because Australia really loves Eurovision, so they were allowed to compete once as a kind gesture, and if they did WELL, they'd be allowed to compete again the next year, and become a regular.

I suppose it's up to them as it's their country but foreigners need to be warned. Make sure you know the right time. 5:53 they could actually request an Italian passport and get the double citizenship, considering they have an Italian mother, they’re definitely eligible. I think because it’s the one of the parents they don’t even have to do a test or similar, just compile a bunch of documents (in italian) and then they can even vote in Italian elections.
    So it’s actually silly gatekeeping them and claim they’re not Italian as they literally have to do the bare minimum, especially compared to the usual American “I’m 1 and 3 quarters of this and 7 tenths of that”.
