  • Throughout the history of Africa, multiple women have held positions of leadership and power. Whether they were queens or chieftainesses, or leaders of movements, women have marked their way in the history and legacy of Africa.
Today we will be looking at the female-only Queenship, the Modjdji Rain Queens of South Africa, who rule the Balobedu Kingdom. We will be looking at the history, practices and modern developments of the Rain Queens of South Africa, from the Modjadji dynasty.
The Rain Queens are a very historical aspect of South African history.

I am a big supporter in the philosophy on historic knowledge and traditions. This is part of our African inheritance and ensure culture, character, morals, religion and emotional existence as human beings in our multi-cultural environment. I am a "mixed breed" Afrikaner but sees myself as universal visitor to the modern-day world who support and practice the traditions from all the ancestors before us. Thank you for this informative video. It was very educational. Keep it up.

I think the "Sotho, Tswana" reference needs to be double checked. It would make more sense to use the "Bapedi" references. Even geographically speaking the tribe moved in from the north hence the references to Zimbabwe and how the royal house are cousins with the Venda royals. I belong to the Rain Queen's tribe and Mathole Motshega shares a lot about our history.

Actually we are not even Sotho as per bloodline we are in fact kalanga/khalaka hence "re bakhalaka" , again we have a saying " rehlapa ka lephoto ka meetse re tshaba o paolowa" "those who bath with milk saying water is polluted", you go to Zimbabwe you find all kalanga people using this.. the kalanga group is one of the Bantu groups like Nguni n Sotho. Kalanga compromise of groups such as: Balobedu, Balemba,Bakalanga,Balozwi/Barotse,Batwamambo,Banambya,Balemba,Batembe,Bavhenda,Babirwa,Balembethu,Batswapong,Bashange n many more.. Kalanga group is very huge in particular n that is where the balobedu tribe derives from n not the Sotho although we might have adopted their languages with the causes being intermarriages n colonisation..

Balobedu are not Bapedi , They became regarded as Bapedi after the migration of Bapedi to seek refuge and the Swati after the war with Mzilikazi . Bapedi hav their own history. Bapedi are from Lekwebepe (between Vaal and Limpopo river) .
