Nattuvangam is a very important aspect of Bharatanatyam music where the Gurus/ Nattuvanars play it to give rhythm to the dancing. It is a Tamil word - Natta + Angam. Natta means dancer or Dance Performance and Angam means body or main operating or controlling centre. The combination of this two is called Nattuvangam.
The initial part of Nattuvangam is Tattakali - a wooden plank and stick. A bharatanatyam disciple after many years of learning dance get to learn first to play rhythm on this instrument and later when they graduate into senior dancers, they get to learn the Nattuvangam Talam, two metal cymbals one Iron and other one made of brass.
Glimpses from the very first few lessons of Tatta Kali , learning to play rhythm for the Adavus (steps) and Nritta (pure dance) pieces at Devmudraa a movement school, Aurangabad
The above video is from a classroom, please do not expect perfection. We are sharing the teaching and learning process.
