The Truth About Paint Protection Film

  • Here is a pop quiz. What is the link between helicopter blades from the Vietnam War area and today's modern automotive paint protection world? The answer is paint protection film or PPF as most of us know it. This modern, lightweight polyurethane-inspired material was initially developed as a military solution to protect rotor blades on helicopters in the late 1960s.
    But like all great inventions, crafty engineers found a way to expand its use, which found a home in the automotive space not too long ago. A paint protection film can be applied to nearly every part of your car's exterior - even headlight covers. It helps to protect the surface from scratching, rock chips, and chemical exposure. It's incredibly durable, and some advanced PPF materials can even heal small scratches in a matter of seconds.
    There is a lot to love about paint protection films - but also some things to carefully consider. This is what we'll explain in today's Ceramic Pro video. Our host Adam Cote is going to get technical and scientific about paint protection film. If you watch the video and are really looking to expand your knowledge, take some time to read our detailed blog on the subject by clicking this link.

    I am considering Kavaca ppf for dodge charger widebody. The car's paint is very glossy naturally so if I put regular kavaca and/or ceramic pro 9h it will be mirror-like which I think will be a bit too over the top for my preference. My question is if I did a full wrap of kavaca matte would a layer of pro 9h on top give an in-between satin/gloss effect? Or is the pro 9h strong enough to make it super glossy even on top of kavaca matte?

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  2 года назад +1

      Hey Kyle, our KAVACA Matte PPF will make the finish matte, and even if 9h is applied it may darken the matte finish very slightly but not enough to change the appearance to what you are asking. If you want to keep the gloss finish and enhance the current gloss finish, we have KAVACA Ceramic Coated which comes with our Ceramic Pro coatings built into the finish.

    How about the cons, like:
    -how long does it actually last?
    -how does it impact the paint under it over time?
    -How often does it have to be replaced and how easy is it to do so (everything gets old and brittle)?

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  2 года назад +6

      Hey Kevin, great questions.
      PPF technology has greatly changed in the last few years. Our PPF has a 12-year warranty.
      The paint isn't impacted in any way other than some adhesive that may be leftover which is easily removed. It doesn't need to be replaced unless the vehicle has a major impact or is in an accident.

    • @kevinniyoyitungira5375
      @kevinniyoyitungira5375 2 года назад

      @@CeramicPROUSA Oh ok, thanks for your clarification. So that means the film would need to be replaced every 12 years or so.
      Just a lil technical question, so whenever you're putting on or replace the film, do you wax the car beforehand to keep the paint underneath supple (not dry out and crack)? Or does the film just keep the paint in pristine condition for years and years...

      Heat from direct sunlight and constant UV exposure will not remove the film or cause it to come off from your vehicle as our products are tested in extreme environments (places like Dubai & Arizona). That being said, if the PPF film is ever needed to be remove due to an accident, they will lift an edge and instead of yanking the film off from the paint, a method that is used to remove it easier and to separate the adhesive from the paint is hot steam (heat being applied while the film is slowly peeled off to ensure no damage is done to the vehicles paint and no adhesives are left behind)

    I have seen horror cases where the PPF bonded with the paint so much that pulling the old PPF would pull some of the paint with it. You'd be looking at potential expense repaint of the entire car. Is that still a valid concern?

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  3 года назад +13

      Hey Nhat, so there are methods to removing the ppf that won't lift paint. Also, if the vehicle has been repainted the chances of this occurring is much higher. Older ppf didnt have the adhesive it has today, so many cheaper clear bra options 10 years ago would be a pain to remove but any of the newer PPF's dont have that issue.

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  2 года назад

      @@L3x4Pr0ne No it will not. Sometimes some adhesive may be left behind depending on the ppf being used but that is easily removed. The only time it can damage paint is if the vehicle has been repainted poorly and it may pull paint if that is the case. However, most shops are very diligent about this and even repainted vehicles, if known beforehand shouldn't pull paint if removed with heat.

    I wonder , with these paint wrap films , ceramic coatings etc, and PPF films available now a days, can we avoid the painting of the car bodies and use only a surface coatings like CED in the car companies, that will reduce the cost of the car too much as half the paint shop is gone, no more robots, curing ovens etc. and you have colour choices at your doorstep.

      Unfortunately auto manufacturers are cutting corners now more than ever and anything that can delay the process of production such as ppf install or ceramic coatings will not be in their best interest. What will be interesting to see is how tesla plans to handle the cybertruck as vehicle need to have a painted color by law and rumors say that they may be moving forward with wrapping them in house.

    PPF is too expensive for your average car. Front end PPF installs run $2k-3k. That’s upwards of 10% of a new car value just to have your bumper and hood protected. Whole car you’re looking at over $6k minimum. You can have your bumper and hood painted for less than $2k. Only realistic and feasible protection is for super cars, or vehicles over $100k, then the price value ratio is more in the car owners favor. It’s just not worth the price, hopefully someone will come in and drastically reduce PPF costs.

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  2 года назад +2

      Hey Tio, a good quality front end paint job ranges around 2k-4k and a lot of the times depending on the paint, it will never match the same nor will the bumpers/trims etc match up like they did day 1. PPF is a more expensive option but for many, its the best solution and offers many other benefits such as scratch protection and making the vehicle look new always. Pesky rock chips on a brand new vehicle are never appealing to look at and we also offer ceramic pro coatings which is another great option at a lower price point. The average cost of a vehicle that gets a full front ppf is around 50-60k.

    Why don't you quote the cost and install charges in your videos?

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  Год назад +1

      Biggest reason is there are too many options to give an accurate estimate. For Example, we offer Ceramic Coatings, Paint Protection Film, and Window Tint which all come with different prep, different price points, and based on vehicle size will vary on cost based on the amount of material needed. However, what we have done extremely well to combat this is to connect you directly with our Ceramic Pro Shops to receive a Free Quote or Estimate from them. Visit: ceramicpro.com

    If it were needed. Why wouldn't the manufacturers use it?

    • @CeramicPROUSA
      @CeramicPROUSA  3 года назад

      Most manufacturers do offer PPF when you order the vehicle these days. However, they do a poor job of installation, and the film that is used isn't of great quality so it will crack, yellow, and age poorly over time.
