I am a big fan of Yamaha guitars, and these new FS Red Label acoustics look and sound great. My experience with Yamaha guitars is that they are workhorses. They are well-designed, solidly-constructed, and if you take good care of them, they will last forever. I own a 1979 Yamaha FG-365S - my first "good" guitar - and a 1974 Martin D-35. While the Martin is in a different league for tone, it has been far more finnicky and in need of more repairs and TLC over the years. The Yamaha FG is my everyday guitar, the one that I keep going back to. I also used to own a 1960s-era Yamaha FS-series that I gave away to a music student. It was wonderfully playable and it had a warm, rich tone, much more than one would expect from a "budget" guitar. I miss that FS. Perhaps for my next birthday, someone will gift me with one of those new FS Red Label models. 🙂
Just got mine after a six month wait and it is a thing of beauty. Amazing quality for the money and plays like a dream right out of the case. I'd put it up against my Martin any day...and I love that Martin.
Great endorsement. I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on this bad boy. I've been dreaming about buying a parlour style guitar for about 5 yrs now and I finally have a little doh saved for one. I'm also a fan of quality instruments like Martin and Taylor as well. This sounds like an affordable substitute for a higher end instrument. Not that it's cheap by any measure but prices for quality tone woods is outrageous right now.

I have a lot of faith in both Yamaha guitars and Japanese products in general actually. But definitely have a soft spot for Yamaha acoustic guitars especially because it was my Dad's main guitar for over 40 yrs. That bad boy was something else when he'd hit a nice fat g-run on it. I have an FS800T which is tinted top as well as a FSX5. The FS800 is really good for such an inexpensive laminate made guitar and it seems to be a similar design to the high end FSX5. It has a similar feel. The wood on the FS800 is clearly lower quality but still sounds good. It is also mass produced so the quality of construction does not come close to the FSX5. The latter is hand crafted and has excellent construction. The attention to quality is great. The price is 8 to 10 times the FS800.
Thank you for the review Jonathan , in your professional opinion would you choose this guitar or something like a martin 000-15 ? I'm really torn between the two and a few others right at this price point , and the Yamaha seems to have a few extra amazing appointments , thanks if you're reading this ❤️.
Hi Jonathan, im about to take a plunge between a Maton EBW808 and this FSX5. However, im really torn between either. I know its not an apple-apple comparison but im at my witts end trying to decide which to purchase. If you were in this situation, wwyd?
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thats why Im still playing my OLD Takamine TNV340, its the only gear I would never consider selling. Would be nice to get another master luthier made Tak though, they really do such a great job making guitars. If you havent tried one with the Cool Tube preamp and Triax soundhole blended with the palethetic under saddle pickup you should. Its the best plugged in sound you will ever hear. No external processing needed 🙂
Great video as always 🙃 This guitar really looks like bang for the buck. I'll definitely add it to my wish list and consider it in the future when I am looking to upgrade my guitar
Jon, you put together some amazing reviews and I very much appreciate them! I have a couple questions: what microphone are you recording the guitar with? Also, for around $1500, what other concert style guitars would you consider? Thanks very much! ✌
Thank you Connor!! I’m actually using a really affordable mic from Thomann. The T bone SCT800. For USD1500, you might want to check out some of the Mexican made Martins.. they are really good ✌️❤️
Would you recommend this guitar or going for the FS5 without the pick-up system and purchasing a separate pickup like the journeytek ep001k? Thank you for your great review!
@@JonIsJustTooLoud thank you for your quick response! I’m really interested in purchasing this model. What do you think of the inbuilt mic/pickup system? Is it a big upgrade over a passive transducer pickup? Also is there any other similar OM/000 shape guitars around this price range you can recommend? Thanks again!
Hi Jonathan. Great review. I hv a Martin D35e with an onboard aura plus system. Do u think I need a preamp such as what u indicate in the vid? Or the aura plus itself is a preamp? Sorry but i am new in the acoustic guitar world, been only playing electrics. Cheers!
You are new in the acoustic world and you own a D35?? Wow you've gone straight to the top shelf, wonderful guitar and excellent preamp... You can go straight into any desk or PA with that set up and get a great live sound!
At first I didn't know he had pip going. I was watching the big screen and thought to myself how's he doing that! The option where the guitar plays it's self. Lol
Love your playing:) have you tried the FG3? Just got one og the last ones here in europe and im shocked how good it is for the money. Incredible responsive, and just fun to play. Your bottleneck playing is fantastic btw.
I agree 100% Sigurd! Sorry I know your question was not addressed to me but I bought here in Australia April / May 2023 the Yamaha FG3. Amazing sound and a dream to play! During search for the guitar I tried the latest Yamahas Red Labels guitars also like the FGX5… FGX3 etc and went back to the shop where I played the FG3 ( also Red label but made in China) and believe or not it sounded better than the one the others I played made in Japan. Not sure if this will be the same with all FG3 models or my it happen to be an exceptional one!Even though it doesn’t have a pickup it sounded soooo good that I had to buy it!
@@HI2LIFE Hey! Congratulations! What can I say.. after owning this guitar a couple of years I like it even more! I have Put Martin retro strings on it, sounds great after breaking them in. It intonates perfect, sounds really full and classic.. the only thing I miss is a good pickup for it. Have used it with an LR Baggs m1, ok, but not great..
So the Yamaha sounds incredible. As I said in another comment, you’re playing is stellar! Beautiful guitar and I’m sure we’ll built, however, the plastic knobs on the guitar body are an eyesore. It’s a shame to ruin its beauty with plastic knobs.

Great review. I want one! Thanks!🌞😎✌️
Go for it✌️❤️
Your guitar sounds very good. Beautiful piece. What strings do you use ? What gage ? 12-53 ? Thank you for your vidéo.
Yes it is.. please check description for more info
Thank you for the review Jonathan , in your professional opinion would you choose this guitar or something like a martin 000-15 ? I'm really torn between the two and a few others right at this price point , and the Yamaha seems to have a few extra amazing appointments , thanks if you're reading this ❤️.
For me..I would go for this✌♥
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I've been trying to research a ton around the $1500 mark and this guitar is just amazing, idk what else could beat it
@@JonIsJustTooLoud thank you so much for the reply ❤️
Just to ask, for the money or a little more what would be your pick for the best acoustic guitar? Would I be this yamaha?
This is pretty good✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud any better ones you have in mind that you've played?
@@chocolatechip9829 it depends on your needs.. for recording, I would prefer the Martins D35, D18 or D28
Hi Jonathan, im about to take a plunge between a Maton EBW808 and this FSX5. However, im really torn between either. I know its not an apple-apple comparison but im at my witts end trying to decide which to purchase. If you were in this situation, wwyd?
I would try to find these guitars to play with..✌💙
What's the name of the first tune you did? Very nice.....Actually both please.
johnboy3100 all are original tunes done for this demo✌️❤️
Jonathan , Id love to hear your comments on a Takamine pro 7......Thanks
ok...when I get my hands on one ✌🤓
I love Takamine master luthier made guitars, its a real shame the big three american companies lobbied to outlaw them from import in the us
Well that’s the way the worm turns✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thats why Im still playing my OLD Takamine TNV340, its the only gear I would never consider selling. Would be nice to get another master luthier made Tak though, they really do such a great job making guitars. If you havent tried one with the Cool Tube preamp and Triax soundhole blended with the palethetic under saddle pickup you should. Its the best plugged in sound you will ever hear. No external processing needed 🙂
Great video as always 🙃
This guitar really looks like bang for the buck. I'll definitely add it to my wish list and consider it in the future when I am looking to upgrade my guitar
Thank you ✌️❤️
Jon, you put together some amazing reviews and I very much appreciate them! I have a couple questions: what microphone are you recording the guitar with? Also, for around $1500, what other concert style guitars would you consider? Thanks very much! ✌
Thank you Connor!! I’m actually using a really affordable mic from Thomann. The T bone SCT800. For USD1500, you might want to check out some of the Mexican made Martins.. they are really good ✌️❤️
Bajutifull. Sounds alittle like Dan Fogelbergs "Longer".
Thanks ❤️
Jon just lovely. Hoping Sweetwater gets the red labels back in stock. Definitely will be getting one. What strings are you using?
these are 12s from Yamaha...I use 13s for my D35 and 12s for the rest✌♥
Hi! How is the string spacing on this model? I have an L series with 1 3/4 nut but the spacing feels cramped. Hope this is better.
It's good
Hi Jonathan, how does the fs5 compare to an Eastman e6om? Thank you
I dont know...never tried an Eastman yet✌♥
Would you recommend this guitar or going for the FS5 without the pick-up system and purchasing a separate pickup like the journeytek ep001k? Thank you for your great review!
This
@@JonIsJustTooLoud thank you for your quick response! I’m really interested in purchasing this model. What do you think of the inbuilt mic/pickup system? Is it a big upgrade over a passive transducer pickup? Also is there any other similar OM/000 shape guitars around this price range you can recommend? Thanks again!
Does it have more bass than a Taylor 414?
Wouldn’t know.. never played on a 414✌️❤️
Does this have the same rolled edge on the fretboard/neck that the AC3R has?
Cassandra L hi.. I can’t honestly remember.. this was like awhile back✌️❤️
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thank you. :)
Hi Jonathan. Great review. I hv a Martin D35e with an onboard aura plus system. Do u think I need a preamp such as what u indicate in the vid? Or the aura plus itself is a preamp? Sorry but i am new in the acoustic guitar world, been only playing electrics. Cheers!
You should..you can shape the sound further✌❤
You are new in the acoustic world and you own a D35?? Wow you've gone straight to the top shelf, wonderful guitar and excellent preamp... You can go straight into any desk or PA with that set up and get a great live sound!
Love red labels!!
Im trying to decide between this, and the martin d12E, which would you suggest if i may ask?
I dont know...Have not tried out the D12e yet
Hi Jon, would you suggest this guitar over the Martin 000-15m?
it's a different guitar..it will depend on your own choice ✌♥
At first I didn't know he had pip going. I was watching the big screen and thought to myself how's he doing that! The option where the guitar plays it's self. Lol
lol!!
In terms of sound, which guitar do you prefer, Takamine ef450 or this Yamaha guitar?
The Takamine!✌😀
Sir, you can buy two Yamaha FSX5 and don't think the Takamine sounds twice as good.
Hi Jon, I’m here for the music. Absolutely love it. What’s the name of the first song? Is it on Spotify?
It’s called White River.. and no it’s not on Spotify
@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thank you. Wish your music is on Spofity.
Love your playing:) have you tried the FG3? Just got one og the last ones here in europe and im shocked how good it is for the money. Incredible responsive, and just fun to play. Your bottleneck playing is fantastic btw.
Thank you Sigurd.. and no i have not✌️❤️
I agree 100% Sigurd!
✌️❤️
You'll be the 1st guy I see play a case
lol!!! if only i know how to install tuners on the case!!
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I'm sure you'll think of something my friend..🙏😍🙏😍🥰👍👍👍
Sir.. Can u suggest me.. Which one should I buy....
This one or Yamaha a5m are??
If you need a cutaway, get the A5m. I prefer the FSX5 ✌️❤️
Thank you so much sir...
You did a great help 🙏
