Lunges and Perception Time

  • Most fencers are familiar with the idea that the arm should lead the lunge. This video is intended to demonstrate some of the reasons why.
    1. The overall time taken for a lunge when the arm leads is about the same as one where the body leads. The point makes contact sooner when the arm leads though.
    2. When the arm leads the lunge, it takes slightly longer for the opponent to perceive the attack and begin to respond, making it more difficult to parry.
    3. Likewise, it is more difficult to counterattack when the arm leads the lunge correctly.
