After their 2-0 over Real in MD04, Bayern seemed clicking on all levels, in the hard-knock land of SL1, that only helped them rise to #7, but there was little doubt as to the Bayern’s ability to seriously contend. Since then 0-1 to Atletico and a 1-1 last week against Lazio has brought that previous belief into question and should there be a failure today against Napoli, it will be another step into the darkness.
The early stages were terrifying, it was Napoli, in Bayern’s home, almost completely dictating the affair through the half-hour mark. Bayern had two chances, Gnabry off the post in the 12th and Hernandez’s header, which was solid, but right at GK Meret. Napoli at 30 minutes had 7/4 shots and a possession edge of 57/43, all that advantage culminated in Lorenzo Insigne’s 1st goal of the season, a whirlwind volley screeching to the far corner, 1-0 Napoli, to a stunned crowd and Bayern apparently.
Napoli will be kicking themselves for not adding to it while their dominant run continued as the first half came to an end. There were several quality attempts, however GK Neuer was able to deny them all.
The 2nd half was a different story, largely an even contest with a slight edge to Bayern. The equalizer came in the 77th, Leroy Sane headed in Kingsley Coman’s ideally placed cross having to fend off Meret and Nerez in the process.
Not much to report down the stretch, a few shots and some required saves, but nothing so quality it was expected to go in. Maybe it isn’t a dumpster fire, but this result really stinks for Bayern. Napoli aren’t toothless, but came in struggling badly, a good team prolongs their hardship, not become its remedy.
Napoli too can lament their inability to put this match away when the opportunity existed. They seemed too timid to go for the 2nd even as Bayern gave them every invitation. Still they will take the point and hope to build on it.
