Thab: "Maybe I should pursue a career as a train operator." Also Thab: "I tried as hard as I could to crash my train into a truck stopped on the railroad."
As a worker in the railroad industry, I have a few comments: 1) It's surprising how accurate the game is for a Nintendo 64 game. Train operations are definitely more complicated and have A LOT more intricacies, but in a simplified manner it's impressive. 2) Signaling & ATS has way more of an impact that you may realize. For most transit authorities, they designate tracks for a Normal & Reverse direction. When you had to stop for that train coming at you, that was because that train was diverted by the dispatcher/controller to go reverse running, usually due to a piece of track or a switch that's out of service or being maintained. ATS usually stands for "Automatic Train Stop" (which is why you'd stop automatically) but also has other meanings as well from authority to authority. 3) I hate crossings. There's so many nuances and safety items that go along with them. Sometimes they tie directly into if signals can clear. A train would never know if a car was stuck in the middle of a crossing unless it was magically radioed to him in enough time to stop. 4) You really don't want to be a train engineer/conductor. The hours are awful and you have to meet your times or you're yelled at by your supervisors. I've also heard horror stories from engineers of times when people who are either fouling or on the track as they're coming by. It's one job you just don't want.
@@terrywalters5835 I work in the USA. I don't work for a railroad anymore but for a contractor to railroads. Every city has different rules and issues with unions.
I think the coolest thing about this whole series is the dedication to finishing these random games. It showcases so many games no one has ever heard of. I'm definitely a fan of how much effort and perseverance is put towards each one. Great stuff!
12:24 Lol. ATS specifically exists to prevent those "massive explosion cutscenes". Both trains would automatically engage emergency brakes when they detect another train on the same stretch of tracks.
Japanese railways are actually a lot like that. Many now have gates on the platform, so the driver needs to stop within centimetres of the correct position! Arriving within a few seconds of the advertised time is expected too. It's amazing.
The Densha De Go series is absolutely underrated to the ground and probably one of the best Japanese rail simulators out there. Fun fact: It was originally an arcade game, but was eventually ported to the PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, and most recently the PS4/5.
I know of this game's existence for exactly one reason: Owning "Hey You Pikachu" as a kid, and as an adult, wondering one day if any other game used that N64 microphone. This is the only other one.
Union Pacific road name cap! I love it! Ya know, the 4014 big boy steam loco operates today which is a union Pacific exclusive! The big boy is the largest steam locomotive in history and is still in service today via the 4014. It played a big part in the war efforts in the 40's. I digress.. Great job Beast I love this series!
Really? I was sort of thinking the opposite and almost wanting the blurry graphics from the previous videos back... So many terrible artifacts.. At least it's better than the warping on the playstation 1.
That conductor outfit is snazzy as hell and I absolutely love the dedication not only to the challenge but also to adding those kinds of touches that make watching through the challenge so much fun. I'm so excited to see this challenge continue to unfold over the coming years.
How could you leave us hanging on the plot???? I have so many questions. Did he ever get the raise? Did he overcome all the odds, and get his family over to Japan as well? I guess I will just have to buy the game, controller, and conductor outfit to find out.
i saw this game on stream and it was very entertaining. the series is very entertaining too. very interessting controller and your outfit looks really good on you
Thab! Been to Japan many times -- really interesting to see your take on the Japanese rail network through your eyes. 1) I've never heard anyone reference the music in Japanese train stations -- nor have I noticed any. I wonder if you're referencing the train arrival and departure chimes - a lot of stations have their own themes/chimes: ruclips.net/video/nSG5IkRA9BE/видео.html 2) I'm sure you've heard this, but the Japanese are incredibly punctual and exact - moreso than any other country I've been to. While it's rare that trains will arrive on time to the *second* they are almost certainly arriving within 60 seconds of the scheduled time. Any delays beyond 60sec would be communicated by the line with an apology. 3) Snow is actually very common in parts of Japan. I know you are in West Virginia -- Japan's biggest island of Honshu (where Tokyo is) is actually at the same latitude line as WV! The island of Hokkaido (where Sapporo is) is actually north of your position right now! When I lived in Korea I found the climate to be pretty much in-line with what I grew up with in Ohio. The more you know! Love the series!
I love Densha De Go! I have all the games on the PS1 and PS2 and the DS game, along with a few of the controllers. It’s a deceptively addictive series.
The feeling of those perfect stops is so much better than it looks. Elite Dangerous is similar where you fly in space at like 5x the speed of light and need to go through a similarly long and unforgiving decelleration period whenever you want to land at a space station. Stopping is hard when you're moving fast and can't slam on the brakes!
At 7:29 ... More info on the Japanese Peso: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_government-issued_Philippine_peso ... Not sure if my math is correct, but Sergei would make about $1.35/hour in 2022 (including inflation... the Philippines Peso was 40.2600 in March 1998). Tough times for Sergei.
Definitely had to see this one after learning about that guy held 'voluntarily' captive and forced to live off of magazine sweepstakes. Apparently he won a copy of Densha de Go for PS1 and it took him several more months before he somehow won a TV, and even more months later, won a PS1. Apparently he played for 3 days straight and then vowed to never play it again because he needed to keep doing more sweepstakes.
Re: warm japan -- remember Japan is as tall latitudinally as the whole east coast of the USA. We've got tropical florida here just like tropical okinawa as well as snowy NY like hokkaido. Though the precipitation in Japan is much higher.
1:40 Why is the controller you have mirrored compared to the one in the picture? Oh. I see that in later shots, it appears normal. So it's probably that the camera image was flipped.
Fun fact: at least for freight trains, you are definitely under no obligation legally or by rule to avoid hitting vehicles or people in foul of the tracks at crossings etc. Obviously the engineer might want to avoid it, but dumping the train (max braking power) can cause you to derail which is not a risk worth taking. Stay off the tracks. By the time you know you’re gonna smash a car or something, it’s often too late to stop safely.
I hate that these games seems so fun, jp has tons of jp only arcade series which a lot seem to love but never gets release outside JP ... Great videos Beast ! i really enjoy this nostalgia trip.
oh my god the old timey train engineer outfit XD you probably would need the manual and a half-decent Japanese pronunciation to get the voice control to work.
Thab: "Maybe I should pursue a career as a train operator."
Also Thab: "I tried as hard as I could to crash my train into a truck stopped on the railroad."
I love the dedication to this game with the controller and the conductor outfit!
yep, it looks like he really had fun
Yes this is the best N64 video yet
It's not a conductor outfit, it's the locomotive driver outfit.

That smile when Thab wailed on the horn…I remember smiling like that for train whistles
I think the graphics looked truly awesome on this game! Way better than I would have ever expected on th N64 and also a great variety of scenery!
Image if pokemon snap had these graphics
Omg the conducter outfit is the cutest thing lol
You not only got the Densha de Go controller, but a *full conductor's outfit* . You absolute legend
Japanese railways are actually a lot like that. Many now have gates on the platform, so the driver needs to stop within centimetres of the correct position! Arriving within a few seconds of the advertised time is expected too. It's amazing.
Cartoon ladies winking at you incessantly and smashing into the end of the rail... it seems like it would be fun to ride a train in Japan.
The Densha De Go series is absolutely underrated to the ground and probably one of the best Japanese rail simulators out there.

It's funny cuz I'm here after Thab played Hey You Pikachu... And this is a much better game.
the fact that he doesn't comment on the conductor outfit the entire video is literally so funny
Japan actually has a size (and a climate) a lot like the east coast of the United States. Tokyo has a latitude more north than Dallas, TX.

Actually, pesos were the name of a form of Japanese imperial occupation currency...So we can work with this lore
The controller + the outfit. This is why you've grown to be my favorite creator.

I think I went on that one in Ogden, UT but I'm not sure if it was an operative one or one of the old ones 🤔
"the first thing I did was play the tutorial" completely ignores the drip
I'm impressed with the graphics in this game. One of the more realistic games I've seen on N64, where others often have a cartoony look.

Saw an interesting train crash video in Tokyo they put such emphasis on being on time some conductors can’t handle the pressure
"I'm not the one who made up this story ok"

Ah, these streams were the best! I still love the Sergei lore
You look like you're having so much fun with this one, I love the outfit and the controller. This one was really cute overall lol
a conductor overall i guess

it would be so funny if this game was sold including the conductor uniform
Great video! This series keeps getting better keep it up
Oh damn. Speaking of the speech thing, is hey you pikachu on your list LOL I remember I brought it and never touched it xD
When I first found this series I didn’t like your voice, now I find it calming. Keep up the good work guy.
You earned my 'Like' when you bought the special controller.
Since the game was originally in Japanese, I'm going to guess that any voice commands would also have to be in Japanese.
The production value is so good!
Ever since visiting Japan I have been hooked to this series. Thanks for the dedication!
The graphics are pretty great for n64
Thab has big Bob Ross/Mr Rodgers energy in most of these videos.. the train conductor outfit has brought his wholesomeness level to over 9000.
