Safari Rally: Focus WRC vs Puma Rally 1 Car with Nicky Grist & Malcolm Wilson at M-Sport HQ

- Ahead of WRC Safari Rally Kenya 2024, Nicky Grist took a visit to his old pal Malcolm Wilson up at M-Sport HQ to reminisce on this time 25 years ago - when Colin McRae & Nicky Grist clenched the first EVER win for the Ford Focus WRC at Safari Rally Kenya.
Nicky even got his first ever experience of sitting in the Puma Rally1 car with WRC driver Gregoire Munster, and shares his thoughts on comparing this new piece of machinery to what he and Colin used back in the 1999 World Rally Championship.

We need more of this Nicky, getting out and about visiting Teams etc, you could link up with your other drivers and would also like to see you visit some of the current drivers, really enjoyed it, and just to add, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody so relaxed in the co drivers seat, you’d have thought Gregoire was out for a Sunday drive 😀

I'm loving your content mister Grist! Every video feels like a Christmas present, with anecdotes from the past and your interesting guests. It's something I feel I can't hear enough from. It's like having a door opened into the wonderous world of rallying, both past and present. A world which has stolen my heart ever since visiting a local rally event in the 90s when I was but a tiny lad. The concept of this vid is spot on, bit of onsite chat with the team principle then a blast in the car, haven't been to M-Sport in bout 10 years so need another visit in my MK1 Focus RS to see all the new developments there, still remember where i was when i was told the news of Colin, and the display of his career at the NEC in 2008 was so emotional, he lived and died on the edge #legendofaman
Still the proud owner of focus Mk1, 1998 year model, and still nothing replaced on the drive train, toughest car ever, and still puts smile on my face driving it on open roads

Here i wished you could've explained us more about the 99 car for example. I remember back then you used safari special cars so for example you could tell us more about all the changes that car had compared to the base 99 rally car.. Also i'll like to know how it was racing on OPEN ROADS!. INSANE

Nicky, you have tremendous respect and passion for Rallying that you would have access to some awesome machinery and talented people within the sport. And you can portray that very well. Just tell the stories of our sport. I personally struggle to keep up with what’s happening in the UK these days (I live in Western Australia) and have an AbsoluteRally shaped hole in my life. I’d love to see more content on the BRC and Irish Rallying.

I always liked the Focus. The times when you and Colin were sending it I was working for a Ford dealership and we had photos and posters of this car hanging everywhere, and there were several customers that chose a ST170 because of the rally heritage, while their wives would've been satisfied with an ordinary 1.6 😄

Great stuff! I like to hear your perspectives on rallying and esp your experiences from the past. Like changing from Subaru to Ford. Did you ever get the same vibe in the car? It seemed from the outside that you performed the best at Subaru. And about the Citroen adventure that didnt go to plan. I had a feeling that you could have been a good help for Colin that seemed kind of lost there.

Brilliant Nicky! You looked a tad concerned inside that car? Understanibly so, considering todays pace of WRC1. Don't you think they have gone too far in WRC1? There would be more manufacturer involvement if it was a bit simpler and less costly - WR2+ type car maybe? Anyhow, very nostalgic also, comparing your win with Colin on the Safari all those years ago. Keep them coming!

I really loved this video, it was quite interesting to hear the perspective of somebody from the old days on the new rally cars of today. One interesting comparison would be between the 2017 wrc cars and the new rally 1 cars.
It is true...i was there when Mc Rae and Grist won the safari...it is a sad shadow of itself now. The only true test of man, machine and pure endurance in the WRC was hollowed out by the powers that be.
