Review: Kaweco Classic Sport Fountain Pen

  • Looking for a relatively inexpensive and portable fountain pen? The Kaweco Classic Sport is very compact when capped, but turns into a full-sized pen when posted. It accepts international short ink cartridges, Kaweco's proprietary converter (which is TINY), and can also be converted into an eye-dropper fill pen.
The pen reviewed: Kaweco Classic Sport, Bordeaux, Fine nib
Ink used in review: Diamine Oxblood
Paper used: Rhodia Dot Pad, 80gsm

Thanks for this video. I just got on in a subscription box. This being my first fountain pen I could not figure out why it wouldn't ink. I didn't realize it snaps into the bottom portion I just slid it in and figured something was wrong when I could hear the cartridge shaking around.

Too bad mine is not. Just got mine today from Kinokuniya, Klcc. Anyway, i tried to put some force on it, it does write. But after sometime, it will skip again. Then i have to shake the pen then the ink comes out again. Not sure its the same prob as baby bottom. Gonna send it to a pen retailer to fix the nib. I got myself the bordeux version.

My own Kaweco Sport Classic (burgundy too btw :D) had some startup problems at first too.
It turned out the nib section wasn't pushed down far enough in the pen, which let the nib dry out pretty quickly whilst writing.
Luckly I did not have any problem with the smoothness of the pen.

Great review, very informative and thorough. I have the Skyline Sport in medium and had to do some adjusting on my nib. Thankfully, I found tutorials on youtube to assist with that. I prefer bottle inks, as well, so it's an adjustment to having a cartridge fountain pen. I'm not brave enough to do the eyedropper conversion.

Great review, thank you! I have only just discovered your channel and loving it.
Comment on 6:23 : a short international cartridge holds about 0.75ml of ink. There is also a long version which is 1.45ml, but obviously that wouldn't fit in the Sport.
There is a new Kaweco Mini Piston Converter for the Sport but I have not tried it yet. I'm with you: as much as I love bottled ink I use cartridges in the Sport.

If you order a replacement nib unit as I did to get the 1.1 the grip nib and feed are supplied as a complete unit. Just unscrew from the barrel.
These are cheaper in the UK than in the US.

+Susan White fixing baby's bottom or doing a little nib smoothing is actually quite easy and there are loads of videos out there on how to do it. My thing is, I'm not interested in paying full price for a non-functional pen, or anything else. So I'll probably take a pass on this one too.

Kaweco changed their nib supplier a while back I believe and new pens come with improved nibs.
I have also noticed a huge difference between Diamine inks the Golden Honey has startup problems if the pen is left sitting with the cap off for a few minutes, however the Aqua Blue suffers no such issues in the same pen.
The Aqua Blue is also noticeably more free flowing when in use (both in the Kaweco and my backup Lamy pen.)

Pilot Petit1 follows the same functionalities (post the clip to get a decent size) as the Kaweco Sport, but is cheaper (~ $4) and consequently feels a bit flimsy.
But so far I have read, and used, its nibs are exceptionally good considering the price.

Not a squeeze converter sir a proper small twist converter. I use a Burgundy coloured one with gold clip and f nib with Kaweco brown cartridge ink. And I have a black one with a silver clip and a 1.1 nib.
I use a converter with Schaeffer Black ink.
Both pens wrote beautifully right out of the box.
    My favourite edc pen.
    Ideal for dress shirt pockets.

My new green classic sport DID seem to have hard-starts (definitely) and a bit of skipping (maybe).
Disappointing, when there are things like Pilot Kakuno actually being great. 25-ish may not be a lot, BUT when you add a clip and converter, that’s another $10-12. I think these “entry level” “it just works” “grab and go pocket pens” need to work better out of the gate.
It’s neat that hobbyists have space to dabble with nib mods and syringe filling of the body, but SMH Kaweco needs to “get it done” a little better. 20-35$ plush shipping is the opposite of cheap when “it doesn’t work”.
I’m just tying to get a few more nib sizes-I’m a super-small writer, so I bought a few tiny Sailor PGS and PGSMini-but I want to look beyond my preference to check out more ink properties.
Also, my Sport F nib is WAY broader than the Perkeo M nib I bought previously in this “check other broader nibs project. After I got over my disappointment, it was a well, they ARE different pens, after all, but are those two budget lines known to be so different? Are Kaweco nibs know to be so inconsistent in their sizing (i.e. order an M; get what you get! Sort a a “spin the wheel” experience.)?
