She accompanied her husband Diego Rivera who was painting in the United States and would, at the end of the year, be the subject of a retrospecive at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The banderole carried by the bird above the artist states: Here you see us, me, Frieda Kahlo, with my beloved husband Diego Rivera, I painted these portraits in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California, for our friend Mr. Albert Bender, and it was the month of April of the year 1931. Note: Kahlo changed her German name, Frieda, to Frida. Created by Beth Harris and Steven Zucker.

Diego was a large man, which makes Frida smaller than she was in real life. They must have been truly in love because they married twice. I love their work and enjoyed your video. Thank you.

I assume the size comparison is also allegorical in regards to how she was often treated as “Diego Rivera’s wife” instead of an artist in her own right. It’s awesome how she has a cult following now, but at the time he definitely was treated as a god as compared to her.

I recently had the opportunity to view Rivera’s murals in the National Palace. Absolutely knocked me out of my socks. The guide also explained what an influence Frieda was in terms of composition and subjects.

This painting and the relation between Frieda and Diego reminds me strongly of the relation between Robert and Elizabeth Browning--two Victorian literary giants. In the Browning's case, it is Elizabeth who writes love sonnets for her husband, "Sonnets from the Portuguese." Here, Frieda demonstrates her affection for Diego in a similar fashion. I've never studied the work of Frieda Kahlo. I'll have to look more deeply into her creations.

I love the real photo of them together - her demure yet sultry look at the camera, his broad smile.
Realism isn't the ultimate goal, but look at the microscopic feet on her compared to him! How'd she figure her feet should be 1/15 the size of his? 😂
Their hands are interesting to me too. She might be letting go, but it feels to me like she was just making contact with his and she's about to complete the hand-hold. Either way, I like the implied movement.
