I think Patrick Seitz does a great job as Franky. A little fun fact about the English dub, During the process for selecting the English VAs, Oda was actually in charge of selecting who gets to voice each of the Straw Hats and a lot of other main characters based on how well he felt they fit the characters in English.Tho I often watch it dubbed cause it's easier to get into it when I can understand what's being said.
As someone who went from dub to sub I say give the voice actors a shot they do an amazing job and once you spend time with their voices they grow on you. I feel hearing them out of context doesn't do it justice; especially the Luffy help me part. Watching that part in english had me in tears for Nami and her struggles. I totally think you need to watch the full scene or even just watch up to that episode to get a better feel for the moment Because when I went from dub to sub I had the very same reaction as you guys did over the voices sounding weird or not right. Though after giving it some time and watching the sub more, I absolutely love both the dub and sub.
Bruh same I actually started with the dub a while back and yeah at first I was like "uhhhhh🤨🫥?" for dub luffy but I got used to it and saw the entire dub until Zou and had a similar reaction to the Japanese VAs when I had to switch but I got used to it too lol. Franky and Robin sub kinda did throw me off at first tbh. But I love both even when one version is better than the other. Honestly the dub VAs deserve more credit.
Luci Christian fucking killed it as Nami in “Luffy, help me” scene. Genuinely heart breaking. I think all of the voice actors for the Straw Hats are perfect, especially Robin and Ussop.
Luci Christian sounded like she screamed herself raw in that scene, like holy crapola, I could feel the devastation, grief and rage in her performance!
I think the clips that were chosen did a lot of these voices super dirty. Especially from early on in the show. Colleen’s Luffy is surprisingly good (she voiced Gohan in DBZ Kai) and only gets better throughout the series. Also Nami’s VA… that was not a good clip for her. Lol. I think if you were to watch full dubbed scenes you’d get a better picture. Also I prefer Franky’s dub voice to his sub voice. Idk it’s all personal preference at the end of the day
@@pithicusthen554 it was super chopped up and didn’t showcase the best part, imo, when she’s telling the village that it’s alright, and when she’s screaming at Luffy to leave. So yeah I think it was an unfortunate cut.
@@pithicusthen554 while i'm gonna be over-generous to speculate that the eng VA is still getting used to Nami's character since this is still the beginning arcs of OP. But yes, that IS a big fat FAIL of that scene. I can barely hear Nami's desperation from the eng dub, while in the sub, Nami is practically choking out the line "help me" between her crying.
I agree that most of the voices have much better examples, I honestly look back fondly on Sanji and Nami but I do think that they didn't do the best in some of the more iconic scenes both for the characters progression and in comparison to the Japanese voice actors performance. Totally agree that its a preference thing, I've seen my fair share of One Piece Dubbed but I will forever be a Sub enjoyer primarily. The best part of some of these is the nostalgia and the ability to relate to the actual words being said rather than their message. For example, there's the scene in skypea where Luffy is punching Enel with the Golden Rifle and says "Let it ring!". Its a pretty different scene and tone than the sub portrays but I will always look back on it as a pretty decent performance by the voice actor and an iconic/nostalgic moment for the show for me.
@@scotty2dadout Yep! I also think some things get lost in translation with dubs because there are some sayings/jokes that are 100% made for the Japanese population that doesn't have a great English equivalent. That being said, the One Piece localization team has always seemed to do a really good job, and they have fun with their translations and don't leave them super dry. Unfortunately the early stuff is just that--early. In both the dubbing scene and the art of English dubbing in general. I think it's all come a long way since those first few episodes aired. Nami's VA Luci Christian has been around forever. She's an awesome VA, but you can tell that 2007 was still fairly early in the dubbing community. It's so much easier to dub things now because Japanese studios gear themselves up to be able to broadcast their shows internationally now. Also the sub vs dub argument has always seemed asinine to me, because it is personal preference. I like watching dubbed because I like to multitask while I watch anime. If I'm drawing, I can't always read subtitles, so that's what works for me.
It may be because I’m used to it, but I like Luffy’s dub voice and I think the clips shown didn’t really showcase some of the better examples of it. Also, fun fact, the va also played young Gohan and Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist
I immediately connected to the dub voice cuz I watched hellish amounts of dbz and played nearly every dbz game I may even pick up the show someday I just gotta try looking past the goofy AF art style so I can get into that deep one piece lore pool
Patrick Seitz makes Franky sound like a pro wrestler which suits him perfectly. Franky is canonically American and he's just a wonderful character! I love this guy!
When I first watched the show, I found it kinda weird, but it grew on me eventually.. 😅 Very unpopular opinion, but I prefer it over the japanese one.. 😅😅😅
Its definitely better than the sub. Tbh, I dont even really like one piece all that much but I can acknowledge that it has some legends in the VA community. I think its superior to the sub
It is said that he did the final pick from a short list for the main cast, but there's no factual information around it anywhere. Where he did have a direct say was with OPLA, because he acts as Executive Producer, and his contract specifically stipulates that everything goes through him
Oda had to pick from a small list. These are not the top picks. Its whatever Funimation could offer back then. If One Piece started its dub today, the cast would be better because there's more options.
@@Joybuzzahzidk man the dub is pretty great as is. All I watch are dubs and I can’t really think of any VAs that could replace or match the energy of any of the straw hats tbh.

I definitely agree. I feel like the voice can feel odd when you 1st hear them especially when you are used to how they sound in another language but after time you get used to them and can like how the voice actors voice their lines. It was how I felt when going from the dub to sub. Felt the voice were weird and off. but after spending time with them it feels so right with the characters.
@@franklinreed7614 he sounds like ash ketchum (who’s a ten year old). Even if luffy has a goofy personality, he’s 20. Get that? 20. Not to mention the va just sounds so bad in serious scenes too. Especially when it comes to gears
after meeting Franky in dub and learning it was Patrick Seitz, I was instantly sold. it's too perfect. Usopp, too, has a lot of range, so this was a weird choice of dub sample, he does not usually sound so stone cold. also, this video not including Brook clips is criminal, he is such a delight in the dub.
Time skip Luffy is definitely better and you can tell he sounds older. Yes his voice is still very similar but the fact that she pulled of a great change like that is awesome 😎
I've watched the dub since episode 1 and always like the voices Also if you want a good showcase of Dub Luffy watch the fight against Rob Lucci, the VA's lungs must of shattered, that battle cry was amazing.
It's funny because Zoro is voiced by Chris Sabat, who also voices Vegeta/Piccolo in Dragon Ball and you can totally hear some of that in the dub lol Usopp is voiced by Sonny Strait who voices Krillin. And Sanji is voiced by Eric Vale who voices Future Trunks.
As someone who’s started watching one piece (finally nearing the 500 episode mark), I had to choose the dub just because I grew up on the DBZ dub and the same familiar voice actors are so nostalgic to me.
It’s interesting to see this perspective. Me personally I usually watch anime dubbed and same goes for One Piece. Really interesting to hear you didn’t think Sanji’s voice fit his character
Honestly it really felt like a "huh?" Comment to make. They do realize that one piece is wacky and goofy and luffy is a combination of those two traits right?
Yeah they took the early clips for the East Blue straw hats and most of them were one-off lines then they go and choose the best and most iconic line Robin had in dub, like of course they're going to like her the best 😂
YESSS! I don't know what they were talking about for Luffy and Zoro, they sound almost identical to the sub but I'll admit that Crocodile and Aokiji were a little on the weaker side
@@royalfun1031 what are the directors supposed to do when someone dies? Obviously that voice actor needs to be honored, but the show is still going and a new actor needs to be selected.

The dub voices grow on you. That being said, Luffy's VA was definitely more fitting for pre time skip as he wasn't as mature back then. Post time skip Luffy understands a little more of the dangers of the world. I think they definitely made a good attempt to grow Luffy through the English VA after the time skip but theres something that still feels like a naive teenager. Sonny Strait is goated as Usopp.
As a person that has watched both English Dub and Japanese Dub. I love both of the dubs, to me both are really iconic. Let’s be honest Stephanie Young’s Robin is beyond fantastic.
The voice itself is always killling it tbh, I don’t understand how people don’t get that Luffy is fundamentally a silly ass character, in a great way!!! ESPECIALLY after Gear 5
You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this!! Please please do a part 2 of this or if it’s possible try and find someone who watches dub and make them guess the sub but either way please continue this!!!
@@JackTheBus I'M SERIOUS the dub voice fits Franky more. Sub is good because it's Bon Clay and his voice actor fits that character type very well. But I've always pictured Franky sounding like one of those American "cool guys" if that makes any sense. When I watched the anime for the first time Frankie's voice was genuinely jarring to me.
i love frankys dub voice its literally exactly how i imagined him im pretty fond of it cus his dub is the first voice ive heard of him (i had subs on too for more accurate translation)
I’m sorry but y’all can’t say if the dub is good or not just based on a small clip of the voice. You didn’t even add crocodiles laugh which is the best part about his dub.
Robin is easily the best voiced Straw Hat with Brook. But I think the clips that were used for Luffy, didn't really show how much effort his voice actress (Colleen Clinkenbeard), puts into him. Anything with Luffy screaming his lungs out she nails better than anyone else. Jet Gatling is easily one of her best scenes with Luffy. That's always my number one scene to point at when I want one of her best performances. Also she kills it during Marineford. While I think Colleen can miss sometimes, it's honestly fairly rare. She loves him more than any other role she has played.
Personally, I really love the eng dubbed version.. It does have its issues, but so does the sub. In some ways dub is superior to sub and vice versa.. but both are equally good to me.. 😌 We need part 2 though, guys. There are so many iconic characters you need to listen to their dub version.. 🤩
Being someone who watched Dub first without any background on how the Japanese voices are, I actually think Luffys voice fits him pretty well. Saying it sounds too childish doesn't make sense because canonically he's only a teenager and has a very childish personality (ps. when the intense moments hit like in marineford he sounds very different and more serious), also if you look at Franky's character design, his voice actually matches pretty well. I think people only dog on it so much based on their attachment to the Original VAs and don't look at it objectively. If you look at it on its own its not bad at all.
Luffy is 19-20. Im pretty certain most people who have heard 20 year olds know that they don’t sound like ash ketchum. And yes he’s goofy, but that doesnt mean he has to sound like a cartoon show protagonist. And big scenes (especially gear 4) are a big fumble for me in dub.
exactly, dubbed versions are usually the most superior as the voice actors are matched to the characters, rather than whomever is just available as with subbed. Another aspect is that western voices tend to be deeper and easier to understand, whereas eastern voices tend to be higher pitch. So when it comes to epic moments and a character is being serious, whether being cold and calculated or shouting, the deeper voices portray those aspects more accurately than the higher pitches.
They say Luffy’s dub voice sounds too childish? Are they not aware that Luffy in the Japanese dub is voiced by a woman doing a pre-pubescent boy voice? Basically a child like voice? Did they not even watch the show subbed properly? I haven’t but even I’m aware of how Luffy sounds in both versions.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 luffy in japanese definitely does not sound like a pre-pubescent boy 😭plus in serious situations he actually sounds serious
Luffy’s english dub voice is actually really fitting for his age, and it develops as the show goes on. I started watching the sub version when I was 9 years old, and there weren’t that many episodes of One Piece out (like 50-70 episodes). I’m 31 years old now, and I’ve grown to like the dub more than the sub because I can watch every detail of the anime; instead of reading while watching, and only catching glimpses of it. Also, When you said that it’s not some kid’s cartoon and Luffy sounded too immature and “uncool”, I laughed so loud! Luffy is very childish, and I just think they did his voice perfectly in the dub. Fun fact: the voice actor who does Luffy’s English dubbed voice is a woman, and she also does kid Gohan’s voice in DBZ!
I appreciate the craft when it comes to dubbing and the funimation cast still keeps it up. I'm used to hearing them at this point but it fueled my OP obsession and I can equally watch in both dub and sub.
As someone who started watching One Piece dubbed back in 2011 (This was one of my first anime experiences outside of DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho which I think have overall pretty decent dubs) I think you can really tell who has more experience being an anime voice actor. Usopp and Zoro in particular stand out to me since they both voice characters in DBZ, Zoro is Vegeta/Piccolo and Ussopp is Krillin. To some extent I think Sanji and Nami will grow on you as well. That being said, I think your guys' point about it sounding like a Saturday morning cartoon voice rather than something more serious really holds true in the way a lot of western voice actors portray anime character. Theres this level of insincerity that I think most people get in the form of cringe when watching anime for that reason. Side note, something that I really like is that the English voice actor for both Krillin in DBZ and Usopp in One Piece are the same person and the Japanese voice actors for both Krillin and Luffy are the same person. Completely unrelated I'm sure but being someone who started out as a kid watching DBZ it just makes One Piece that much more connected to my nostalgia for anime.
As much as I can appreciate the sub for being iconic, I love the One Piece dub. I think it absolutely nails One Piece's entire tonal range (dramatic, laid-back, completely silly, etc...) and aside from a couple minor characters, I think the casting and direction over the years has been on-point. It's also such a rarity to have a dub cast work on a show this long and remain consistent, and I just think that's pretty special. And just as there are plenty of sub moments that are ingrained in my brain, there are a bunch of moments from the dub that outshine the original for me. Luffy's Jet Gatling scene during Enies Lobby still absolutely gets my jaw on the floor (as do a bunch of Colleen's big screams in general but that's the one if I have to pick just one).
Naah the dub like heisu said, It seems as if it were a cartoon, Luffy's voice defends me but it still irritates me HAHAH, and it may be because it's his language, but my native language is Spanish and I can't stand Spanish voices either, the Japanese ones are stronger
Luffy’s dub voice really suits his character and gets better over time imo, that audio clip you used of him was trash though, definitely not the best example😂
It doesnt suit his character at all. He sounds goofy as hell when he’s serious, and when hes funny it KIND OF fits. Kind of. He sounds like ash ketchum (who is 11 years old).
@@duckwithabs4537 oh i thought oda's vision was to make a goofy main character hence the funny rubber abilitys and goofball personality. guess i was wrong
as a dub watcher I’m so glad Colleen was casted as luffy if you see her other works that woman has RANGEEEE .. I think she makes a perfect luffy. she encapsulated luffy’s goofy side in her voice. she’s on top for me.
Luffy’s dub is amazing and here is why. Pre timeskip he was all goofy cause he never lost, but as the challenges get harder his voice develops and gets deeper. After Ace’s death, it becomes more noticeable abd by wano his voice is good.
I think for anyone who's been watching the subs since the beginning any dub is going to sound weird, especially just picking a random scene out of context. One Piece is a long-ass show, so it's pretty much impossible to not have the voices of the major characters drilled into your mind. It's kind of like how a lot of western Dragon Ball fans heard the Funimation voices for years so the original voiceover is just going to hit different. Like, Sabat's Vegeta voice will always be tied to the character in my mind because it's just way too distinct.
@@kenzoog8349 It's really not though... If anything the sub voice is irritating, he legit sounds like a rat on helium in the sub, the dub voice for Luffy is more masculine than the sub will ever be.

I totally think you need to watch the full scene or even just watch up to that episode to get a better feel for the moment
Because when I went from dub to sub I had the very same reaction as you guys did over the voices sounding weird or not right.
I really wished they had heard Mike McFarland as Buggy’s English dub voice, it would’ve been interesting to see their reactions
Plus, he's voice sounded like familiar to Mark Hamill voice as joker from dc
@@Rl22_04I had to make sure it wasn't him when I first heard it I was like WTF 😂
I’m still waiting for a part. 2 to this video
I’m literally the only one who watches one piece dubbed
i wtach it dubbed
you are not alone 💪🏽
I think the clips that were chosen did a lot of these voices super dirty. Especially from early on in the show. Colleen’s Luffy is surprisingly good (she voiced Gohan in DBZ Kai) and only gets better throughout the series. Also Nami’s VA… that was not a good clip for her. Lol. I think if you were to watch full dubbed scenes you’d get a better picture.
Also I prefer Franky’s dub voice to his sub voice. Idk it’s all personal preference at the end of the day
That was one of Nami’s most iconic scenes lmao. If showing that “did her dirty” then that’s on the voice actor and she did a bad job.
I can barely hear Nami's desperation from the eng dub,
while in the sub, Nami is practically choking out the line "help me" between her crying.
Same at the start of one piece i hated the voice but than i started tolerating it

I've heard that Oda actually helped select the English VAs so that he could help guide them on who would be best suited for each strawhat.

Im fine with franky’s va though
exactly, dubbed versions are usually the most superior as the voice actors are matched to the characters, rather than whomever is just available as with subbed.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 luffy in japanese definitely does not sound like a pre-pubescent boy 😭plus in serious situations he actually sounds serious
if u start with dub it just sounds better than sub, I’m guessing that’s the same the other way around?
No, i started with sub and its much better
I feel like his voice actress is pretty prolific. I hear it everywhere. Also how did they not notice zoro os voiced by Vegeta?
If memory serves, funimation ran the English voices by team in Japan and listened to their feedback, such as make Luffy's voice more raspy.
Zoro being spelt Zorro made get stage 4078 brain rot cancer in my left shin 6:45
Being shocked at Franky having the missy dude bro voices ever is wild
Pftt... Nope!
Naah the dub like heisu said, It seems as if it were a cartoon, Luffy's voice defends me but it still irritates me HAHAH, and it may be because it's his language, but my native language is Spanish and I can't stand Spanish voices either, the Japanese ones are stronger
