Love to see someone who does very modern art with stencils etc but still appreciates traditional media and respects the masters and what we can learn from them.
Procrastinating and focusing on another area that “needs less attention” is one of the most relatable things ever. Also, new sub here! I’ve been binge watching your videos while also working. Love your energy and your eagerness to constantly learn is so inspiring. ✨🌻
Fantastic tutorial, some will possibly give up on painting after this as Slew makes the work look so very easy! He is a natural and great tutor and explains well what he is doing, don't give up Folks, stick with it and watch this guy!
14:40 (learning) - This was my major flaw for myself as an artist. I only ever cared for the outcome, even at this moment, the naive part of me is still saying "your painting is not as good as the one you're copying from" but you've hit the nail of the head. It's a learning process, building better foundations a deeper understanding of the fundamentals. Took me a long time to appreciate the state of mind one needs to engage in learning for the sake of learning.
Agree - it’s a good way to learn, improve one’s skills, by copying the masters, as a practice. I copy my favorite artists and always make a note (give credit) to the artist at the bottom.
Learning is super addictive if you’re having fun. I’m always having fun when painting as long as I’m able to withdraw myself from the idea of “perfection”. It’s such a mood killer. Anyways, love your videos as always.
omg, im still struggling with the "perfection" thing 😞 I know my work looks its best when im loose but damn it's kinda hard to not freak out if it dosnt look exactly how I want it. i got some more learning to do
Okay Slew might be one of my favorite painters after this video, he talks about exactly what I struggle with when I'm painting when other artists on youtube just make it look like they're gods and can just do anything without any problems or anything else, slowing them down, while Slew just showed exactly what it's like to paint
Normally would being that arrogant and so contenious of young people now would address you as Young man, but instead I feel you deserve a 'Sir', having retired at the age of 65, three years ago, grumpy, extremely critical and took up oil painting could not believe the number of 'so called Art tutors' on here who dare to call them artists. I also was a teacher trainer and can truly say you are a true artist, you can teach, have character, intellect, humour and talent and I 'hate' you LOL. Have been watching Richard Robinson (New Zealand) 'My Paintclub' (very good artist and tutor) and he very much promotes John Sargent and is why I came across your RUclips, I will certainly subscribe and I am sure I will learn a lot from you.
Could you further explain what you mean? Forced quality / obsessed quality, is that a course, technique, what is it? Google doesn‘t seem to know so I’m curious. :D Or maybe I just misunderstood your sentence completely, sorry I‘m not a native speaker.
Hell yeah! In a weird way, I felt proud of you here man. Seeing your struggles, particularly with eyes. We all have stuff we struggle with or are scared of when making a painting or drawing, and to see you nail this made me smile!
Sargent did not use a limited palette. Also, a very common trait of the Zorn palette is a yellow hue to the face/skin tones. I really dig ur videos & u should b proud of this master copy, it looks great! Thank u for the content & commitment to art & painting, I really enjoy ur channel. ✌🏻Stay healthy!
The descriptions you give of your experience and evolution are simply precious. It takes someone that has strived and failed a thousand times to appreciate this expository of expression. I'm a big Alphonso Dunn fan. Your painting work is a pleasure to follow. The color bases are so important and so vital. They really help. Skintones,.. Dang, that is the kicker! Thankyou
wow great talent !! i am impressed thank you, when i was visiting GHANA, AFRICA,i saw this man that was a painter with an unreal talent gave me same feeling
I received my May’s scrawlrbox a few days ago, it had some charcoals and pastel pencils in it, I’ve always hated those media but I’ve been super inspired lately by you to just go for it. Practice my art and trying to shed that fear of not making a masterpiece every time but simply just create stuff, which has resulted in not only do I do more art than before, but also my level for sure improves. It has also led me to not fearing my new art supplies and just jump straight into it. I love doing portraits and here I sit with a quite decent portrait in a media i am not used to (nor skilled In) and THAT makes me feel proud, so a thousand times thank you for ALWAYS inspiring and helping me push my artistic skill. So cool! 🙌🏻💙
Great job and really well done! I would avoid Patreon like the plague. Better to just send people the address you want the money to go to and problem done. No need to rely on censorship machines to do things for you because the more you use them the less chance you have of using one the next time you use it. Its a law of the market.
Omgosh!! I LOVE your videos! Loving that you show every step! Seriously so love your channel. Been watching for years but I never comment... had to! This is so good!
Good job, Slew, you captured the likeness of JSS, his very self confident look. Enjoyed your working process - Zorn palette - yeah! Good tip - “don’t be afraid to use too much paint”.
I can't tell you how long it has been since I have enjoyed a video so much. I am actually due to do an artists copy/response for my Alevel work this week. And I have been procrastinating it due to feeling scared and knowing how 'bad' I am in comparison. But this got me so excited for it! Thank you!
Hey, man! A little feedback to let you know that you have an energy that connects with another energy that loves learning about and creating art! Keep doing what you do and I'm gonna keep an eye out for more new content and what else is in your existing library of videos! Thanks and keep it up!
Sick love how fast and no messing about 💥 inspired me as my current piece.. I have lost momentum and getting lazy with my process blah. Hoping to lay some quicker strokes now down tmw now this gave me a light needed kicking the arse 🙏🙏
You did a wonderful piece of solid art, Slew! You've been practicing eyes, haven't you? Five quick eye sketches a day, maybe five minutes each, for 30 days and when finished with the project youll be able to nail them every single time. Bravissimo!
Nice attempt. But remember this:: the Zorn palette is way too limited for JSS style paintings. He was a bit of a madman with his palette and heavily loading his brushes with thick paint that he exhaustively mixed. He had cad yellow, cad red,, cad orange, Alizarin crimson, viridian, cobalt blue, burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre, ivory black, etc on his palette at any given time. He was hyper focused on getting the shape of the sitter’s skull correct and lingering in middle tones, gradually going from to darks to lights. Details of the face were completely ignored until the end. You’ll note that In his backgrounds he tended to go lighter on the shadow side of the figures and darker on the light side to bring the face forward.
Missing your videos - hope you’re healing well! Rewatch omg this reminds me of my studies of Caravaggio’s work at the beginning of the year...in marker! They were a lot of fun. Should schedule some time to do another study before school begins again.
I used the the Zorn pallet for a self portrait the other day because of you using it. I think it turned out pretty well. Definitely will be using it more in the future . Thanks 👍🏻
Hi Slew, always enjoy your videos and admire your talent. I always use limited or Ziorn palette even for watercolour. I cannot use oil as it affects my eyes but think acrylic is almost as good. Your work is super and thank you for sharing.
Ive checked it before, and Im not sure about the iris as that changes, but the pupil on the left is actually a bit lighter as more light catches the left eye (I checked it digitally while doing a digital study of this a few weeks ago)
Ha ha we all say that's it .But it's when you wake up at two o clock in the morning. You have just got to take that one last look at that canvas lol .you have amazing talent .just subscribed to your site .regards
This is a great beginner tutorial. It’s important to note that, although this has likeness to the original, the technique And overall outcome are far from the original. Sargent, like many of the great masters, would build his painting up in layers of coloured glazes. These glazes give his work the depth and form that can’t be achieved with anywhere near the same quality with this wet on wet, surface level technique. After seeing some of Sargent’s work first hand, his glaze most likely used a damar based varnish. It would have had one of the popular painting oils and turpentine. Still a great video. Just wanted give people some extras.
Take a shot every time he refers to the paint as delicious. Kidding, love your work.
i dont think theres a more universal feeling for artists than the urge to eat art supplies so (or maybe the artists i talk to are just unhinged)
😂 alcohol poisoning. I love when he says that
I'm 3 min in and I would be drunk alrwady lol
If I play this game then I will be dead by the end of some video's hahaha
Take a shot everytime hes amped😂
Great pacing on this vid. Man I wanna try oil paint now
Please do, I'd be so interested in seeing how oil would inspire you! Also thanks for keeping me entertained, you're friggin awesome!
10hundo your the man brother!

Haha yes so much procrastination within my oil painting process. But that’s have the fun. Making and solving the puzzle of the paint and your focus!
"Needs less attention"
Do you mean reading the comments Before watching the video is bad thing!! 😂
Fantastic tutorial, some will possibly give up on painting after this as Slew makes the work look so very easy!

this comment!! couldn't agree more.
Your energy and love for the art of making art is.... delicious!

If you haven't used models, the forced quality versus the obsessed quality is a glorious experience. Love your work.

Your eyes are getting better. Such a dope end product. ugh! it's too gooooood

not really he did many of his paintings according to her clients only using the zorn and no medium.
Yea! Great job, slew

Really great vid, this has helped me in experimenting with oil painting in my art class good job.
That was amazing... Thank you ❤️🙏
Great painting & video from Finland.
I love this. In my book, you work very fast, I envy that.
Great job!
awesome. really good. i never put any black in portrait work. it can muddy the work, but you use it smartly.
Slew is the man!
Love the editing in this video Slew dog is on a rollll
Well done !

there is something like magic in those master paintings which we cannot paint.
Super cool! Keep it up, man!
It came out looking GREAT Slew. I'd love to try oil painting. Seems like a nice slow meditative process. ♥
when you procrastinated the eyes i could relate my guy
For me it is whenever hands are involved, i try to do everything but the hands lol
Yes hands and eyes are trouble for me usually. Fun! But trouble.
Another amazing one slew
update, I saw color for the first time on my birthday yesterday (June 15) and your art is even more amazing!!!!
